NGF 33 Review

UNDER CARD

Light Heavyweight Fight

#11 Travis Jones (7-3, 3-2 NGF) v #14 Mamed Khalidov (3-2, 2-2 NGF)

This one was all Jones from the beginning.  Travis Jones was able to land many strikes and play good defense to get the unanimous decision win over Mamed Khalidov.  I predicted this one would be a decision, as both fighters don’t go for many power shots.  Jones was able to knock down Khalidov and went to the mat to try and submit, but Mamed was able to recover.  Khalidov was never able to find his range, landing just 7 of 46 strikes.

Welterweight Fight

#21 Pavel Petrov (4-4, 0-2 NGF) v #12 Daemon Mustacho (4-0, 2-0 NGF)

Daemon Mustacho shows he’s a force inside the welterweight division with a dominating performance over Pavel Petrov.  Mustacho showed his dominance while standing up, as he was able to land many strikes.  He worked over Petrov’s legs and also when Pavel looked to get some distance, Mustacho quickly got inside, clinched and did damage there.  The big shot was in a Muay Thai clinch, Mustacho landed two huge knees that jelly legged Petrov.  He finished him with a uppercut at 2:58 of round 2.

Bantamweight Fight

#15 Tony Frost (4-3, 4-2 NGF) v #17 Jack Judo (3-0 NGF)

Well this was the ol’ puncher vs Jiu Jitsu fighter and it was the bjj fighter getting the take down and the puncher didn’t have a chance.  Tony Frost would have easily won this if he was able to defend the take down, but he couldn’t and this fight was a boring snore fest as Frost was reduced to a submission defense machine.  Over and over he defended the submission, Jude tried them all.  In the 2nd, it was almost as if Frost just got bored himself, as on the 20th submission attempt, Judo was final able to armbar Fost for the win.

Featherweight Fight

#3 Vladimir Parkachev (6-6, 2-0 NGF) v #9 Billy Perez (7-1, 0-1 NGF)

Vladimir Parkachev missed weight and this fight was a no contest.  These two will try this again at Fight Night 16 on February 6th.

Middleweight Fight

#7 Darius Elerman (9-2, 2-0 NGF) v #5 Lenard Skinnard (5-3 NGF

)

Darius Elerman moves into the top 5 with his 4th straight submission win.  Elerman was able to land the first strike of the contest, quickly, and it opened up a cut on Lenard Skinnards forehead.  Skinnard was then unable to defend Elermans 1st take down attempt and the 1st round was all Darius.  In the 2nd Skinnard was able to keep it standing for a while, but was eventually taken down.  The fight had a controversial moment when Elerman landed a elbow that was borderline illegal, he was given a warning, but the damage was already done.  While Skinnard was rocked, Elerman was able to lock up an arm and quickly broke the clasped hands to armbar Skinnard at 3:57 of the 2nd.

MAIN CARD

Light Heavyweight Fight

#3 Rogerio Mustacho (7-1, 6-1 NGF) v #2 Zergatron Megalopolis (7-2, 4-2 NGF)

What a fight!  Okay, NOT!  This was the biggest let down of the night.  I was excited to see two good fighters battle it out with one man, one warrior, one light heavyweight standing.  Well Rogerio Mustacho was that fighter standing, but this certainly wasn’t the battle I thought.  Mustacho pulled a Brock Lesner on Megalopolis and just rushed straight at him, dropped him, and then proceeded to pound on his face.  The big moment happened when Mustacho was able to mount Zergatron, he then demolished Megalopolis and the fight was stopped just 3:40 of the 1st.  Zergatron didn’t have a single stat in the fight, nothing.  Nice win by Mustacho, but a disappointing fight.  After the fight, Rogerio called out Johnny Jackson saying he wanted to fight the “golden boy”.

Light Heavyweight Fight

#6 Dmitry Boitsoff (10-4, 2-2 NGF) v #5 Andrej Kavelin (6-3, 4-3 NGF)

Another great matchup only to have fans really disappointed.  Andrej Kavelin tried to box and get some excitement for the fans, but he was wrestled to the mat where he had no chance.  Kavelin landed the first significant strike of the contest, a 3 punch combo opened up a small cut on the cheek of Boitsoff.  From there Boitsoff was able to land a nice throw take down from the cage and land in side guard.  Boitsoff showed his black belt BJJ skills as he quickly transitioned from an arm triangle to an anaconda choke that had Kavelin’s face turning purple, and in a matter of seconds Kavelin was gone to nighty night land.

Light Heavyweight Fight

#10 Johnny Jackson (10-3, 1-0 NGF) v #4 Martyn Musgrave (17-10, 3-4 NGF)

A fight that shows how good “JJ” is and how the sport may be passing Martyn Musgrave by.  I never think a fighter would be scared of someone, hell, they fight for sport, so how can anyone be scared, but Musgrave looked scared.  He held on to Jackson for dear life and looked like he was just trying to get through 3 rounds and collect a pay check.  Jackson was a man and he was fighting a boy.  JJ cut Musgrave with a 3 punch combo just seconds into the fight.  The only thing Martyn was able to do was drag Jackson down, but that was short lived.  Jackson was back to his feet and he battered Musgrave on the outside and in the clinch.  The fight turned into this, 3 or 4 unanswered punches in the clinch from Jackson, Musgrave unsuccessful with a takedown, 3 or 4 unanswered punches from Jackson and a failed take down by Musgrave.  Jackson simply just worked over Musgrave, landing 36 of 43 head strikes in the clinch.  The big shot was a quick upper cut followed by and little jab in the clinch which rocked Musgrave.  Jackson was able to push Musgrave back against the cage, and as Martyn bounced off back towards Jackson, he unloaded a right hand that put Musgrave out cold at 4:40 of the 2nd round.

Co-Main Event:

Featherweight Title Fight

#1 Andreas Almdudler (5-1 NGF) v #2 Vito Ferrari (9-4, 2-0 NGF)

This fight was so anticipated, I could not wait to see these two top featherweights.  In the preview I wrote about the deadly kicks that Vito Ferrari had and he showed exactly that in this one.  It’s just a shame that Andreas Almdudler didn’t try something different, he went for the take downs, 3 failed attempts and that’s it, no strikes no nothing.  Vito fought off the take downs, land a few strikes and then BAMB!  A violent head kick from Ferrari and Almdudler was out and sent crashing into the cage in a ugly, twisted clump.  And just like that, 33 seconds into this one we have our first ever featherweight champion, VITO FERRARI!

Main Event

Heavyweight Title Fight

#4 Elbrys Gora (12-2, 0-1 NGF) v #16 Sam Winchester (6-2, 1-0 NGF)

Two fighters making their NGF debuts and it’s for the vacant heavyweight title.  Just a few months ago, the NGF had a champion, Leifur Le.  After he successfully defended his title at NGF 27, he went off the radar.  Due to the inactivity, he was stripped of his belt.  Elbrys Gora was, in a way, already given the title.  There were headlines saying this fight was just a formality, that Gora was just too strong of a fighter.  A black belt in BJJ, there was no way Sam Winchester could win this…um, nobody bothered to tell Sam.  The bell rang and it was both fighters, slowly circling the cage, both fighters looking for their opening, neither wanting to make a mistake.  Then 15 seconds in, it was the perfect start for Sam Winchester, Gora began his take down attempt, and Winchester had perfect timing and caught Gora with a head kick, not only stunning him, but cutting him also.  At the time I thought it to be a mistake, but Winchester didn’t jump on the stunned Gora, instead Winchester almost looked stunned himself and he relaxed.  Elbrys regained his composure and drove through with a take down.  There was a lot of struggling, nothing much going on, a few strikes thrown that really didn’t land by Gora.  Elbrys did try a few submissions, one kimura and one armbar both looked tight, but Winchester was able to escape.  The armbar was pretty tight, but Sam was not only able to get out, he was able to reverse and get into on top and get it back to guard.  The turning point of this fight was actually a mistake from Gora.  He was trying to get back into a more dominating position, but he was sloppy and Winchester was able to mount Elbrys.  From there, Sam was able start raining down strikes, and the cut on Gora was now a mess, blood rushing out and Gora was in big trouble.  Just seconds later the ref stepped in and the fight had to be stopped.  And now your new HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, SAM WINCHESTER!  The ring interview talked with Sam after the announcement and this is what Sam had to say.

Interviewer: Hey Sam take a moment to answer some questions?

Sam: YES!

Interviewer: How does it feel to be the NGF Heavyweight champion?

Sam: It’s a dream come true man I love fighting for these guys they are a great Fernando and Chad are a great team and I am honored to be a champion here. Never been more excited in my life this is euphoric.

Interviewer: Can you walk us through the fight, what you were thinking, and the preparation/game plan for the fight?

Sam: Going into the fight I knew I would have to adjust my game plan if the original didn't work out but we had two plans. The first was to close the distance and cut Gora up in the clinch. The second was don’t get submitted and stay patient if on the ground. When the fight started I was ready to go, I got taken down and I stayed calm waiting for my opening to land a sweep even though he has a good ground game mine is pretty solid too so I was confident he wouldn't submit me. Finally when he went for the armbar I knew that was my chance to reverse positions so I did so, I remember looking down at him thinking should I stand or continue on the ground but he seemed beaten so I went ahead and started pounding on him and that opened his cut up enough to get the stoppage. Great fight and Gora is one tough dude I thought I would be able to defend his take downs but wow lightning fast in and down to the mat.
