Welcome to the review of Throwdown Fights first event, held May 11 at the Micro Arena in New York City.
The night started off with a Light Heavyweight bout between Jason Wind and Bobby Singer. Wind was coming off of a loss in his previous fight, while this was Singer's debut. Singer felt confident in the win because of his superior wrestling, evading Winds initial takedown and scoring his own instead. He worked some ground and pound, only to underestimate Winds BJJ. Wind was able to throw a leg up and lock in a triangle for a submission win in the first minute of the round.
The next fight of the night was a Middleweight bout between Antonio DeLuca and Steve Dragon which went to decision after three rounds. Dragon was unable to land strikes, and DeLuca controlled where the fight happened, scoring six takedowns to Dragon's one. DeLuca cut Dragon in the third round, but was unable to finish it. DeLuca took it by unanimous decision, scored 30:27.
The following match was also a Middleweight fight, between Connor Pye and Chris Matthews. Through out the fight Pye kept swinging for the fences with headkicks, but nothing connected. Matthews on the other hand played it safe, sticking mostly with body shots and a few combinations. Where he really shined though was his wrestling. Matthews scored ten takedowns with 100% accuracy. He went to finish it early on with an Americana, but couldn't get it. After cutting Pye halfway through the second round Matthews did what he could to keep it on the ground, though he failed to finish. He won by unanimous decisions, scored 27:30.
The next fight was a Light Heavyweight bout between the experienced Jimmy Sisphar and the newcomer Tony Smalls. Right out of the opening Smalls got the takedown and dominated the first round with ground and pound. Although he controlled Sisphar well, he failed to do major damage. The second round, Sisphar came out and showed why its dangerous to stand up with a Muay Thai fighter. Both fighters threw some shots that missed until Sisphar connected with a head kick as Smalls rushed in. He cut him open on the side of the head, but Smalls kept circling him. One minute into the round and Sisphar connected again, sending Smalls tumbling to the mat. Sisphar called him back to his feet, not wanting any part of Small's ground game. Smalls obliged, though still rocked and circled right into a final head kick that sent him out cold against the cage. Sisphar won at 1:12 of the second round by a head kick that would earn him Knockout of the Night.
The next bout was the Super Heavyweight Title Fight between Johnny DeMarco and Dan Thompson. DeMarco came in hoping to score a knockout with his superior boxing, while Thompson wanted to take it to the ground. DeMarco failed to put on any kind of performance, with Thompson controlling where the fight went and simply outclassed him. Thompson won by Arm Triangle in the second round to become the first TDF Super Heavyweight Champion.
The co-mainevent was a lightweight fight between Rodrigo Silva and Frank DuBont. Soon after the bell DuBont landed a jab that cut open Silva, only to recieve a head kick in the exchange. They went through a few exchanges until DuBont landed with a combination that rocked Silva within the first minute. DuBont took it to the ground only to have Silva try for the guillotine. Silva managed to survive the round, though DuBont dominated. The second round opened with another head kick by Silva, leading to a clinch by DuBont who then pulled guard. This was a huge mistake against the Purple Belt Silva, who cotinued to work his positions and end the match with an armbar from the bottom.
The mainevent was a Bantamweight Title Fight between Jamie Lawlor and Jackie Lee. It was an amazing match going back and forth. The first round was close, with Lee coming out and taking the second. Lawlor dominated the third round, scoring takedowns and some ground and pound. In the last minute Lee managed to grab a hold of Lawlors leg and nearly ended it with a kneebar, but Lawlor was able to escape. The fourth round saw Lee looking for another submission, but taking some poundings from Lawlor. The last round continued to be close, with the bout ultimately going to the judges. It was scored 49:46, 49:48, 49:46 in favor of Jamie Lawlor, the new TDF Bantamweight Champion.
Congratulations to all of the winners, and thanks to all of the fighters for making TDF 1: Inception a great success.
