The MMA Today - Alex Dragon

Fighter profile of Alex Dragon by Jack LaBear

Hello all you MMA fans out there, I'm Phil Conners and I'm here to bring you another episode of "The MMA Today Show". This is where we bring you some of the best fighters in Los Angeles and explore what they are all about. This week, we have Alex Dragon here with us. Alex will be fighting for the bantamweight title this coming Saturday in a rematch against Kari Parisyen. Their first bout ended in a split decision so this should be a very close fight. Let's here it for the "firebreathing" Alex Dragon.

[Alex enters the set smiling and waving to the audience]

Phil: Welcome to the show Alex.

Alex: Thanks, happy to be here.

Phil: I saw your fight last Friday and I must say, impressive win. Congratulations. Why don't you tell us a little about yourself, what do you like to do when your not bashing someones head in?

Alex: Thanks, as for what I do when I'm not fighting, alot of people already know I'm a 3 time National Potato Chucking Champion so when I'm not fighting or in the gym you can usually catch me at my potato chucking range at my house practicing for this year's competition.

Phil: Potato chucking, huh [chuckles] That sounds really cool. So tell us about potato chucking, is it just who can throw it the farthest? Or do you have to throw with accuracy? How does that work?

Alex: It all depends on what kind of competition you join, some are power, some are accuracy and some require you to use both.

Phil: Three time champion, that's awesome. So have you won in both types, or do you specialize in one or the other? Also, is there any money in it or do you just get a ribbon or something?

Alex: Well I have won both types, you kind of have to if you compete at a national level, and you get ribbons and prize money, I myself have been able to make a good lump of cash from it.

Phil: Now I know who to call if I need to borrow money [chuckles]. Just kidding, but WOW, first a national champ at tossing spuds and now your fighting for a championship in MMA, how did you end up getting into MMA in the first place?

Alex: Well I've been boxing since I was 15, my dad use to own his own boxing gym and use to teach me and my bros a few things, I was going to box for a living but a friend of mine got me to pick up some Jui Jitsu and got me in his dojo, then he introduced me to some MMA promoters and well here I am.

Phil: So your dad owned a gym. I bet your brothers and father are excited about your success in MMA, are any of them going to be in LA to see your fight?

Alex: Yep, my older brother is always telling me how to improve my boxing, If I screw up anything technique wise with my boxing in a fight he gives me an ear full. They come to all of my fights and are always in the front row. They are definitely coming to my title fight they live in LA. I'm from there actually but I train in Rio because I feel training over there is better for me.

Phil: Yeah it's always nice to have your own personal cheering section [chuckles.] I'm just curious though, are any of your brothers potato chuckers? Cause they could always chuck potatos at the judges if needed. [chuckles]

Alex: No, [chuckles] I'm afraid I'm the only potato chucker in the family.

Phil: I want to talk about your upcoming title shot. Now you've faced off against Parisyen before and ended up losing by a split decision, does it make it harder to accept a loss when it isn't a clear loss? I mean one judge actually said you won the fight.

Alex: A loss is tough for me to swallow whether it's close or not, I'm not stressing over our last fight though, I'm more focused on this fight.

Phil: See folks, now that shows class, to be able to take a loss like that and not let it bother you. I know of it were me, I'd have followed the judges home and did some potato chucking [chuckles]. Just kidding, but seriously Alex, what do you think went wrong against Parisyen last time?

Alex: Well everyone keeps telling me I was too apprehensive off my back and after watching the fight over I tend to agree.

Phil: We're low on time but real quick, if you win the title who do you think would be your biggest chalenge besides Parisyen?

Alex: I'm not sure, there are quite a few tough guys in my division. I would probably have to say James Black.

Phil: Black is a tough opponent for anyone that's for sure. Well Alex that about does it for our time, it has been great having you on the show. As is custom, the last 30 seconds are all yours, anything you want to say to anyone out there? Anything goes.

Alex: Thanks for having me and I just want to give a shout out to my alliance TBD we are destined to take over the world and me winning this title is going to be one step toward making that dream a reality.

Phil: There you have it folks, put your hands together for the spud tossing, "firebreathing" Alex Dragon. Don't forget to join us here next week, same time, same place when we will be visiting with Ouji Eiichi, Ouji is UPF LA's middleweight champion and maybe one of the most popular fighters fighting in the UPF LA. Maybe having him on the show will help our ratings [chuckles]. Until next time, this is Phil Conners saying "Don't Forget, Don't submit"....So long.
