HMMA 83 Preview

Event Preview: HMMA 83 Slinga v Thai
HEROIC
2013-05-25, London, Camden Conference Centre
Author:

Hello freaks and fight geeks itsa me “Sunshine” Weston Markson here for another preview, my partner and I Rudy “The Box” Knife will tell you what to expect out of HMMA 83, its slated to be a good night in the Camden conference center in London Saturday the 25th of May.

Rudy:  This is a solid show headlined by  a fight in the heavyweight division between two of the top ranked fighters, but there are a lot of good fights and rising stars on this card.  They will all be interesting to see who wins and where they go from here.

Weston:  Rudy some of these guys are rising stars and some of them are also fighters who formally had glory and are looking to get it back, I cant wait to see how these turn out!

MAIN EVENT

#6 Gun Slinga (13-6)  v  #4 "Boran"  Muay Thai    (21-10)

Weston:  The main event of HMMA 83 is a heavyweight clash between two of the divisions top contenders, Gun Slinga, and Muay Thai, the winner of the fight takes a big step towards getting an opportunity at the championship.  Since joining HMMA Gun Slinga has put the heavyweight division on notice that he has the power to stop any fight in the blink of an eye with a 4-1 record in HMMA and a two fight win streak he finds himself ranked 6th in the division and looking to get noticed as a contender.  Muay Thai hasn’t been in HMMA as long but his first fight in the promotion showed he could be an instant contender when he took out the former two time champion and member of the Hall of Fame French Toast, in just a minute and ten seconds.   It was a huge splash that sent one of the biggest debuting messages we have seen yet, a lot of people are comparing it to Anderson Silva’s debut against Chris Leben years ago in the UFC.  A lot is on the line in this one which will rise up to the challenge and prove to be a contender?

Rudy: NO! Im sorry everyone I just wanted to shout that really bad for no reason at all! NO!.  NO Way this fight isn’t going to be fireworks, two great strikers, two haarrrrd hitters, two fighters with 85% of their wins by (T)KO.  Im telling you don’t blink this fight will be ended very quickly at any moment.  I think the fighter who connects first cleanly will win.  This fight is very even one may say Slinga has a slight advantage on the feet, and Thai on the ground by I don’t expect either fighter will attempt or even think about a takedown here.

Prediction:  a knockout is all I can predict here.  Flip a coin that’s what we should all be doing.

CO-MAIN EVENT

#7 Tony Jax (20-9)  v  Frank "Fast Hands" Reynolds (13-4-2)

Weston:  The CO-MAIN event of HMMA 83 is a lightweight fight, 7th ranked Tony Jax, takes on Frank Reynolds, Reynolds might be 0-2 in HMMA but the level of competition he has faced has been grueling, he fought the champion in his first fight, and in his second he went up against a former #1 contender.   Not only has the competition been of the highest caliber but he was very competitive winning at least one round in each fight.  So although unranked Reynolds with a win or two could very well find himself right back in the mix at the top of the division.   Tony Jax comes into this fight ranked 7th after one impressive fight in HMMA caught the eye of many.  For Jax this fight will serve as a way to see if he deserves the #7 ranking and will show where he belongs in the division.

Rudy:   A lot of people right now are looking past “Fast Hands” In this fight and im not sure why!  I think he wins, but I will make that official in a moment,  these guys are evenly matched with a slight advantage in skills going to Jax possibly, although that’s unforeseen just yet, I think Reynolds has enough skill and the intangibles to swing the fight in his favor.  He is the more powerful of the two fighters who have both shown they like to stand and trade for this reason I am leaning towards Reynolds to win, but Jax has great skill, and enough power to never be counted out.  As he proved in his first fight he can end a fight when he needs it the most.

Prediction: I am picking Frank in this one by late TKO

MAIN CARD

 # 10 Agaton Piaskun (13-5-2)  v  Leonidas "The Phenom" Sheynauvah (13-9)

Weston:  The last fight heading into the main events is a light-heavyweight battle as 10th ranked Agaton Piaskun takes on Leonidas Sheynauvah.  Piaskun comes into this fight ranked in the top 10 for the first time after a three fight win streak.  5-2-1 overall all in HMMA he is quietly building a reputation as a solid fighter in the division and a demanding outing for anyone who faces him.  After winning his first fight in HMMA “The Phenom” has found himself getting high caliber opponents, but losing three straight put him in a position where he needs a win desperately.  Sheynauvah is a really skilled, and exciting fighter that I have grown to love watch fight.  You don’t want to look away when watching him fight because you know special could happen.

Rudy:  Weston you are right about that Sheynauvah has special special power having won 12 of his 13 fights by (T)KO.  In particular his weapon of choice has been head kicks that have sent his opponents crashing to the mat and going to the hospital.  His style is very exciting and I sit on the edge of my seat every time he fights.  Piaskun is another fighter who is exciting to watch he can hold his own standing in most fights but he is a wrestler first, his wrestling is what has earned him many of his wins by putting his opposition on their backs and chipping away with GNP until they wilt to strikes.   Who takes it; the striker or the grappler?

Prediction:  I think I may take the striker to get back on track here, Sheynauvah by TKO

Kingston Bartholemeaux (22-11)  v  Wesley "The Knight"  Templar (13-5)

Weston:  The next fight a light-heavyweight fight between two fighters who have been in the top ten and want to get back.  Kingston is an impressive 6-3 overall in HMMA and is on a two fight win streak,  a win against Templar and I think he may find himself in the top 10 again.  This is a fighter who once took the former LHW champion who held the title for a year to a split decision loss.  The ability to win big fights is there but is the belief in himself?  Wesley Templar came to HMMA with huge expectations many including myself touted him as the future champion, but after going 0-2 to start his HMMA career many are starting to wonder?  What happened to the man many thought was destined for greatness?   Templar still has the skill, to be one of the divisions top fighters and to his credit the two losses I am talking about were to the 2nd and 3rd ranked fighters in the division, I for one think he can rebound and still be a top 5 fighter in the division, this fight will tell us a lot about him.

Rudy:  These two fighter both have world class boxing and wrestling,  but the overall standup game is better for Kingston, and the overall ground game is better for “The Knight”  These two men have both won the majority of their fights by (T)KO, it will be interesting to see is “The Knight” can get this fight to the ground and work to submit or GNP Kingston.  I don’t think Bartholemeaux will try getting this fight to the ground because Templar’s BJJ is better then his so I expect him to keep it standing.

Prediction:  I think “The Knight” may take this won by decision.

Chris "The Cobra" Kendall  (18-5) v  Raul Portugis (17-7)

Weston:  The next fight will feature a contest against two welterweights who could be contenders in the division, in fact Chris Kendall once fought for the vacant HMMA welterweight title and would love to get back on track and once again fight for the title.  After splitting losses in HMMA the first step would be winning two straight, and a good start is beating  Raul Portugis in his HMMA debut.  Portugis has eventual title ambitions of his own.  He draws solid opposition in his first fight and could make a statement with a big win.

Rudy:  Little is known about the debuting Raul Portugis as to where he stands in the WW division, but if history shows us anything its that he knows how to win fights as a former champion elsewhere.  He has a very good overall game and has won most of his fights by decision and (t)KO.   I cant say I know what to expect out of Raul, but im sure Kendall has seen the tape and does.  Kendall also has a very good overall game this could be a great all around MMA fight with two guys trying to find the weakness in the others game.

Prediction:  Kendall by decision.

#6 Begbie Franco (14-7)  v  #9 Mr "The Gay"  Gray (20-11-2)

Weston:  The first fight on the main card is a middleweight clash.  Two of the divisions best fighters will go at it here looking to improve their standing in the division.  For Franco an opportunity to get another win streak going and a possible rematch with the champion, he has made everyone aware he plans and dreams of wearing the middleweight title around his waist.  With two straight losses one might think Franco is ranked to high but those two losses came to the champion in a title fight and the  current #1 contender the only two men to beat him since joining HMMA.  He has also proven to be one of the top fighters in the division by beating two former champions and one HoFer.  Will Begbie be able to get back on track and make another run towards the title, or will Mr Gray springboard himself to the top at the expense of Fanco?  “The Gay”  comes into this fight on a 3 fight win streak after losing his first fight in HMMA he rebounded and has now found himself in a slow rise to the 9th ranked spot in the division.  With a win here Gray could move up higher on the standings and find himself on the verge of title contention.

Rudy:   Its hard to find a fight where the matchup is as even as these two are, both guys are very well rounded, and both could beat the other in all areas of MMA.  Franco has the higher finishing percentage, and has shown some good power in his strikes.  Gray has shown a scrappy attitude that keeps him in fights until the bitter end.   Its my belief that if Begbie is going to win its going to be standing, an if Gray wins it will be on the ground.

Prediction:  I think Franco wins by late TKO.
