ITFL Review – Week 10 Part 1

International Team Fighting League concluded its regular season Sunday July 21, 2013 live from the Camden Conference Center. This event was sure to be an exciting week as both the team and individual competitions were both wide open. Team Syndicate and Team Kaiser are separated by only a half point for the group lead. Team Aces and Team TFP come into the week trailing Team Misfits by 2 points for the last spot in the team playoffs, and the individual tournament has 5 guys who could grab the last spot in the playoffs if the cards fall their way. Let’s take a look out how the action went down.

Sir Jecht (13-10) vs. Jax Teller (14-8)

The first fight on the card is between Team Syndicate and Team Misfits as elite wrestler Sir Jecht takes on kick-boxing specialist Jax Teller. The first round got underway and Jecht immediately got the fight to the ground at the opening bell. Teller did a nice job controlling his opponent and getting the fight stood up. Both fighters were pushing forward trying to dictate the pace and Jecht continued to try to get this fight to the ground and he succeeded landing another takedown into guard half-way through the round. Teller again did a nice job controlling his opponent and got the fight stood back up. The two fighters traded shots back and forth on the feet until Jax Teller unleashed the mother of all head kicks and ended the fight.

I.P. Daily (11-11) vs. Jarod Batchelor (12-7-1)

The Replacements team isn’t eligible for the team playoff but several of their fighters are in contention to make the individual tournament, and once of those fighters is Jarod Batchelor as he takes on I.P. Daily who will be looking for the upset in hopes to get his team into the team playoff. The first round got underway and both fighters came out aggressive in an attempt to dictate the pace of this fight. Daily was doing a real nice job early in the round using his reach to his advantage and landing a lot of single shots to the head of his opponent. The two fighters were really going back and forth but half-way through the round Daily landed a big head kick that sent Batchelor tumbling to the canvas and while Jarod was still on wobbly legs, I.P. Daily dropped him with a big left hand and after a few follow up strikes the referee was forced to jump in and save his opponent. Daily gets the Aces off to a good start with the upset victory.

Pete Damato (22-20) vs. Boy Bubby (17-5-1)

Team Reaper has already secured the first place seed in the team tournament so their fighters will be fighting for seed in the individual tournament this week. Team HB is fighting for respect and they send their legend into the cage first to take on Reaper’s mouth-piece Boy Bubby. Damato came out a little wild in the early part of the round and ate a few counter strikes from Bubby who was finding a lot of success with strikes early in the fight. Damato landed a nice right hand through his opponent’s guard between the two and three minute mark that really had Bubby on queer-street for a moment. Pete tried to follow up that shot with a poor cross that missed and finished the round on his back because of it. Boy Bubby came out and took the fight into the clinch in the 2nd round before getting a body lock takedown into guard. Bubby worked a good offensive ground game and again finished the round on top. Entering the last round it was clear that Damato was behind on the score-cards and would need a finish to win the fight. That wouldn’t come to be as Bubby out-stuck his opponent for most of the round before again getting this fight to the ground and he finished the fight on top and secured the win for his team.

Bubby def. Damato by 30-27 Unanimous Decision

Greco Roman (13-14) vs. Thomas Billington (30-14-2)

Up next is another fight between Team Reaper and Team Hells Balls as elite wrestling black belt Greco Roman takes on another elite wrestling black belt in Thomas Billington. The first round got under-way and Billington came out finding a lot of success with his strikes. A jab by Billington seemed to really hurt Greco Roman and Thomas followed it up with a nice leg kick and a body shot that really had Roman breathing hard. Billington then followed up with the oldest trick in the book by looking low and throwing a devastating high kick that knocked Roman out cold.

Next on the card would’ve been Geralt of Ravia vs. Biff Biffman but Biffman failed to make it to the right location on time giving Geralt the win and the 3 points.

Michael Rodalgo (24-15) vs. Jeremy Voda (15-9)

Michael Rodalgo could secure a playoff spot with a win in this fight but a loss could find him on the outside looking in. Jeremy Voda has already secured a spot in the individual tournament but a win here could get him a better seed and possibly help his team make the playoffs as well. Voda came out really looking to get this fight to the ground with a couple takedown attempts right out of the gate but they were a little too telegraphed and Rodalgo countered with a nice takedown into half-guard. Rodalgo immediately passed Voda’s guard and got the mount position and pounded on his opponent with heavy strikes for over 4 minutes from that position. Jeremy Voda came out spamming takedown attempts again in the 2nd round and eventually landed one just before 2 minutes passed in the round. Michael Rodalgo showed a really active guard though throwing up plenty of submission attempts and forcing Voda to work, but the round ended with Voda on top. Round 3 got under-way with an immediate takedown into guard by Voda but he never mounted a lot of offense and the referee was forced to stand the fight up around half-way through the round. Voda again landed a takedown but it was Rodalgo who was being active from his back until again the referee was forced to stand the fight up and the two traded shots on the feet until the round came to an end. It was a very close fight as both fighters awaited the judge’s score-cards.

Rodalgo def. Voda by Majority decision

Viktor Kafka (22-13-1) vs. Karl Denke (30-9-1)

Up next is our first match between Team TFP and Team Kaiser as both teams have a lot on the line with Team TFP trying to make it into the playoffs while Kaiser is looking to take over the group lead. Karl Denke could also make the individual tournament with a victory here today while unfortunately Kafka finds himself just on the outside of the playoff picture. The first round got under-way and Kafka came out the aggressor landing a few strikes right out of the gate but a predictable body shot saw him countered with a nice takedown into guard by Denke. Kafka was doing a nice job from bottom and then landed a beautiful sweep into full mount. Denke kept his composure however and scrambled back to half-guard before again giving up the mount to his opponent. Denke eventually got back to a better position and forced the referee to stand up the fight. The two fighters traded strikes for the rest of the round with the most significant moment being a nice jab by Denke that opened up a cut on Kafka. Viktor came out aggressive again in round 2, and Denke again landed a counter takedown but this time into side-control. Kafka eventually got back to full guard and even threw up a triangle attempt from his back but the referee eventually stood the fight back up and the two fighters went back and forth on the feet for the rest of the round. We entered the 3rd round with Denke up 2 rounds to zip and barring a finish he’d be the victor in this fight. These two warriors traded strikes for the majority of the round with Denke landing a counter takedown into half-guard right before the end of the round and we’d see the judges in this one.

Denke def. Kafka by 30-27 Unanimous Decision

Aran Schmeck (10-9) vs. Dragon Slayer (13-3)

Our co-main event of the evening saw Team HB’s BJJ red-belt Aran Schmeck take on our individual points leader and knockout specialist Dragon Slayer. Schmeck game out in the first round trying to get this fight to the ground which was a smart move if he was planning on avoiding the knockout. Slayer did a nice job keeping this fight standing and landing heavy shots in the process. Dragon Slayer was finding a lot of success in the round with his leg kicks and head punches and half-way through the round a jab from Slayer found it’s mark and rocked Schmeck. Dragon slayer followed up with a jab and then threw a beautiful left hook that sent Schmeck tumbling to the canvas, after a few punishing shots on the ground the referee jumped in and saved Aran.

Slayer def. Schmeck by 1st round TKO

Dakota Royer (33-15) vs. Sergiy Sklyar (23-5-1)

The main event of our card is a match that’s been agreed upon since very early in the season and it’s exciting that the fight is finally happening as Team Misfits sends Dakota Royer to take on Syndicate’s grappling little man in Sergiy Sklyar. Dakota Royer came out very aggressive in the first round but Sklyar caught him off guard with a nice takedown into half-guard early in the first minute of the round. Sergiy couldn’t seem to land with a lot of his ground and pound from guard and eventually the ref was forced to step in and stand the fight up, but after a missed body shot by Royer, Sklyar countered with another takedown and finished the round on top. Royer did a nice job keeping the fight standing for the beginning half of round 2 stuffing 3 takedown attempts by his opponent but unfortunately he was losing the striking battle so it seemed to be a moot point. After another missed body shot by Royer, his opponent countered with a nice takedown into side-control that seemed to really hurt Royer. Sklyar showed great killer instinct landing a brutal elbow from side-control before advancing to full mount. From there Sergiy unleashed a brutal shot that forced the referee to step in and save Royer.

Sklyar def. Royer by 2nd round TKO
