UPF 1: Raise the Curtains is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by Ultimate Pit Fighting - Montreal on May 18, 2013 at Wild Bob's Bar in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Background

Given the rampant success and popularity of the fight organization 'Ultimate Pit Fighting' within the Hawaiian market, UPF president Dale Saw decided to expand his label and spread across North America. Three new branches opened almost immediately - UPF NY, UPF LA, and UPF MTRL.

UPF: Raise The Curtains represents a new day for the talent of Canada. Fighters from across Montreal, and neighboring cities, signed on to test their mettle in the ultimate proving grounds for young talent.

A lot is riding on the success of this first event. Will we prove to the world that we are the next major company? Will we take Montreal by storm and become the second most watched UPF show in history? Or will we fall to the wayside? Time will tell.

Official Fight Card

-[Light-heavyweight bout]:  Lewyn Martell  (0-0) versus The Prophet Malzahar (0-1)

-[Preview]: Boxing meets Muay Thai in this climatic first fight of the night. I'm your host, Sunny Sideup. Lewyn Martell is a young Thai boxer that is looking to make the transition to professional mixed martial arts. He has hit the gym hard in a desperate attempt to pick up the grappling game in anticipation of his debut. Meeting him in the middle is The Prophet Malzahar, a boxer that also seeks the fame and glory associated with the rising sport of MMA.

-[Light-heavyweight bout]:  Micky Manderlin  (0-1) versus Raoul Ramirez (0-2)

-[Preview]: Not much is known about Micky Manderlin. He is reported to be a Muay Thai fighter but he claims to be confident in grappling as well. In his lone fight, he was defeated via blitz from his opponent. Raoul Ramirez is a grappler that has found little success in his short career. He will be looking to turn that around here in his promotional debut.

-[Light-heavyweight bout]:  Pierre Matthews  (0-0) versus Maurice De La Rue (0-2)

-[Preview]: The boxing stylist Pierre Matthews takes on the Muay Thai enthusiast Maurice De La Rue. Maurice also holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jujitsu but very little to no wrestling. Should Matthews bring this fight to the ground, however, he will likely find himself in a world of trouble.

-[Heavyweight bout]:  Angus The Bear King  (1-1) versus Cleavland Brown (0-1)

-[Preview]: Despite being listed primarily as a boxer, Angus The Bear King utilizes a takedown heavy wrestling game to smother opponents. Cleavland Brown showcased a very similar style in his lone professional fight.

-[Light-heavyweight bout]: Dean The Supernatural (1-1) versus Ryan Russell (0-1)

-[Preview]: In his short career, Dean The Supernatural has shown that he has a diversified and dangerous game. He has power in his strikes but will take his opponent down if he feels that it will ensure him a victory. Ryan Russell is a Jujitsu style fighter who found nothing but defeat in his lone fight. Can he turn it around against The Supernatural?

-[Heavyweight bout]: Oliver Irvington (0-0) versus Biff Nugent (0-1)

-[Preview]: Oliver Irvington makes his professional debut with his purple belt in hand. He also has a very slight wrestling game which could enable him to bring this fight to the ground. He will certainly need to do so against Biff Nugent, a sprawl and brawl stylist that displayed fantastic escapes in his lone fight. Although he lost his debut, Nugent displayed fantastic escapes and a great deal of heart as he dragged his opponent into the deep waters by simply being too tough to put away. Had that fight been five rounds, well, Nugent might be an undefeated newcomer to the sport today.

-[Light-heavyweight bout]: Lord Vladimir (0-2) versus Vlad The Impaler (0-0)

-[Preview]: Lord Vladimir may have been unsuccessful in his prior two contests but he still stands as potentially one of the most skilled fighters at 205 lbs. After multiple opponents declined the fight with Vladimir, Vlad The Impaler moved up from welterweight to challenge the brute. The war of the Vlads is on and only one can walk away with a victory.

-[Light-heavyweight bout]: Sal Langreck (0-0) versus Uriah Gomez (1-1)

-[Preview]: Sal Langreck is one of the more well rounded fighters on this opening card. He has a history with boxing and is familiar to the Jujitsu circuit as well. He will be facing the freestyle fighter Uriah Gomez. Despite his skills in boxing, Gomez prefers to clinch and drag opponents to the mat for a little ground n pound.

-[A closer look]

(Sal Langreck)

-[Record]: 0-0

-[Height]: 6'2

-[Weight]: 219 lbs

-[Style]: Boxing, Brazilian Jujitsu

(Uriah Gomez)

-[Record]: 1-1

-[Height]: 6'2

-[Weight]: 208 lbs

-[Style]: Boxing, Wrestling

-[Welterweight bout]: Sean Sorrowe (1-0) versus Eddard Stark (1-0)

-[Preview]: The wrestler, Sean Sorrowe, displayed incredible knockout power in his lone fight on the regional circuit. This makes his UPF debut all the more exciting. Eddard Stark is a boxer who, in his debut on the regional trail, brutalized his opponent with straight and accurate punches that left his foe... shall we politely call it indisposed. Sorrows holds a wrestling advantage here but both men are relatively green at Jujitsu so anything could happen.

-[A closer look]

(Sean Sorrowe)

-[Record]: 1-0

-[Height]: 5'6

-[Weight]: 180 lbs

-[Style]: Boxing, Wrestling

(Eddard Stark)

-[Record]: 1-0 (1 KO)

-[Height]: 6'1

-[Weight]: 173 lbs

-[Style]: Boxing

-[Light-heavyweight bout]: Jack Tombstone (2-0) versus Philmore Butts (3-3)

-[Preview]: According to the unofficial rankings, Tombstone and Philmore sit at #1 and #3 in the entire organization, respectively. Tombstone displayed incredible heart in his first fight, getting rocked early to come back and win a dominant decision over his powerful opponent. In his second fight, he brutalized the poor guy with an early blitz that left him unconscious on the mat. With big heart and big chin comes big pressure to perform for this promising boxer. Can Tombstone overcome the experience of his upcoming foe and become a star in this new career? Philmore Butts, despite his unfortunate name, stands as one of the most well rounded fighters in the company. All of his wins have come via dramatic knockout. Butts has displayed dangerous ground n pound as well, finishing one of his early foes after sweeping him from beneath and pounding away at him from guard.

-[A closer look]

(Jack Tombstone)

-[Record]: 2-0 (1 KO)

-[Height]: 6'3

-[Weight]: 215 lbs

-[Style]: Boxing

(Philmore Butts)

-[Record]: 3-3 (3 KO)

-[Height]: 5'5

-[Weight]: 210 lbs

-[Style]: Boxing, Ground n Pound
