PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Aleksander Kazimierz (ranked 1626 p4p, 79 weight class) and Nick Mullen (ranked 1682 p4p, 82 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Aleksander Kazimierz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nick Mullen!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Sam Margolis and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mullen misses with a body kick.
Mullen lands a high kick!
Mullen leaves Kazimierz with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Mullen tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Kazimierz clinches up with Mullen and pushes him back against the cage.
Mullen is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Mullen pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Mullen is looking to chop away at Kazimierz's legs.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kazimierz.
Mullen uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Kazimierz has time to react.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kazimierz scores with a takedown into Mullen's guard.

Kazimierz is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Kazimierz throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mullen works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Mullen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kazimierz. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kazimierz is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Kazimierz has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Mullen is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kazimierz is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at London MMA Club that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mullen wants to stand but Kazimierz is controlling the position.
Kazimierz postures up in Mullen's guard and throws a big left but Mullen blocks it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
No luck for Kazimierz with that takedown attempt.
Mullen has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Kazimierz is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Kazimierz scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Kazimierz throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Mullen tries to kick Kazimierz off but Kazimierz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Kazimierz has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Kazimierz goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Mullen is on top in guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Mullen wants to stand but Kazimierz has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mullen wants to control from the top but Kazimierz keeps moving.
Kazimierz wants to get back to his feet but Mullen is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Aleksander Kazimierz will probably get the nod.

Mullen is looking to slow Kazimierz down with leg kicks.

so Kazimierz counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

and Kazimierz decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mullen's guard.
Mullen is wriggling around but Kazimierz manages to pass to half guard.

Kazimierz lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kazimierz throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Mullen because Kazimierz loaded up on that one.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mullen is in a horrible position here. Kazimierz smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Kazimierz tries to control but Mullen wriggling away.
Kazimierz thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Kazimierz with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Poor strikes thrown by Kazimierz there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Mullen is working to get back to half guard.
Kazimierz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Kazimierz moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Mullen has worked his arm free - good work by Mullen!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Kazimierz is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Kazimierz shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mullen defends it nicely.
Kazimierz tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mullen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kazimierz somewhat.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aleksander Kazimierz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mullen pulls out of a head kick attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Kazimierz crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Mullen - the referee stops the clock and Kazimierz gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Mullen. Kazimierz manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Kazimierz dives in for a single leg takedown but Mullen sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Mullen throws an overhand right that lands on Kazimierz's shoulder, as Kazimierz tries to avoid the shot.
Mullen throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Mullen misses with a head kick.
Aleksander Kazimierz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Mullen connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Mullen lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Kazimierz's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Mullen connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Kazimierz scrambles back to his feet.

Kazimierz looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Mullen is trying to stand.
Still in half guard, Kazimierz seems content to control.
Kazimierz throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Mullen pushes Kazimierz off looking to stand but Kazimierz dives back in and keeps control.
Well, if Kazimierz is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Kazimierz is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Kazimierz stops Mullen from getting back to his feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nick Mullen is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Kazimierz decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nick Mullen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nick Mullen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kazimierz has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
