Jose Oquendo - The Secret Weapon

Video article by Knockout Bob

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo Not much is known about The Secret Weapon before he entered into professional MMA. But his career inside the octagon has been watched pretty closely. Jose Oquendo currently stands at 14-3 with 4 title fight wins, 6 fight of the night awards and 4 knockout of the night awards. Today's story will be a recap of all 17 of those fights.

Jose Oquendo (Professional MMA Debut) vs Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva (0-1)
Jose Oquendo's first fight was against the heavy handed former kickboxer, Wanderlei Silva in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Silva had lost his first fight rather quickly, getting submitted in just 41 seconds. Both guys were almost purely strikers at the time so everyone knew this fight was going to stay on the feet. Jose had never boxed before and was only taught to use his kicks. No one gave him much of a chance coming into the fight. Once the fight came however, Oquendo dominated all 3 rounds, winning rounds 2 & 3 with 10:8 scores by all 3 judges. He outworked Silva by using only kicks and even knocked him down once in the second round with a huge head kick but he was unable to follow it up with another one. Throwing only 1 punch (and missing it) the entire fight, Oquendo walked out with his first win, a unamious decision victory.

Jose Oquendo (1-0) vs Thiago Alves (Professional MMA Debut)
Oquendo's strategy going into fight 2 was exactly the same as fight 1. Kick Alves's head off! Although he didn't quite kick his head off, he came close. Oquendo came out throwing overwhelming kicks that left Alves stunned, he didn't throw a single strike all fight. About 45 seconds into the fight, Oquendo landed a head kick that sent Alves to the mat. He quickly waved him back up just to land another beauty of a head kick that sent Alves walking away like a drunk until the inevitable face plant stoppage in the center of the octagon. Even Oquendo couldn't help but laugh at the bizarre finish! After just 57 seconds into round 1, Oquendo walked away with his first head kick knockout and his second professional MMA win.

Jose Oquendo (2-0) vs Roycio "The Trap" Gracie (6-1)
For Oquendo's third fight, he was approached by an actual organization called Amateur Brawling (although it was a professional MMA organization) to fight on their first ever card. Tired of making $50 a fight on 3 days notice, he was in! His opponent was a strong BJJ player known for his slick submissions and inability to show up for a fight, NC'ing 2 of his last 3 fights. Luckily for Oquendo, he showed up for this one. Oquendo came in with his typical all kick and no punch strategy which semmed to leave Gracie just as stunned as Alves was in the last fight. Gracie only threw 1 punch and attempted a few takedowns all fight, with nothing landing. Oquendo on the other hand mauled gracie with leg, body & head kicks. He even scored a takedown into full mount shortly after knocking Gracie down with a head kick. Oquendo eventually scored the inevitable knockout 3:14 into round 2 with another brutal head kick. The org folded after their next event and Oquendo never fought for them again.

Jose Oquendo (3-0) vs Graham "Macho" Mahon (6-11)
For his fourth fight he went back to the QFC ciruit and was set to fight veteran "Macho" Mahon for his retirement fight. Jose Oquendo put on an amazing striking clinic in this fight. He threw a total of 235 strikes and landed every single one of them, including 25 punches this time! Just like his previous fights, Oquendo's ferocity was too much and all Mahon did was try takedown after takedown, failing in all 14 attempts. Jose won all 3 rounds 10:8 for an easy win. After this beatdown, Mahon was asked if he regretted staying for one last fight. His response was "Are you kidding me? I feel like I just got run over by a heard of fucking cattle. I should have never been in this fight, I don't belong in this sport". Mahon went on to retire after this fight. Oquendo was blasted by fans after the fight for "toying" with Mahon in the ring when he should have simply finished the fight. Oquendo vowed to never do it again and to always finish his fights from now on.

Jose Oquendo (4-0) vs Seek "&" Destroy (1-0) - Round 1 of B2L MW Tournament
Approached by an upcoming organization called Built 2 Last in Montreal to fight in their tournament for a potentially huge payday and the middleweight championship belt, Oquendo couldn't turn it down. He was completely broke at the time and needed the money. Unforunately in the hustle to get money for a plane ticket, he wasted some time and arrived an hour late to the first fight of the tournament and received a no contest. The org promoter wasn't happy but he understood what happened and really wanted Oquendo to be one his rising stars. So he payed to move him out to Montreal, under the condition that he stay loyal to B2L for the tournament. The deal was made! Oquendo was now living and fighting in Montreal, was signed to an upcoming org and he was finally getting paid. Things were going good for Jose at this point. Destroy retired after the fight for unknown reasons.

Jose Oquendo (4-0, 1 NC) vs Bruce McGee (Professional MMA Debut) - Round 1 of B2L MW Tournament
Immediately following the B2L 2 NC, Oquendo was glad to still be in the tournament after such a huge flounder. He was matched against MMA newcomer and muay thai specialist Bruce McGee to replace the now retired Seek Destroy for round 1 of the tournament. This fight didn't last long as McGee was caught with a left hook about 50 seconds into the fight. He tried to recover but Oquendo quickly mounted him and finished him off with a few more strikes. Oquendo with another quick knockout 55 seconds into round 1.

Jose Oquendo (5-0, 1 NC) vs Dam "Big" Mouth (4-5) Round 2 of B2L MW Tournament
For round 2 of the tournament, Oquendo was matched with the well rounded Dam Mouth. Mouth had done something no other fight had done up until this point, put Oquendo in danger. Mouth had taken him down quick and early, working to side control before attempting a kneebar, but Oquendo escaped and reversed the position and stalled until the ref stood them up. But Mouth quickly got another takedown, attempted a couple more failed submissions until Oquendo was able to stand back up. From here on it was all Oquendo's fight. Throwing his signature power kicks that left Mouth unable to land anything when Oquendo rocked Mouth with a first head kick and quickly followed it up with another that left Mouth unconscious with just 26 seconds left in the first round.

Jose Oquendo (6-0, 1 NC) vs Harry Hammer (4-0) - Final Round of B2L LHW Tournament - Middleweight Championship Fight
In the final round of the tournament, Oquendo was matched with the heavy handed GnP specialist Harry Hammer. Hammer had blasted threw his last 3 opponents with first round knockouts and was looking to do the same against Oquendo for the belt. Oquendo was looking to do the same against Hammer, but only one man can come out on top. Hammer landed a couple of early takedowns but Oquendo was able to work back to his feet before landing his power head kick and knocking Hammer down just 3 minutes into the fight. Oquendo then used the oldest trick in the book on a dazed Hammer, look low, kick high! And BOOM the lights went out for Hammer as Oqeundo walked away the new B2L MW champion. Oquendo was given the nickname "The Secret Weapon" for his devistating head kicks during an interview after the fight.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (7-0, 1 NC) vs Peter "The Anaconda" Just (3-1) - Middleweight Championship Fight
For his first title defense, Oquendo was put against "The Anaconda", a dangerous ADCC grappling champion with good standup. Peter Just dominated round 1, taking him down within the first minute and holding him there the rest of the round. Oquendo was also cut after being mounted and taking some big punches. In round 2 Oquendo started to find his range but after a couple minutes, Just managed to land a perfect judo throw into side control. He then grabbed Oquendo's arm and started working for an americana. He tried to defend but The Anaconda just tighted it up more until Oquendo was forced to tap 3:01 into round 2. Peter Just walked away the new champion and Jose walked away with his first ever loss.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (7-1, 1 NC) vs Keijo "Ylimielinen" Sardiini (13-7)
After suffering his first loss, Jose was matched against the well rounded veteran, Keijo Sardiini. Oquedo just looked off his game in this fight. He was overwhelmed by the strikes of Sardiini and was dominated for the second fight in a row. About a minute and a half into round 2, Sardiini landed a terrorizing right-left combo that rocked Jose. He stayed on his feet as Sardiini followed it up with a big body shot and a leg kick. He then landed a hook that sent Oquendo stumbling, following it up with a straight right and another hook that landed right on the button, dropping Oquendo to the mat! Sardiini pounced and landed several unanswered blows and as the ref stood watching, Oquendo tapped out under a barrage of strikes. Devistated by his performance, Jose told the fans he was going to rethink his gameplan and come back even stronger.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (7-2, 1 NC) vs Kick "Kickflip" Flip (4-0)
At this point, the Built 2 Last organization is now running it's 22nd event and with Oquendo as their now failing star, he needed to make a big statement in this fight. He was set to face off against the intelligent counter striker, Kick Flip. Undefeated at the time, Kickflip was riding a big hype train and Oquendo shut it down. In typical fashion, Oqeundo finished the fight 4:38 into round 1 with his now signature double head kick finish. Flip looked like the earlier Oquendo opponent, standing stunned, unable to move. He attemped just 1 move the entire fight, a takedown, which failed. Kickflip never regained his old form as he lost his next 2 fights before retiring.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (8-2, 1 NC) vs "The Storm" Wesley Snow (5-2)
Coming off a big win and looking for another title shot, Jose was matched against then top contender, Wesley Snow. Snow was an excellent boxing brown belt at the time with 3 of his wins coming by submission. Many doubted that Oquendo would win this fight. Round 1 was big for The Secret Weapon as he knocked Snow down midway threw the round and opened up a cut on his head, which he opened up even more as the round went on. The cutman must of done a good job though because it stayed closed the rest of the fight. Jose also gassed himself out a little bit during the first round trying to finish the fight and lacked power for the second two rounds. None the less, Jose won the fight via unanimous. After his win he called out the current champion, Keijo "Ylimielinen" Sardiini, who had dominated Jose just 2 fights ago.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (9-2, 1 NC) vs Keijo "Ylimielinen" Sardiini (15-7) - Middleweight Championship Fight
Going into this fight, Oquendo was a big underdog. He was riding a 2 fight win streak but so was Sardiini, with one of those wins being over Oquendo and the other one for the belt. We saw the normal Oquendo come out this time, though, as he lit Sardiini up. Landing vicous leg kicks and punches that left Sardiini stunned and unwilling to throw much of anything. About 2 and half minutes into round 2, Oquendo landed a 4 punch combo that rocked Sardiini, he followed it up with a head kick that sent Keijo to the ground. He followed him down, landing more punches until the ref jumped in to stop it. At 2:34 into round 2, Oquendo had his belt back with another big knockout win!

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (10-2, 1 NC) vs "Kill or be killed" Gaule Crixius (5-0) - Middleweight Championship Fight For Jose's first title defense this time around, top contendor Gaule Crixius got his shot at the belt. Riding a 5 fight win streak to start his MMA career, the confident Crixius was looking for the upset. A traditional boxer with 4 knockout wins versus a may thai kickboxer with 6 knockout wins, everyone knew this was going to be fight of the night. Oquendo had other plans though, he ended it quickly. Just 37 seconds into the fight he unloaded his double headkicks that sent Crixius into retirement. Crixius reitred at 5-1 and would never return to the cage again for unkown reasons. Oquendo was ecstatic over the win and welcomed any challengers.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (11-2, 1 NC) vs "The Dragon" Paul Carter (10-4) - Middleweight Championship Fight With his first sucessful title defense under his belt, Jose's next challenger was the dangerous boxer-grappler Paul Carter who had 1 knockout and 8 submission finishes. The org had just been sold and the old B2L was now known as DiGNITY. Not much changed though, both promoters were great. Much like the last fight, Oquendo ended this one 1:04 into round 1 with the singnature double head kick finish. The second kick he landed lifted Carter clear off his feet. Making a good showing for the new promoter, Jose couldn't wait for his next fight.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (12-2, 1 NC) vs "The Existentialist" Jean Paul Sartre (7-0) - Middleweight Championship Fight Coming into this fight with 5 straight wins, Jose Oquendo was ready for the challenger. "The Existentialist" is a well rounded upcoming middleweight star that specializes in muay thai. Sartre came out firing on all cylinders early as he punished Oquendo's face. Opening up a cut on the very first strike and working it until the doc came in to stop the fight at 3:46 in the first round. The fans weren't happy but when the post fight interviewer asked Jose what he thought of the fight, he had this to say: "Wow, Jean Paul was overwhelming. This guy is for real, he's going to be a big star one day. Doc stoppage or not, I didn't see a way to overcome him. Great job to Sartre, much respect to him. He'll be champion for a long time."

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (12-3, 1 NC) vs Harry "Tamayo" Villegas (6-1) With both fighters coming off a loss to end their winning streaks, Harry Villegas and Jose Oquendo were matched up at DiGNITY 20. Both guys looking to bounce back, Villegas was a well rounded fighter who had 3 submissions wins, 2 knockout wins and 1 decision win before losing a unamious decision to the then undefeated 5-0 Johnny LaRusso. Oquendo made a victorious return knocking out Villegas just 49 seconds into round 1 by, you guessed it! double head kick knockout! Glad to be back on the winning side, Jose was looking forward to another run at the belt. DiGNITY had other plans though, and soon closed down. Offered a contract by Silver Standard Fighting in Montreal, Oquendo accepted the deal and signed on to fight veteran Albert Fish in his SSF debut.

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (13-3, 1 NC) vs Albert "Brooklyn Vampire" Fish (26-10) The veteran Albert Fish made himself known in the UVT organization, located in Rio de Janiero. Fish had 24 fights at UVT, with 14 of them being for the middleweight title and winning 11 of them. He was a sprawl and brawler that had a nice clinch game and a nice chin to fall back on. Oquendo knew he was in for a fight with the scrappy Brooklyn Vampire. As the fight started, Fish stuck to his roots using his traditional style, as did Oquendo. Just 20 seconds into the round Oquendo landed a head kick that cut Fish open. About 2 minutes in he landed another one that opened it up some more. And then at about 3:20 into round 1 he lands another one, this one rocked Fish but he he seemed to have recovered his senses right before Oquendo landed a big shot that sent the Fish back into the water for good. Winner by way of knockout, 3:30 into round 1, Jose Oquendo!

"The Secret Weapon" Jose Oquendo (14-3, 1 NC) vs Gorge "Ken Griffey" Junior (14-4) - Middleweight Championship Fight Now 27 years old with 17 fights under him, Oquendo is starting to become one of the older guys and his slow learning ability is catching up to him. None the less, Oquendo has earned yet another shot at the belt and is set to face off against powerful striker "Ken Griffey" Junior on 11-21-2011 at SSF16: Junior vs Oquendo. Junior is a pure sprawl and brawler, will he be enough to stop Oquendo or will his weak chin send him to the canvas when he faces The Secret Weapon? Come check out SSF 16 on the 21st to see what happens!
