UPF 27: 170lb Tourney Round 1 was a mixed martial arts event held by Ultimate Pit Fighting on March 23, 2013 at Hayashi's Lounge in Hilo, Hawaii.

Background

After welterweight champion Jake Tyler set sail for waters a bit more competitive with his skill set, Ultimate Pit Fighting announced that it would be holding a tournament to determine the new champion. The proposed tournament would feature eight of the best welterweights in the division; truly it was a winner takes all competition.

Official Fight Card

-[Welterweight bout]: Declan McCready def. Hank Patterson via TKO (Kick and Punches) at 2:51 of round 1 to move on to the tournament semi-final round.

-[Review]: Not a lot of strikes were thrown in this fight but McCready clearly dominated Patterson before finishing him.

-[Welterweight bout]: Oktawian August def. Slim Shady via KO (Punches) at 2:58 of round 1 to move on to the tournament semi-final round.

-[Review]: Good lord. August absolutely dominated Slim Shady on the feet. We knew that August has a good standup game but this solidified it; August easily countered a bunch of Shady's strikes, rocked him, and dropped him three times. To his credit, Shady stayed in there and kept getting up but it was all Oktawian August from start to finish.

-[Middleweight bout]: Henkka Reem def. Judge Nelson via Submission (Guillotine) at 0:50 of round 1.

-[Review]: Henkka Reem continues to impress as he moves on to 4-0 with this win. Judge Nelson was doing alright early on as he avoided the takedowns. It's obvious that Reem depends on the takedown to win the fight but once he gets guys down he is a finisher. Three of his four wins have come by way of guillotine choke and always in the first round.

-[Light-heavyweight bout]: Jose Lopez def. Jimmy Stone via Unanimous Decision.

-[Review]: This was a close fight that mostly took place in the clinch. Stone wanted to clinch very badly and he held a very slight edge in striking output from there. At a striking distance, however, it was all Lopez which won him the fight.

-[Middleweight bout]: Zack Barch def. Suriya Pinphet via TKO (Strikes) at 4:58 of round 1.

-[Review]: Barch scored the takedown and unloaded with strike after strike while searching for a submission. In the end the ground n pound was too much and he finished Pinphet in a dominant display.

-[Welterweight bout bout]: Al Bundy def. Courtney Drake via Unanimous Decision.

-[Review]: This was a highly competitive fight. Al Bundy was dominant from the top on the ground and dropped Drake multiple times on the feet. The only time Courtney Drake was really in control was in the third when he got a takedown early.

-[Welterweight bout bout]: Scott Banks def. Martin Caradagian via Unanimous Decision to move on to the tournament semi-final round.

-[Review]: Scott Banks dominated the first two rounds. His striking was so overwhelming that Caradagian couldn't even fantasize about getting one of his takedowns. Banks even seemed to stun Caradagian in the second with a powerful combination of strikes. In the third round, Caradagian got a takedown and he went to work searching for a submission to finish the fight. There just wasn't enough time for it and Banks defended too well.

-[Middleweight bout]: Zyd XV def. William Adama via Split Decision.

-[Review]: Zyd wanted to clinch and Adama wanted to bring the fight to the ground. In the end, Zyd XV's game plan was just enough to eek out a win over William Adama.

-[Welterweight bout]: Charlie Sheen def. Igor Crazy via Unanimous Decision to move on to the tournament semi-final round.

-[Review]: After all the talking, all of the interviews and the bickering; neither man was willing to go down before the other. Sheen's kickboxing experience showed on the feet and although Crazy secured a takedown in the second he didn't capitalize on it.

-[Heavyweight bout]: Rutger Crax def. YB Sol Jr via KO (Punch) at 0:36 of round 1.

-[Review]: Rutger Crax pushed an aggressive pace before rocking and finishing YB Sol Jr in lightning quick speed.
