Rail's coach down at St Petersburg MMA Gym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Rail's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Rail tries a head kick but it misses.
Rail changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Rail scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Rail tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target. Rail misses with an uppercut. Tessmacher saw that one coming. Tessmacher looks to land a left hand but Rail moved out of range nicely. Rail feints a counter leg kick. Tessmacher shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Tessmacher fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Rail tries to bum rush Tessmacher with a series of wild strikes but Tessmacher uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Tessmacher shoots in for a takedown but Rail shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Tessmacher looks to land a left hand but Rail moved out of range nicely. Tessmacher moves in looking to clinch but Rail pushes him off. Rail looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. A looping hook to the body misses from Rail. Tessmacher does a little dance to reset his feet. Rail missing with a left hand there. Tessmacher was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Tessmacher misses with the combination.

A big right from Rail misses. #KD2# Tessmacher ducks straight into an uppercut from Rail and tumbles to the canvas! It’s a flash knockdown though - Tessmacher manages to regain guard straight away.

The fight stays on the outside here - Somer looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Rail moves out of range as Somer strikes. A little jabbing left from Rail on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Somer misses with a straight left. Somer throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

#R1##TD# Rail gets caught napping as Kovac dives in and scores a takedown. Rail manages to retain guard. Rail really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kovac. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Kovac sitting in guard here, content to control. Rail is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kovac is controlling him. Rail is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Rail is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Rail takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
The referee asks Kovac politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Kovac prefers to stall for the moment though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.#SU# Kovac has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Rail moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. #T2##TD# Kovac shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Rail manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Kovac controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Rail is wriggling around but Kovac manages to pass to half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Kovac performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Kovac working over Rail with some ground and pound. Rail looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.#SU# Kovac decides to stand and escape the position. Rail with a nice calf kick. Rail cracks Kovac with an open hand slap. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kovac shoots for a takedown but Rail saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Prezes Rail is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.#CL# Kovac clinches. #T3##TD# Kovac has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Rail uses from the top position. Rail stopping the sweep attempt from Kovac. Rail wants to stand but Kovac has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Kovac manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rail manages to get himself to full guard.

Rail fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kovac manages to avoid it.#TD# Kovac looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Rail looks winded!#SU# Kovac decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. #TD# Kovac closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rail's guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Kovac is pushing down on Rail's leg trying to pass to half guard. Rail is fighting to maintain full guard but Kovac has managed to sneak the leg through. Kovac takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Kovac looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rail with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kovac is controlling the pace.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Stejpan Kovac dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.#R2# Kovac tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Rail defends well and Kovac ends up having to push Rail into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. It seemed like Rail was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Rail wants to break the clinch but can't.

Stejpan Kovac overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Kovac is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. Rail looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! #TD# Kovac closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Rail to the mat! Rail manages to get full guard. #T2# Kovac postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Kovac goes for a takedown in the clinch but Rail prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Stejpan Kovac. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kovac's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.#TD# Kovac manages to pull guard.
Kovac has a closed guard, preventing Rail from standing up. #ES# Kovac has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Rail is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.#T3# A frustrated look appears on Rail's face as he tries to break the clinch. Kovac misses with a knee strike.

Kovac looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rail is one step ahead there. #SUB# Rail is sitting in close to Kovac's body. Kovac has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Rail is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Rail is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Kovac.
