NGF 31, Season 4 Kick Off Review

UNDER CARD

Super Heavyweight Fight

#13 Vatslav Borisov (4-1, 1-0 NGF) v #14 Giant John (4-3, 1-3 NGF)

This was a pretty entertaining fight between these two.  John did his best to keep it standing, and like I thought, he was winning the standup game.  In the end, Borisov’s wrestling was too much for John, as Vatslav took John down 7 times and was able to work over the big man with 19 ground strikes and he also attempted 5 submissions.  The ground attack is what the judges notices as Borisov wins this one 29-28 by all three judges.

Heavyweight Fight

#21 Dwayne Johnson (3-1, 1-1 NGF) v #19 Kullervo Pelli (6-4, 3-2 NGF)

HOLY TOLEDO!  Did you blink?  If you did you may have just missed possibly the KO of the year!  Dwayne Johnson, who was on a 3 fight win streak, charged out, hands low and Kullervo Pelli launched a 2 strike combo that knocked Johnson out cold.  Pelli will move up the ranks and his KOTN will be also be up for KOTY.

Heavyweight Figh

#18 Armand Battailen (6-1, 2-0 NGF) v Third Dag (3-1, 0-1 NGF)

This was another really good fight.  Third Dag had a real tough fight for his NGF debut, but he showed he was more than capable to handle the tough competition in the Heavyweight division.  Dag was able to use his wrestling skills to take Battailen down; I just think he tried too much.  Armand showed is good ground skills as he was able to land 13-17 strikes on his feet.  The turning point happened in the 3rd, on a takedown attempt from Dag, both fighters came down and Dag had his head and neck twisted.  It looked like he almost knocked himself out.  Battailen was able to push Dag off and knocked Dag out with a vicious left hook just 11 seconds into the 3rd.  The division better take warning of Armand Battailen.

Middleweight Fight

#7 Jambo Alvez (9-4, 3-1 NGF) v #13 Milan Savic (4-2 NGF

A upset as Savic moves into the top 10 by beating Jambo Alvez with a reverse naked choke 2:30 into the 3rd round.  It was a sad site out there as Jambo Alvez was reduced to just trying take down after take down.  He was not in shape nor did he have a good game plan, he attempted 23 take downs landing just 4 or them.  When on the ground he did little.  It was a Alvez we haven’t seen, his punches were slow and had nothing on them.  Savic on the other hand controlled this fight, easily avoiding strikes and when he was taken down; he controlled and got back to his feet.  The fight came when Savic easily escaped a take down by Alvez, got his back and sunk in the choke.  The nice move also gave the SOTN award to Savic.

Heavyweight Fight

#16 Ignat Kaigorodov (5-4, 2-2 NGF) v #9 Tweek Sanguine (7-2, 3-2 NGF)

This one started with Ignat Kaigorodov getting the take down, but that’s his highlight.  Kaigorodov got the take down and did nothing.  He tried a few strikes but Tweek Sanquine defended well, then Sanquine used a nice scissor sweep to get on top.  Ignat did use a nice move to take Tweek’s back, but couldn’t stay there long as Tweek moved into half guard.  At one point Sanquine started to land some elbows, one dazed Kaigorodov.  After a quick punch, Sanquine grabbed onto a dangling arm and ended the fight with a nasty Kimura just 1:26 of the 1st.

MAIN CARD

Super Heavyweight Fight

#6 David Miller (6-3, 3-1 NGF) v #2 Iury Sinistrov (6-4, 2-1 NGF)

This was not one of my better predicted reviews, and here’s a prime example.  I thought Iury Sinistrov was motivated for a title shot and just too much for David Miller…wrong.  This wasn’t a great fight, don’t get me wrong.  Miller won this, but out sided of showing us that you do not want to be mounted by him, there wasn’t really anything to take.  The fight went to the mat and really the fight was spent with these two trying to improve position.  Miller was able to get to mount and when Sinistrov actually trapped his own arm trying to escape, Miller dropped some huge bombs to get the stoppage.  You would think Sinistrov lost his title shot after this one and will need another few fights first now.  Miller does move up and maybe just 1 more win away from a title fight.

Heavyweight Fight

#8 David Abbott Jr (9-7, 1-3 NGF) v #13 Andrew Golota (8-3, 3-1 NGF)

Another wrong prediction from me, I guess my crystal ball wasn’t working for this event.  David Abbott Jr. was in need of a win bad.  He was in the press recently talking about how upset he was with the NGF and his matchups.  So you thought he’d come out and be angry and ready to impress, but it was Andrew Golota who came out firing.  Golota was able to land several early strikes, one cutting Abbott and looked to put Abbott in defense mode right away.  Abbott changed up plans and went for take downs, which he did get.  The 2nd round was all Abbott, he was able to take Golota down and try and wear him out.  There wasn’t a lot of action in the 2nd, but Abbott clearly controlled the round and had Andrew breathing out of his mouth to start round 3.  Golota got back to the basics in round three, darting in and out and landing strikes.  He used excellent boxing in round three to score very well and even with the 2 takedowns, I thought Golota did plenty to win that round.  As it turns out, the judges agreed and Andrew Golota took this one by majority.  It was a great fight and earned the FOTN.  After the fight David Abbott Jr. told our ring announcer Joe Hoygan that this was his last fight in the NGF and stormed off like a child.  Oh well, Golota will move into the top 10.

Super Heavyweight Fight

#1 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllllllllllll lllllllllllllIIIIllIIIIl (6-0 NGF) v #4 Sergei Svetlakov (5-2, 1-1 NGF)

“Dumb Name” showed he is the class of the Super Heavyweight division.  He has never been in real trouble in any of his 6 fights and as soon as the NGF sees it time for a 265+ champion, there is no doubt “Dumb Name” will be one of the fighters.  Sergei Svetlakov is talented, there is no doubt, but he was no match for IIIIIIIIIlll.   “Dumb Name” opened the round by connecting on a huge right hand that cut Svetlakov and stunned him, instantly; DN drove in and took Sergei down.  DN then took advantage of a poor submission attempt from the bottom by Svetlakov, mounted and put Sergei out cold with a straight right hand!  Only reason this wasn’t KOTN is because there was a 5 second KO.

Co-Main Event:

Heavyweight Fight

#2 Raul Zergopalitix (6-3, 2-2 NGF) v #4 Rinky Spider (5-0, 3-0 NGF)

Oh I was so excited to see this one.  Raul Zergopalitix and Rinky Spider, both these guys have looked so good or late and Zergopalitix would have secured a title shot with a win.  Well, I predicted he would, boy was I wrong!  Rinky Spider was angry and man is this guy scary!  Raul did what he normally does, he tried for the take downs, he didn’t throw a strike and he finally met his match.  Spider showed excellent take down defense skills, this is going to cause the rest of the division to take note.  He has power like a horse!  He was able to end this at 55 seconds of the 1st when he pushed Raul away in a clinch and landed a quick right hook on the break that dropped Zergopalitix to the mat.  Rinky Spider has now moved himself into the #1 contender position.  News after the fight was that former champion Leifur Le will be back fighting in 6 weeks.  Le had fallen of the grid and was stripped of his title for inactivity.  Oh boy, I can’t wait for Spider and Le!

Main Event

Welterweight Fight

#11 Allan Starsky (9-1, 1-0 NGF) v #5 Chad Hardy (5-1 NGF)

Allan Starsky moves into the top 10 by beating Chad Hardy with a 2nd round TKO.  Starsky making his NGF debut looked outstanding.  Both fighters looked in good shape for this one, both looked quick and light on their feet.  Starsky seemed to have a little better foot work and worked some better strikes.  Hardy often was a step slower on the counters and his punches; he landed just 5 of 48 strikes while Starsky was able to land 21 or his 45 attempts.  The big moment came when Hardy darted in but was met with a stiff jab and it wobbled Chad’s knees.  Allan move in with punches and the fight was stopped 2:54 of the 2nd.
