Alien Invasion 8 Review

Event Review: Alien Invasion 8
What used to be Feral Combat
2013-05-25, St Petersburg, Hard Knocks - St Petersburg
Attendance:3,000, Event Rating:217
Author:Ernie White

Alien Invasion 8 was a record setting event for Feral Combat, and the ultra-stacked card delivered. It received a stellar rating of 217.05, the highest in the organization’s history. All 3,000 seats were filled, drawing in a $390,000 gate. The fights were terrific, and we saw two titles change hands. Here to bring you back into the action is yours truly, Ernie White.

The main card opened up with a bang, as heavyweights Sune Mangs and Fred Burton met for the second time. Burton used crisp counter striking to take home “Knockout Of The Night” in their first bout, but that’s not how it went this time. Mangs was much more accurate with his striking, landing big punches early. The end came just outside of the first minute, with Mangs flooring Burton to earn himself “Knockout Of The Night”.

Result: Sune Mangs def. Fred Burton via KO (Punch) at 1:18 of round 1.

Middleweights Ultimate Damage and Tommy Thompson kept the action going, with Damage coming away with the win. A clear edge in the grappling department went to Damage, and it clearly was the focus of his gameplan. However, getting Thompson down wasn’t the easiest task in the world, nor was keeping him down. Thompson managed to defend 13 of 17 takedown attempts, and even landed a sweep of his own at one point, but Damage’s relentless attack eventually broke him down, as he was mounted midway through the second and finished off with punches.

Result: Ultimate Damage def. Tommy Thompson via TKO (Strikes) at 4:37 of round 2.

Craig Shilo had his momentum ground to a halt by Gideon Abieezer’s grappling assault in a pivotal middleweight contest. Shilo was coming off the heels of 5 straight knockouts, but he was unable to get his strikes off against an ADCC champion in Abiezzer. The black belt showed his class over the course of 3 rounds, scoring a takedown and full mount in each round. He was unable to finish, but he was content to maintain the top position and control the fight.

Result: Gideon Abieezer def. Craig Shilo via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

The co-main event saw the heavyweight title go on the line, as champion Gary Goodridge met top contender Ziel Griever. Goodridge knew coming into this fight that he had to get it to the mat, and he did, scoring 8 takedowns over the course of 5 rounds. However, he did not remain active enough from the top position, and the ref stood them up 4 times. Griever was actively looking to improve his position from the bottom, scoring multiple sweeps, and when they were on the feet, he clearly showed his class. Griever outlanded the champ 30-4 on the feet, and he took home every round on the judges’ scorecards, as well as a shiny new belt.

Result: Ziel Griever def. Gary Goodridge via unanimous decision (50-45 x3) and is the new FC heavyweight champion.

The main event featured a middleweight title fight in which neither man was willing to give an inch, leading to the “Fight Of The Night” between reigning champ Thomas Fu and Hironobu Uematsu. Neither fighter was interested in going to the ground, instead engaging in a hotly contested war on the feet. Fu moved forward with a kick centric attack, while Uematsu was more focused on staying at boxing range. The first two rounds were extremely narrow, and it went into the third round potentially one-a-piece. Uematsu instigated a clinch early in the round. They engaged in dirty boxing, with Uematsu getting the better of it. A short punch buckled Fu, but he could not take advantage of it. Fu seemed to recover well, eventually breaking the clinch and going back to striking range. But as the round headed into the final minute, Uematsu cranked his opponent with a vicious head kick, and the ref stopped the fight. Ladies and gentleman, we have a new champion.

Result: Hironobu Uematsu def. Thomas Fu via TKO (Head Kick) at 4:06 of round 3 and is the new FC middleweight champion.

Also on the card:

Winke Tygesen def. Hassan Willidirm via submission (Triangle Choke) at 0:32 of round 1.

Renato Gracie def. Titus Titan via submission (Americana) at 0:55 of round 1.

Cory Trevor def. Jack Clayton via TKO (Strikes) at 2:59 of round 1.

Timmeh Larson def. Mark Mayhem via TKO (Punches) at 0:10 of round 2.
