UNDER CARD

Heavyweight Fight

#19 Ivan Kuznetsov (5-3, 2-3 NGF) v #8 Oleg Alekseev (8-4, 4-2 NGF)

This one was quick, easy and one that Oleg Alekseev needed to silence his critics.  Alekseev needed just 58 seconds to put Kuznetsov to sleep.  Oleg did what he always does, shot in for the take down, got it, mounted and crushed Ivan Kuznetsov into a deep, deep sleep.  Oleg breaks the 2 fight losing streak and will look to move closer to another title shot with another win.

Welterweight Fight

#10 Adam Yauch (5-2 NGF) v #16 Michael Lescott (5-5, 1-2 NGF)

Adam Yauch moves up the ranks after destroying Michael Lescott just 3:07 of the 1st round.  Yauch was faster and better, moving in and out landing strikes and Lescott had no answer.  Lescott was able to bring Adam down very early, but did nothing, and when the two were stood up, Yauch cut Lescott and then knocked him down, while Lescott was down against the cage, Yauch threw 3 or 4 punches to the face before the ref could step in.

Super Heavyweight Fight

#10 Paulo Cesar Silva (2-1 NGF) v #7 Buddy Threadgood (5-2, 4-2 NGF)

Buddy Threadgood got back on the winning trail, in a big way.  Threadgood riding a 2 fight losing streak, needed a win over 10 ranked Paulo Silva and he did, and looked very good.  Threadgood trying using leg kicks early, and survived getting taken down twice in the 1st round and ended up dropping Silva.  Threadgood landed some nice shots that cut Silva, but the 1st round might have been given to Silva after he was able to take down Threadgood and do a bit of damage.  The 2nd round was all Buddy and Silva was KO’ed 2:27 of the 2nd.

Light Heavyweight Fight

#16 Vinicius Oliveira (2-3, 2-2 NGF) v #10 Kadir Demir (7-1, 2-1 NGF)

Well I thought this was going to be an easy 1st round win for Kadir, but Vinicius Oliveira was much more of a challenge.  This one was the best fight of the night, getting the obvious FOTN award.  Very entertaining, both fighters trading strikes, both fighters willing to stand toe to toe and give the fans a great show.  Kadir Demir was the one that was able to land a higher percentage of strikes, while Oliveira had bouts of wild punches that caught nothing but air.  In the 2nd round, Demir dropped Oliveira and looked to end the fight, but seemed to regain his composure after Demir waved him back to his feet.  In the end, Demir won this one with a unanimous decision.

Bantamweight Fight

#7 Jon Erik Andersen (10-7, 4-3 NGF) v #16 Stanislav Popovich (5-3, 1-2 NGF)

Ok…um…let me see…let me do a recap of this one…punch…face…over.  Seriously, I don’t know what else to write.  I don’t know if they forgot to start the clock, but according to the official score card, this one was ended just 5 seconds in.  I’m not sure how in 5 seconds Andersen was able to knock Popovich down with a head kick, waves him back to his feet, then a 2 punch combination to the jaw…seems like a lot in 5 seconds.  But anyway, Andersen showed his power and gets the KOTN and probably will be hard to beat for quickest KO of the season award.

MAIN CARD

Heavyweight Fight

#10 Petr Jakovlev (5-1 NGF) v #4 Roman Kowalski (6-5, 3-3 NGF)

Wow did I get this one wrong.  I really thought Kowalski would be able to defend a take down, and maybe hurt Jakovlev…WRONG!  Jakovlev was able to score the early take down, and as usual, he was able to control Kowalski on the ground, then after escaping a desperation triangle attempt from Kowalski, he proceeded to pound on Roman’s face, landing 26 strikes and stopping this fight at 4:25 of the 1st.  Petr Jakovlev will certainly be getting a top 5 fighter next fight.

Lightweight Fight

#4 Varshik Gerich (8-2 NGF) v Ryan King (8-2, 2-1 NGF)

Varshik Gerich wants the title, but he knows he has to fight better fighters then who he’s disposed of to date, his 2nd real test was Ryan King, and Gerich comes up short.  This wasn’t a real exciting fight, a lot of rolling around on the mat, but both fighters fought hard, but King’s BJJ was superior.  King was able to take Gerich down in the 1st, he controlled the action and tried 3 different submissions.  Gerich showed that good submission defense, but he wasn’t able to do any scoring.  In the 2nd Varshik was able to find his range a little more.  He actually did some damage in the clinch in the 2nd, and he won the round.  The 3rd King was able to get the early take down, and Gerich was reduced to submission defense for the entire round, no other way to score that 3rd round but for King.  King wins the fight 29-28 from all 3 judges.

Bantamweight Fight

#12 Jonathan Brookins (9-4, 2-2 NGF) v #2 Maksim Zotov (6-2, 5-2 NGF)

This was a good fight, but Jonathan Brookins was in total control and pretty much dominated at every point of this fight.  Brookins looked very good and showed he’s ready for this title run.  Maksim Zotov may have lost his title shot opportunity with this loss, but he can get right back in it with a win next fight.  How dominating was Brookins?  Try 17 or 17 on head punches, how about 18 of 18 strikes in the clinch, and if that’s not good enough, 4 of 4 in take downs, and 23 of 27 in ground strikes.  With all these strikes landed, it’s amazing Zotov has a face at all!  Maksim really could do nothing and his striking defense was terrible.  It was just one of those fights, everything Brookins threw landed and everything Zotov wanted to do he couldn’t.

Co-Main Event:

Bantamweight Title Fight

#1 Arthur Pirozhkov (9-2, 7-2 NGF) v #9 Boris Yurinov (5-2, 3-2 NGF)

I for one am so happy for this fight and for the result.  We have a upset and your new Bantamweight Champion is Boris Yurinov!  Arthur Pirozhkov is a great fighter, no doubt about it, but he is just not a fun or exciting fighter.  He is 9-2 in his career and he does it by never throwing any strikes standing up.  It works, he’s a fantastic BJJ fighter and that’s why this is MMA and not boxing.  He did it again, just like these two fighters first fight, Pirozhkov was able to pull guard and instantly tried to end this one with a few submissions.  Boris was able to stall long enough for the ref to stand them up, and boy oh boy Yurinov went to work.  He thrashed Pirozhkov with strikes, easily moving in and out with jabs, kicks and hooks.  1st round was all Boris Yurinov.  2nd round was just like the 1st.  Pirozhkov getting Yurinov down and trying 3 submissions, but Boris battering Arthur while the two were standing.  The fight came to a grinding halt in the 3rd, Pirozhkov got the take down, then the entire round was Arthur going for submissions, and Yurinov defending.  Arthur Pirozhkov was 0-6 in submissions in round 3.  The next 2 rounds were pretty much the same story, Boris smoking Pirozhkov standing up, Pirozhkov getting a takedown then trying submissions.  The fight went to the judges and let’s give it up for them, they saw that the fighter dominated and gave the win to Yurinov 49-47, 49-46, 49-46.  Arthur Pirozhkov attempted 21 take downs and was successful on just 5.  He landed no strikes and only attempted 2 standing up, he only attempted 6 ground strikes.  Here was his game, submissions, he attempted 21 of them and obviously didn’t get any of them.  Boris Yurinov was dominating standing up, he actually attempted 30 leg kicks that probably worked into why Arthur couldn’t finish a lot of his take downs.

Main Event

Lightweight  Title Fight

#1 Tolek Banan (10-1, 3-0 NGF) v #3 Jameson Dredd (7-2, 2-2 NGF)

I thought this was going to be Jameson Dredd pulling this one out and becoming the new champion, I was Dredd wrong.  This one was a stand up, toe to toe fight and it was good!  These two fighters threw punches with one thing in mind, either knock out or be knocked out.  Tolek Banan was the more aggressive of the two; he controlled the center of the cage and was landing more strikes.  It was around the 2:45 mark of the round when Banan was able to connect on a left-right combination that staggered Dredd.  Banan moved in with a hard right hand that sent Dredd to his knees and after a few more shots the ref had to move in.  And still you’re Lightweight Champion, TOLEK BANAN!  After the fight we learned that Jameson Dredd has changed his name…again, he is now known as James Jameson.  It was a little sad, Jameson’s manager was disappointed in the performance, and you never like to see it, but he announced he was releasing Jameson.  So let’s hope he’s signed soon since he still has 1 fight on his NGF contract.  He’s a good, talented kid, someone should sign him.
