Last Monday on Vicious Challengers 12 in Helsinki we saw Xavier Gracie winning his third straight fight when he faced well-rounded striker Victory Agu. Victory Agu started out strong with a barrage of kicks and stopped Gracie’s takedown attempts but Gracie was determined and countered a kick with a huge takedown, when the fight hit the ground it was all she wrote.
Victory Agu didn’t stop scrambling but Gracie’s BJJ reigned supreme as he quickly and efficiently put a stop to Agu’s 5 fight winning streak. The dominating performance earned him a submission of the night bonus and a possible title shot in the near future.
After the fight I asked him about his future and the possibility of a title shot, this is what he had to say.
“My goal right now is winning as many matches as possible and hopefully retire as a bad-ass champion with a long winning streak. Is this a realistic goal? Hopefully. I know a lot of things can go wrong, but this is MMA, anything can happen and I will try my damn hardest to make my dream come through.”
Xavier Gracie isn’t getting any younger and it happens sometimes that an older fighter’s skills devolve. I think everyone can think of at least one example. Before his current 3 fight winning streak Gracie struggled and had only won 3 out his 9 last fights, with all his losses coming by KO or TKO. When he was asked about that he had this to say.
“Two of those fights were title fights and I know I have a weak chin but that’s something I was born with, there’s not much I can do about that. All I know is that when the bell rings I just need to take the fight to the ground to win.”
