FC-XX: Battle Of Camden Review

Event Review: FC-XX: Battle of Camden
What used to be Feral Combat
2013-07-13, London, Camden Conference Centre
Attendance:7,000, Event Rating:260
Author:Ernie White

Feral Combat smashed all of their event records with a huge event in FC-XX: Battle of Camden. They sold out the Camden Conference Centre and achieved their highest rated event to date. This is Ernie White, taking you back into the action.

The card opened up with a middleweight bout between Dc Gable and Will Dickinson. Dickinson knew he was outmatched on the feet and looked to take the fight to the ground early. He tried to use kicks to set it up, but Gable was able to avoid all of them, and came back with stiff counters. A cut opened up on Dickinson just over a minute in, and it was the beginning of the end.  A big right hand from Gable put him down, but he managed to spring right back up. However, Gable gave him no time to recover, and landed another big right and a follow-up punch on the ground that forced a stoppage. Gable was awarded a $10,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

Result: Dc Gable def. Will Dickinson via KO (Punch) at 2:07 of round 1.

Another middleweight contest followed up that bout, this one between Manny Mayweather and Frederick Barbarossa. Mayweather made it clear from the start that he did not want to strike with Barbarossa, shooting for takedowns repeatedly from the first bell. He finally managed to land one into side control just over a minute in, and looked to land ground and pound. However, Barbarossa kept his cool, and managed to sweep and then stand up. After fending off a few more telegraphed takedown attempts, Barbarossa hurt Mayweather with a left hook, and pummeled him into the ground until he tapped to strikes.

Result: Frederick Barbarossa def. Manny Mayweather via Submission (Strikes) at 3:55 of round 1.

Gary Goodridge and Frank Schrank met in a re-match in the co-main event, with a score to settle. Their first fight went all three rounds, and the judges declared it a draw. This match went the distance as well, but the action only favoured one man. Schrank did a good job fending off the takedown attempts of Goodridge, stopping 12 of 16. However, when he did get taken down, he was unable to get back to his feet, making that the story of the fight. Goodridge knew he was out gunned on the feet, so he pushed the fight to the mat, landing takedowns in every round, and smothering his opponent with ground and pound. After six rounds between these two, we finally had a clear cut victor, and that was Gary Goodridge.

Result: Gary Goodridge def. Frank Schrank via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

The main event saw Edgar Hoover easily defend his title in the trilogy match against Montgomery Nagendra. The champ scored a takedown right off the bat and landed in side control. From there he worked some short strikes and elbows, all while keeping a heavy base so that Nagendra couldn’t escape. After a failed kimura attempt, Hoover gave up on the side control and went to full mount. From there, he quickly opened up a cut on Nagendra, and continued chipping away with strikes. A huge punch clearly got to Nagendra, and the blood started pouring into his eye. Nagendra tried to hold on to Hoover’s waist, but the punches kept coming in until the ref had seen enough. Another win for the dominant champ.

Result: Edgar Hoover def. Montgomery Nagendra via TKO (Strikes) at 1:55 of round 1.

One fight on the preliminary card saw $30,000 in bonuses handed out, as Wilsooooon James Da Silva and Gustavo Fring engaged in a wildly entertaining grappling match that ended with the night’s best submission. Only a few strikes where even thrown in this match, as the two BJJ brown belts were too busy trading submission attempts back and forth to hit each other. Da Silva managed to score the first takedown, but Fring immediately started working for submissions. Da Silva managed to eventually pass the guard to work submissions of his own, but Fring got right back to guard and started attacking back. A pass into half guard saw Da Silva get more serious submission attempts, but Fring managed to steal the round by slipping out and taking Da Silva’s back. The second round started with Fring landing a takedown into side control, but was overzealous with his submission attacks, and Da Silva got to half guard. From there, he latched onto a guillotine, and managed to get back to full guard. He squeezed the hold until Fring went limp, and earned the Submission of the Night. The two men also got Fight of the Night.
