Welcome to the Liberty Dome, New York, where SPNY brings you midweek fight night headline by the Welterweight Title rematch between Toni Atomi and John Kyle Romo.

Main Event: Welterweight Title

Toni Atomi 19-5-1 (4-0-1 SPNY) vs John Kyle Romo 24-8 (6-1 SPNY)

The title fight between these two at earned fight of the night honours with Atomi claiming Kyle Romo’s Welterweight Title with a stunning knockout late in the 5th round.  Atomi is one of SPNY’s top grapplers and a BJJ black belt but also has very good stand up skills to back his submission abilities up.  Interestingly his TKO of Kyle Romo in the first match up between these two was just has 2nd KO victory in his 24 fights up until that point.

Kyle Romo is a dominant striker and has very sound defensive technique on the ground; he has only been submitted once in 32 fights.  In the first title fight between these two at SPNY 102, he managed to keep the 3rd and 4th rounds standing for long periods and looked to be turning the judges to his favour before being knocked out in the 5th.  Again tonight if he can keep the fight on the feet his crisp and powerful striking should see him get the better of the fight.

The rematch will hopefully bring the same as the original, with Kyle Romo looking to stand and strike and prevent the takedown.  While Atomi can return fire on his feet, he will need to take the fight to the ground to get the nod from the judges, or if he can use his superior jujitsu to get the submission.  I’m hoping this one goes deep into the 5th again, but I don’t see a stoppage here, I’d back Atomi to defend his title on the scorecards.

2: Super Heavyweight

Abdullah Goldenberg 9-10 (1-0 SPNY) vs Abdoul Murquite 12-5 (9-4 SPNY)

Goldenberg is a very strong sprawl and brawl style fighter who has mainly seen his fights finish in the 1st round.  Interestingly, all 3 of his career fights that have gone past the first round have ended in decision losses.  Murquite is a very good grappler, who tends to use counter takedowns to devastating effect.  Goldenberg will have a distinct striking advantage, and if he can avoid the early takedown has the KO power to end this very quickly.  Murquite is an SPNY veteran who knows that if he takes this to the ground he should be able to sub new boy Goldenberg and work his way up the Super Heavyweight rankings.  I think that the new boy will do it this time and record a 1st round KO, Goldenberg to win.

3: Bantamweight

Raimo Pukki 35-15 (5-2 SPNY) vs Rauno Repomies 20-12 (5-6 SPNY)

Returning for his second stint here at SPNY after a year fighting elsewhere Pukki was expected to challenge the winner of the Cloltran vs Delaroca fight for the Bantamweight title, with that fight finishing in a spectacular draw a rematch may now be more likely than a Pukki challenge.  If anything that may make him a more dangerous opponent for Repomies tonight.  These two fighters actually met back at SPNY 71, with Pukki recording a 2nd round KO, but I see a decision the more likely result tonight.  Neither of these veterans has an obvious weakness in their fighting styles, but both prefer to stand and strike, and I suspect Pukki has a slight edge.  I’d expect a close decision to go Pukki’s way.

4: Super Heavyweight

Teppo Tulppu 14-9 (8-4 SPNY) vs Sellus Gravius 12-5 (0-2 SPNY)

After a mixed run of form, former SPNY Super Heavyweight champion Tulppu has now won 3 of his last 4 and is looking strong.  Gravius on the other hand came to SPNY with a very good record and a large reputation, but as yet has failed to live up to the hype going 0-2 in his first two outings with the org.  Expect fireworks in this one, both these fighters are almost exclusively known for their stand up abilities and both are very heavy handed.  I can’t see this one going past the first round, where I expect Gravius to record his first win with SPNY by a spectacular knockout.

5: Super Heavyweight

Jin Woo Kim 4-0 (1-0 SPNY) vs Troy McLure 11-5 (8-3 SPNY)

Kim is one of the rising stars of SPNY’s Super Heavyweight division and is as yet undefeated.  Today he faces his sternest test yet against SPNY veteran Troy McLure.  Despite the distinct experience disadvantage the youngster Kim has a strong advantage on the ground, but will be up against it while the fight is standing if McLure can use those heavy hands of his.  I’ve heard a rumour Kim is not entering this fight at full fitness, and that makes me think a McLure KO will soil the otherwise perfect record of young Kim.

6: Welterweight

Surangel Oiterong 9-2 (9-2 SPNY) vs Kadian Aitkens 5-4 (SPNY Debut)

Oiterong is on a 4 fight winning streak and has been given the job of testing out SPNY newcomer Aitkens on tonight’s card.  Both are predominantly strikers and I would expect to see this fight remain on its feet for the duration.  Aitkens has shown glimpses of promise in his fights to date, but from what I have seen will lack the work rate and precision in his striking to go toe-to-toe with Oiterong.  If this one is to finish with a one punch knockout, I suspect it will be Aitkens who provides it, but I would anticipate a late attrition TKO or decision to end up in Oiterong’s favour.

7: Heavyweight

Madz Ladz 4-3 (2-3 SPNY) vs Magnus Jonsson 7-7 (4-4 SPNY)

Two out and out grapplers who rarely throw a punch before attempting a takedown meet in this one that shapes to be an intriguing match up.  Ladz is the more proficient wrestler, and should be able to maintain the top position, but Jonsson is a submissions fighter who will look for a submission win while fighting from the bottom.  This could peter out into a boring decision, but I suspect that Ladz will look to exploit Jonsson’s history of cutting easily by dealing out damage from the top position.  Jonsson in turn will look to counter and sweep and submit Ladz.  It’s a tought call for this one, but I like Jonsson to prevail tonight.

8: Light Heavyweight

Bosede Adwamba 20-14 (1-3 SPNY) vs Jimmy Yackey 14-4 (SPNY Debut)

Adwamba came to SPNY as a veteran striker with a reputation for being very heavy handed, as yet he has failed to replicate the success he had earlier in his career.  Tonight he meets highly rated SPNY newcomer Jimmy Yackey, who despite losing his last two fights may prove himself to be the best grappler in SPNY’s very strong Light Heavyweight division.  Whilst Yackey may specialise in ground fighting, he has a solid grounding in Muay Thai which should see him able to combat the 3 inch reach advantage Adwamba enjoys, and defend effectively enough to take this to ground, where his submission skills should make short work of Adwamba.  I fancy Yackey to win on debut with a 2nd round submission.

9: Super Heavyweight

Son Gohan (Professional Debut) vs Derick Moore 2-6 (0-4 SPNY)

Debutant Gohan has had success as an amateur boxer and was a well regarded high school wrestler as a younger man, which suggests tonight we will see a sprawl and brawl style come out from him.  I like to judge newcomers based on who I know they train with, which does not suggest big things of Gohan who trains in one of the most overcrowded and poorly equipped gyms I’ve ever seen.  Tonight though he meets Derick Moore who chooses to train himself without sparring partners of coaches, so perhaps Gohan is the better prepared.  Moore is a decent kick boxer, but lacks other skills, so if he can keep the range with some solid low kicks he may frustrate Gohan who we don’t yet know enough about to predict.  But I for one will back Gohan to win on debut with a solid decision over 3 rounds.

10: Featherweight

Marakosu Garishia 0-1 (SPNY Debut) vs Mingo Deems 0-1 (0-1 SPNY)

Two young featherweights looking for their first professional win.  While both these fighters appear to be enthusiastic, neither has the solid foundation in martial arts that suggests they will have successful careers.  Both have hooked up with good management and training partners, but in my mind both have entered into professional fighting too early.  I like Garishia for this one, simply because I feel his kick boxing skills are most likely to decide the fight, but Deems has improved a fair bit since I last saw him fight, and may have a real chance of collecting a win in the future.
