Event Preview: HMMA 97 Floor Jan v Holiday
HEROIC

Author:

Hello again “Sunshine” Weston Markson here, joined by Rudy “The Box” Knife.  We are here to talk about the fantastic fight card HMMA 97 on Sunday July 28th.  The card is headlined by lightweight action in a highly significant fight.

Rudy:  Yea its most likely a number one contenders fight.  You know the CO-MAIN event could very well turn out to be the same thing. Its going to be a great night of live action on PPV.

MAIN EVENT

#3 Kenny Floor Jan (24-7) v  #2 Doc Holliday (21-10)

Weston:  Finally its time, the wait is over, the main event brings in the debut of highly touted lightweight Doc Holliday.  Holliday is ranked 8th in the entire world for lightweights, and 2nd here in HMMA without a fight yet.  This fight will serve as a test to see if Holliday can hang here in HMMA and it will crown the #1 contender for the lightweight title.  Floor Jan is also a very talented fighter and ranked in the top 20 worldwide for lightweights, he may be a slight underdog going into this fight but he was in his last fight too and he came out on top.  With only one other appearance in the HMMA cage these two fighters could start their HMMA careers with a bang if they win here and go on to capture the championship.

Rudy:  This is one of the most anticipated fights and debuts here in HMMA in a while.  Both of these fighters are very well-rounded, and highly skilled, they both mix it up well using all faucets of MMA.  Neither fighter is very accurate with their strikes but both have power they combine for 23 (T)KO’s, some of those on the ground with vicious GNP.  IF you look at who has the better ground game the edge has to go to Holliday but by the slimmest of margins.  Standing its to close to call this is going to be one of the epic battles in HMMA history, two elite fighters hungry for a chance to become champion.

Prediction: I think Holliday takes a very close decision.

CO-MAIN EVENT

#4 Bowser Stormcrow (13-1) v  #3 "Peltosaaren Teurastaja" Brutaali Keijo  (17-11-1)

Weston: The CO-MAIN EVENT of HMMA 97 is a welterweight showdown between former champion Brutaali Keijo and fast rising prospect Bowser Stormcrow.  We last saw Stormcrow in his HMMA debut against a former 2 time title challenger Sven Dufva.  His KO of Dufva sent the entire division on notice and caught the eye of then champion Brutaali Keijo.  Keijo had to know this fight was coming one day but he had envisioned it being for his championship, but after his last fight against Richard Nixon Keijo’s title was his no longer now he faces the challenge to dispose of the hungry up and comer and possibly earn another chance for the title.

Rudy:  This is the fight I am most looking forward to right here, you got a hungry young gun, and a hungry former champion with the winner most likely being named #1 contender.  There is no secret that Stormcrow wants to keep this fight standing in the past he has never attempted a takedown and uses the clinch rarely expect him to remain at striking distance and try to pick apart the former champion.  Keijo on the other hand will do everything possible to mix up his attacks taking the fight to the clinch, and hopefully he eventually wants to get the fight to the ground where Stormcrow is a bit untested.

Prediction: Im going with an upset here I actually think the young Stormcrow takes this one by TKO.

MAIN CARD

“Lost” Jack Infamous (18-15) v #6 "Timothy Of The Night" Timo Yo (16-8)

Weston:  We all know by now this fight was originally slated for HMMA 94, an issue with Infamous’s weight forced the fight to be postponed until now.  Timo was not happy when his opponent didn’t make weight and im sure he wants to make an example out of him, with Infamous just sitting outside the top 10 in rankings a win here against YO could put him back in the top 10.

Rudy:  This is almost a classic matchup between striker and grappler, but the difference is Infamous is a wrestler and GNP master!  He has 16 wins from his brutal GNP the last place Yo wants to be in this fight is on his back with Infamous on top of him.  I think this will happen at least once in this fight because YO defends only 35% of takedowns from striking range and only 50% from clinch.  Infamous Olympic caliber wrestling lands nearly 40% of his takedown attempts from striking range.  Yo on the other hand is a striker, he attempts nearly 25 head punches per fight and he swings for the fences on all of them landing just under 5 per fight.  This style has earned him 13 wins by (T)KO and the question of which of these two fighters knockout style will prevail.

Prediction:  Timo has been on a roll and I think he continues here.

"Even-" Kiel Flay (10-3)  v  #5 Mr Translucent (17-9)

Weston:  The third fight on the main card is a middleweight fight between former title challenger Mr Translucent, and Kiel Flay.  Both of these fighters come into this fight having won their last fight and looking to build a win streak that could lead them towards the title.

Rudy:  I think we will see a great fight here, im expecting a standup battle that I believe will be decided in the clinch.  These two have shown exemplary work in the clinch landing at high percentages, Flay probably has the better clinch game landing almost every strike at clinch range over 65% of the time.  His short range accuracy could lead him to victory over Translucent, but Translucent is no slouch in the striking department landing over 55% of his total strikes .  He also has the better ground game and although he rarely uses it I think he may give it a whirl this time around.

Prediction:  I think Kiel Flay may pull off the upset by decision.

Anthony Abaddon (26-16) v  #4 George "The Easy Bake" Oven (16-7-2)

Weston:   just a few short weeks ago these two men did battle in the HMMA cage, that fight ended when George Oven(T)KOed Abaddon.  Abaddon being the warrior he is issued an immediate challenge to oven, the sour taste in his mouth led to him calling out the man who just beat him for another shot.  Oven obliged and here we are again.  Coming into this fight Oven is looking like a legit threat to the title.  He is on the best run of his career having won 5 straight, and 7 out of his last 8 with the only loss coming at the hands of a former title challenger.  Will oven continue his streak or will Abaddon avenge the loss?

Rudy:  These two are so evenly matched its really hard to tell who is going to win it.  They both tend to go for power shots in an attempt to KO their opposition but in the process they land a smaller percentage, Oven lands at a higher rate right with right around 50% of his strikes finding its target.  Both of these fighters have KO power Abaddon has 20….yeah 20 career (T)KO wins, and Oven 11.  If I was oven I would use his superior wrestling skills to get this fight to the ground work from there with GNP and submission attempts.

Prediction:  Call me crazy but I think Abaddon takes it this time around.

#8 Aaron "Evolution" Edwards (11-4)  v  Kingston Bartholemeaux (23-12)

Weston:  A little over 6 months ago Aaron Edwards was coming off a successful HMMA debut.  He was on top of the world and ready for another fight, enter Kingston Bartholemeaux at the time Kingston was on a two fight losing streak after a promising start to his HMMA career.  These two met in a three round war that saw Bartholemeaux come out the victor.  Now Edwards gets the chance for revenge having only lost to two fighters in one being Bartholemeaux and the other the current champion Nate Barnes Edwards is ready for some revenge starting with Bartholemeaux and if he has it his way eventually ending with the champion.  Both of these guys are looking to start a winning streak here but only one will…who’s it going to be?

Rudy:  Well last time these two hooked up it was Bartholemeaux’s wrestling that gave Edwards fits.  His ability to ground Edwards at just the right time allowed him to get the close decision.  I am sure Edwards has improved his takedown defense the question is has he improved enough to keep the fight standing and work his kicks and clinch game?  Edwards averages 40 kicks per fight and lands over 50% of them, he also has a great clinch game and in particular his knees in the clinch which land 70% of the time!  This is going to be a great rematch that both fighters are ready and excited for.

Prediction:  I think this time around Edwards gets the TKO.
