Immortals INY - Challenger Series

Event Preview: INY - Challengers II
Immortals New York
2012-03-02, New York, Wild Bob's Bar - New York
Author:

Another installment of the Immortals “INY - Challenger Series” will be played out at Wild Bobs Bar on March 2nd. The card looks to be 10 fights that consist of two welterweight, four middleweight, one heavyweight, and three big nasty heavyweight clashes.

At the welterweight division (155lbs), Weston Remmington  VS  Michael Kijak.  Each fighter is 1-0, each fighter went the distance to win by decision. Remmington earned his win over another 0-0 newbie, while Kijak concreted his win versus a more experienced fighter via QFC.  Remmington is a “superb” at  MT, while Kijak is a “wonderful” boxer.  Both fighters are virtually the same in wrestling and bjj.  This fight will hinge on one single question, “How good is Remmington’s clinch?  Can he draw Kijak in and punish him, or will Remmington make minced-meat of Kijak in the effort?

The other welterweight bout pits Tohino Cerezo VS Corey Smith .  Cerezo brings a 3-3 record with him and carries a 6K history advantage over Smith who is 2-0. Both fighters have shown us “KO of the Night” and “Fight of the Night”.  Cerezo  possesses strong boxing skills and has ended all 3 of his wins with his hands. Smith has wonderful boxing skills, but actually scored a KO via a “knee” despite his useless Muay Thai. Cerezo has never been taken into deep water while Smith has gone the distance once. The white elephant in this fight is the mismatch on the ground as Cerezo has more fight experience, more history, and a purple belt in bjj while Smith is a white belt.  If Tohino can use his experience to get Smith to the ground, it could be lights out for Smith.

Moving onto the Middleweight Division (170Lbs), we start off with Mike Martin VS Ronald Roughcut. Martin is riding high at 3-0, with 3TKO’s all in the QFC. He will be giving up 12K in experience and history to a 2-2 Ronald Roughcut.    Martin’s power rest with the threat of Ground and Pound, while Roughcut will invite Martin to clinch OR to the canvas.  On top or on bottom, Rougcut will be at home and just waiting for Martin to make a mistake as he hold s a brown belt in bjj over Martin’s blue belt.  Either way I look for this one to end ugly and abruptly on the mat.

Kallie Schwensen brings his 1-0 record in against newbie Will Williams 0-0.  Schwensen  holds about  4K of a history and experience advantage over Williams along with a strong ground and pound threat.  Schwensen’s only win is against a 1-2 fighter Lucas Pereira Jr who was / is  luke-warm at best.   Schwensen will have to test his wrestling skills and his chin against Williams’s competent boxing skills.  If Schwensen can manage to take down Williams without absorbing too much damage, the odds favor Schwensen despite his horrid appearance. However, a fly in the ointment may be Schengen’s lack of attention to his training as his energy is miserably low 8 days prior to the fight.

John Monroe 1-0 faces newbie KC Storm 0-0. Monroe carries about 6K of history and experience on Storm, as well as getting his single win over a much more experienced fighter / doormat in 1-10 Grant  Crouch. The Grant fight was a 3 rd stand-up event with descent boxing and not much else.  Monroe needs to stick with stand up as KC Storm holds a blue belt over Monroe’s white belt.  The dark horse here may be Storm’s MT. If this newbie has juiced his kicks and learned how to clinch, this may be a 1 round show! In order to do any damage, newbie manager Kurt Edge is going to have to manage Storms training a little better and make sure his energy is where it should be come fight time.  To date, it’s going to be a race to make that happen.

The last of the middleweights gives us Colt Plum 1-2 VS Rocky Balboa 1-2. I know what you’re thinking…. “Really?  Rocky F’ing Balboa”???  Hey, I’m just the messenger!!  The fighters are both approx. 159K fighters.  Balboa, true to his legendary yet uncreative counterpart in the movies, knocked out Tom Sato, a superb boxer but was sub’ed the next fight by of all people a fighter named Ghandi!!! Balboa has yet to fight anyone with fair to respectable MY skills. This is a tough one to call, it just depends on what Balboa shows up to fight? I may be shorting Colt Plum in this, but c’mon dude, you are fighting a guy named Rocky Balboa, what do you expect?  If Plum can clinch without going down to the mat, he has a decent chance of  making “The Stallion” a gelding.

The one single heavyweight bout touts Johnny Jones 1-0  VS  1-0  Igor Lesniewski  (who we will just call Igor cuz his last name is too friggin long and hard to type). Both fighters collected their wins via QFC bouts. These fighters are fairly even matched, both 170Kish, but the sliders give it to Johnny Jones via over-matched  Muay Thai. Myself, I’m not so sure? Igor submitted Scott Ian who was built much like Jones and probably by all rights should have won that fight. However, Igor (self managed???) has let his energy dwindle dangerously low a week before the fight? I have serious doubts if this kid can get the juice back to where it needs to be before fight-time.

O.K. let’s bring on the big boys!!! In the Super Heavyweight Division( 265lbs plus), Jakub Soltys 1-0 VS David Hayrapetyan 0-0.  Soltys nabbed his win in a decision over predominant boxer Joseph Daniel.  This fight will be a fight between disciplines, wrestler versus MT. Soltys is a strong wrestler with a blue belt in bjj, and Hayrapetyan is proficient in MT and has a purple belt in bjj. The fight will no doubt go to the mat, maybe for a deciusion, but either way Hayrapetyan has to grab Soltys,  control the arms while on the ground, or it could be a long, painful night for the Russki!

Bobby Corozzo 0-0 will face another 0-0 newbie, Bruno Miles.  Both fighters are around 170K and are managed by fairly new managers to MMA Tycoon.  Corozzo has respectable MT but if he can’t keep the fight standing up, Miles has a definite ground and pound advantage in the form of mediocre boxing and super wrestling skills. Should Miles manage to take it to the mat, Miles will have to end it quickly because he’s a tad out-classed in bjj by a belt.  Again, Miles manager Kurt Edge is training his athletes to the extreme and leaving questions about his fighters energy come fight time.

In what could be the most lopsided fight of the night, Dante Rua (0-1) faces off against newb Oruku Saki 0-0.  Saki is giving up almost 9K in experience and history.   However, Saki’s superb boxing skills compared to Dante’s less impressive boxing skills could produce the “upset of the night”? Dante’s last fight puts his chin into question as he was knocked out in the 1st rd by lesser boxer Devin Styles. Dante’s hope looks to be getting Saki to the mat any way he can and keeping him there where his purple belt in bjj should do all the talking.   We’ll see how much attention manager Joe White has given to Dante’s takedown ability.

Let me know what YOU think!
