It all started one day with a little light internet browsing that resulted in the discovery of fantastic website called MMATYCOON. I thought, “hey why not” and I joined April 15th 2010. Now I haven’t been here from the beginning but going on two years, I think, makes me a veteran. Nevertheless, Soon after reading the wiki’s and getting a vague idea of org ownership, I decided to buy VIP and open my very own fight org in Montreal.
The org opened in late April and the first event took place in May. I successfully managed to round up a decent sized roster with the 48k loan I took out. (I don’t know why I didn’t take the full 50). Either way, the org was on its way. I didn’t turn a profit until my 2nd event but from there it was smooth sailing. I paid back the loan in full after only having to pay roughly $800 in interest which I thought was really good. By the 10th event some of the early fighters left, a lot of new fighters joined, and I had a solid stable of fighters. Once I made myself into the Top 10 in Montreal, I decided to try my hand at the bigger arenas. I briefly made it into 3rd position in Montreal which was an honour seeing my org 2 spots below the iconic CFC (Congrats on the 3rd anniversary). The org was doing well in its first year and was consistently around the 5th (+/-) position in Montreal. However, this occurred during a relatively good boom in the number of managers involved with the website in general. With more active managers there were more active fighters and therefore there was more opportunity for success.
Regardless, the first year was very lucrative and successful. I offered $1,000 OTN awards when they first came out but soon after raised them and gave even more after special events. I even remember that on Canada Day I gave every single active fighter in the org a bonus. It wasn’t a lot but it took a fair amount of time to complete and the managers seemed to appreciate it. During the beginning of the first year I had a manager kindly make me the org logo and I enlisted some help to create org thumbnails and an amazing looking title belt. I wanted to make the org something that the managers involved would appreciate. I also tried my best to make sure everyone’s fighter could afford $600/week training and decent supplements. I think all of these efforts helped the orgs success. However it wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops moving forward.
Stay tuned for Part II
