AD144: Highway to Belle preview

Event Preview: AD144: Highway to Belle
Aggressive Damage
2013-07-24, Montreal, Belle Centre
Author:Cause McDubree

As your fine servants at Aggressive Damage put the final touches on the most critical Event in our org’s relatively illustrious history, the anticipation’s building like a kid with the latest Lego set. As the name alludes, this will be the lil’ guys first shot at the big show, at least here in Montreal, as the rabid Nation takes over the Belle Center with it’s 20k plus seating capacity. Befitting a card of such magnitude, we’ve called forth many of our most popular gladiators to pit their significant skills against one another, determining Titles, Title-shots and in the case of the undercard, who keeps climbing the ladder towards one.

The word from the official bookie, A Good Cause is that this was the most difficult Event to handicap since they started repping the org steadily back at AD40 or so. Not one combatant was seen as a clear enough favourite to bump his odds as high as 2-1 and there’s currently a total of three pick ‘ems plus a couple others that might as well be. What that means to the fans and those involved is as memorable a night of fights as this city’s ever seen and we’re beaming proud to bring it to you.

Before we provide our take on the bombastic action in store, I just wanted to let all our managers know how much the 98% satisfaction rating the org’s received means to myself and JL. Mainly because we’ve never once encouraged anyone to visit the page and rate us, as I’ve seen plenty of other owners do in the past. This overwhelming vote of confidence was achieved purely of your own volition and for that, we are very grateful; since we try real hard to provide everyone with an active, competitive venue you can count on. With the heartfelt thanks out of the way, let’s get on to the fights…

SHW Title: Hades Hug (+110) vs. Harold Howard (-135), when it comes to dynamically talented, hefty strikers, we’re going to see two of the deadliest on the planet climb back in the cage to determine who\s the cock of the walk in La Belle Province. The early line has Howard listed as a slight favourite, due mainly to his stellar percentage of KO victories but Hug is no slouch in that department either, as HH found out the hard way in their first meeting. You can bet the farm the judges can take a break for this one, folks; like all electric slugfests, it’s gonna come down to who lands the first big shot., cause lord knows their respective history’s have shown we’re going to see some ferocious follow up. Don’t know about you, pawdna, but I’m more pumped for this one than Macho Man Savage on Nandralone.

WW Title: Felix Basilan (-122) vs. Gideon Gabriel (Even), thanks to an 11-1 record in his last 12 fights for us, Felix Basilan had catapulted his way up to the #28 spot in the P4P rankings and successfully defended his Title three times since taking it back from Hutch Gibson. He’s facing a stern test in Gabriel, who got off to a slow start with AD before reeling off six straight wins to earn his place in the spotlight. Basilan’s developed into an unsolvable riddle against strikers and grapplers but he’ll need to bring his A game in against the ground demon, Gabriel. Will the challenger hit a high percentage of his takedown attempts? - the answer will likely determine your winner.

LHW Title: Vic Bauer vs. Templeton Peck (Pick ‘em), as the odds would suggest, we’ve got another coin flip on our hands with a belt on the line. The Champion, Bauer’s on a six fight win streak and Peck’s won his last ten so it’s safe to say this fight features two of the most talented 205’ers in Montreal. We’ll echo the sentiments of the previous fight in wondering how often the Champ will be able to take the Faceman down; if it’s not often, his chances for victory get slimmer by the minute against the K1 level striking that Peck brings to the dance. Bauer is slick and powerful on the mat, however and Templeton will be cursing himself for not stuffing that last one after Vic moves effortlessly into side control and starts ringing his bell.

FW Title: Braden Turk vs. Diego Sanchez (Pick ‘em), it’s the Night of the Recurring Theme, with the new poster boy for Ground n’ Pound, Braden Turk, putting his strap on the line for the first time against renowned slugger and former Champ, Nightmare Sanchez. Should the Infidel find little success getting Diego down and keeping him there, it\s only a matter of time before Sanchez lands a bomb and changes the complexion of the fight. Although both are rated top 30 in their weight class worldwide, the harder hitting challenger should be a slight favourite going in. However as owner of the bookie and manager of Turk, I always try to dissuade bettors from putting money on my fighters, so please be like Dora and go with Diego.

LHW Top Contender: Piotr Nawrocki (-122) vs. Con Waterson (Even), some might say; wait, isn’t Noah Puckerman top dog for next? and the answer is akin to going down on your 72 year old girlfriend, that depends. Should Peck keep his monumental run alive, then Puckerman’s let it be known he has no interest in fighting his stablemate. If Bauer hangs onto his belt, than we can rest assured there will be some consensus forming around former long time Champ, Puck as the right choice for #1 contender status. That’s unless we see a spectacular performance in this intriguing bout between these battle tested warriors. These guys have been on tears with minor setbacks and both should remain top contenders for the foreseeable future, win or lose. Nawrocki and his superior ground game get a rude welcome to AD against recent title contender, Waterson, who’s a dangerous, motivated punching machine out to show the brass he’s ready to wrest the belt from whoever‘s holding it. What makes this fight more interesting than the ones proceeding it is that the proud Pole has flashed improved striking skills in the latter stages of his already lengthy career and may surprise Waterson with his ability to slip & rip.

Undercard

HW’s Anaconda Anaconda vs. Buck Blaze (Pick ‘em): huge Semi-Final bout of our Heavyweight Rocky Tournament, as AD Nation holds it’s collective breath on whether Hall of Famer, AA’s got enough magic in the tank for one last run at glory. He KO’d Blaze in a Title defence at AD122 but that was then and he hasn’t shown that consistently devastating form since while Buck seems to have improved.

HW’s Lan Mandragoran (+140) vs. Silas Storm (-173), the other half of our Rocky Tourney features rising star Mandragoran getting a second chance to best Thunder Storm. Has Lan made enough strides in training since his TKO loss to turn the tide this time? Storm took him down too easily in that fight and if we see more of the same on the 24th, expect the same result.

HW’s Fatu Tua (+119) vs. Cody Grant (-146): one of these guys is going to move up in line for a chance at stardom in our stacked division while the other’s gonna be faced with a much steeper climb to regain their momentum and with it, relevance. As a former manager of Grant, I\m privy to his skill set and believe it will play well against Tua as long as he sticks to his strengths.

LHW's Eddie Brock (-153) vs. Mason Archer (+124): props to Brock for taking this fight against a low hype, veteran scrapper who offers more risk than reward. Archer’s earned plenty of accolades through his 38-11 career but a recent slide has held him back from the bigger fights. That all changed when Eddie Venom said yes, thereby opening the door for the The Predator’s return to former glory.

FW's Ballard Magnar (-181) vs. Davi Alves (+146): the prodigal son, Magnar has returned to take on former top contender Alves, who’s desperately trying to gain some traction towards a Title shot before Father Time says no way. A big finish from either of these fighters will help immensely in the recognition department and with the depth of talent at 145, they’re going to need it.

After all that, the only thing left to say is take the next step in the AD experience and make your way over to A Good Cause to steal my money. Odds are now live on all 10 bouts for what’s certain to be recognized as one of the top Events of the year in Montreal, if not the world. Last thought for now comes from the “been meaning to mention” file; for any AD fighter who finds they’ve slipped through the cracks and found themselves in FA status, please realize I’m especially swamped by r/l in summer, betweeb taking the family camping, two girls playing soccer, etc. so there will be times when all the I’s don’t get dotted. Should it happen to you, please send a p.m my way and we’ll straighten out that mishap, asap.

It’s been great to be back in the writer’s chair, hope you all enjoyed the ride and will continue to support one of the few top 20 orgs that have been built from within by our dedicated managers.
