MAIN CARD

Main Event

Super Heavyweight Tournament Final Fight

#3 Shavo Odin (13-6, 5-1 NGF) v #1 Samson Miodek (13-4, 8-2 NGF)
This is the finals to the super heavyweight tournament with the winner getting a title fight with Rinky Spider.  Shavo Odin is a monster, he has fantastic power with both hands, he is strong in the clinch and he’s successful on 54% of his take downs from stand up.  On the mat he can just be a beast, he can improve well and he is landing 60% of his ground strikes and with his power, he usually gets violent results.  Samson Miodek…okay, go back and read what I just wrote about Odin and ditto for Miodek.  Neither guy has outstanding striking defense, but they both can get flash KO’s and a moments notice.  Miodek will tend to cut his opponents a little more and Miodek is successful on 70% of his take downs from standing.  They are both monsters on the ground and will hurt opponents with their ground and pound.  I don’t know how you pick a winner in this one, they are so similar in styles and skills.  The first fight between them could have gone either way, but Odin was able to get the TKO win.   PREDICTION:  Miodek 2nd round TKO

Co-Main Event:

Bantamweight Fight

#2 Yngwie Malmsteen (12-4, 11-4 NGF) v #6 Yoshiteru Goto (13-9-1, 7-3 NGF)
Two top 6 guys who look like the will continue to be in the title picture after each win.  Yngwie Malmsteen is a good stand up fighter; he has good power and can hurt his opponent with either hand.  He is solid in the clinch, but he’s not much of a ground fighter and both his defense and take down defense have been average to slightly above average at best.  Yoshiteru Goto is super skilled, but he’s had two title shots and lost them both.  Goto will try and get back to another title shot by beating Malmsteen.  Goto doesn’t want to go to the mat and he uses good quick strikes to land and win rounds.  He has solid defense and he is pretty good with his counters and in the clinch he can chew up points with his dirty boxing and his Muay Thai.  These guys are both very good, they first fought each other on 4/28/13 where Goto used his quick feet to avoid strikes and frustrate Malmsteen.  Goto won that fight by decision.  PREDICTION:  Goto decision win

Welterweight Fight

#3 Erik Bennett (18-7, 1-0 NGF) v #12 Aulis Tyrmaaja (8-1 NGF)
Erik Bennet has won 2 straight and is 4-1 over his last 5 fights.  Bennett is an aggressive guy, he averages 36.6 stand up punches per fight.  He has solid striking defense and he has decent power, but he is strong and active on the mat and uses that power with his ground and pound.  Aulis Tyrmaaja is rolling right now winning 4 straight fights and he’ll look to get his name in the title contention talks with a win here.  Tyrmaaja has a granite chin and excellent defense in all areas, he is a good stand up fighter, but he’s very strong and deadly in the clinch.  This is a fantastic matchup that I can’t wait to see, these two are both talented in different areas, but I like Tyrmaaja to win the stand up and be able to hurt Bennett with his power.  PREDICTION:  Tyrmaaja 3rd round TKO

Light Heavyweight Fight

#14 Nick Game (6-2, 1-1 NGF) v #13 Dmitry Boitsoff (13-9, 6-7 NGF)
Nick Game is trying to re-invent himself by dropping major weight and go from super heavyweight to light heavyweight.  Game is still developing, but right now he is more of a control fighter, he’s alright standing, but he can be over worked there.  On the ground he averages 7 ground strikes, but only lands 25% of them.  Dmitry Boitsoff has now lost 3 fights in a row and he just seems to be really confused on what he needs to do in the cage.  Boitsoff is one of the least talented stand up fighters around, and the confusing part to me is the fact that he will not change, he keeps coming out with the same style every fight.  He does nothing standing, he shoots in for take downs and when he misses, his opponent drill him.  He only has a chance if he gets a take down and even then he’s just not great, but he will lock up a submission as he has 13 of them.  Believe it or not, this matchup fits right into Boitsoff’s wheel house, Game doesn’t have good take down defense and he’ll go to the ground as well.  PREDICTION:  Boitsoff 2nd round submission

Featherweight Fight

Gim Ruut (21-8, 2-3 NGF) v Borys Grabowski (14-8, 0-2 NGF)
This one is just a weird matchup, Ruut came into the featherweight division and then started calling out low end fighter, first he called out Chan Sung Jung, which he destroyed and now Borys Grabowski.  These two faced each other last on 12/29/12, which Grabowski won by KO.  Ruut seems to be very skilled on the ground, he has 15 submission wins, but his style isn’t very exciting for the fans.  Borys Grabowski seemingly has hit a career wall, he has lost 6 straight fights and talk out of his camp is he just doesn’t have the desire anymore.  He has very good striking defense and on his feet he has good power and can be dangerous, but he will lose too many parts of MMA, he isn’t good in the clinch or on the ground and he has lost 6 decisions.  Ruut will probably take Grabowski down and get the submission win, but if there is any fire left in Borys, he has the KO power to put Ruut out.  PREDICTION:  Ruut 2nd round submission

PRELIM CARD

Welterweight Fight

#15 Glenn Stroud (13-9, 2-0 NGF) v #7 Macros Motaro (7-3-1, 5-3 NGF)
Glenn Stroud has made an impression on the NGF welterweight division by winning his first 2 fights.  Stroud has looked very solid and a win in this one may put him very close to a title shot already.  Stroud is riding a 3 fight winning streak and he will use solid defense to set up counters.  Stroud is a strong fighter on the mat, but he will get sloppy which has led to 4 submission losses.  Macros Motaro is a big, strong guy with lights out power.  Motaro has good dirty boxing and solid striking defense, but he has no offensive skills on the mat.  This is just a great fight, Stroud is all around better I think, but Motaro is a real KO artist and he will KO Stroud if Glenn isn’t careful.  PREDICTION:  Motaro 2nd round KO

Welterweight Fight

Dmitry Timonyn (12-10-1, 7-7-1 NGF) v #8 Artur Ross (12-4 NGF)
Dmitry Timonyn is a hard worker, you got to give him that, but that hasn’t helped him much with the lack of talent he seems to have.  Timonyn is a dangerous ground fighter in the fact that he has a real skill at getting submissions from his back or catching an opponent in a mistake.  Timonyn is a combination fighter, rarely will he just throw one strike.  Artur Ross is trying to get himself back to a title fight, but a stumble in his last fight has put him a few steps back again.  This is step number one.  Ross is more of a clinch fighter than anything else, he averages 20.2 clinch punches per fight and he has dangerous knees.  He isn’t good on the ground at all, but he has elite take down defense to help him stay off his back.  I like Ross here, I think he’ll fight off the take downs and be able to take a tired Timonyn out.  PREDICTION:  Ross decision win

Welterweight Fight

Radar Salter (11-9, 0-3 NGF) v James Sunderland (11-5, 0-2 NGF)
Well Radar Salter is 0-3 in the NGF and James Sunderland is 0-2, so you know the saying, someone’s 0 has to go.  Salter is a pure stand up guy, he doesn’t have much skill on the ground, but he’s solid at escaping to his feet.  Salter has big power and he tends to look for that over accuracy and defense, often opening himself up for counter strikes and take downs.  James Sunderland is a stand up fighter as well, but as Salter tends to look for power punches, Sunderland attacks the legs and uses kicking as well.  Sunderland is miles ahead of Salter with his defense and I think this will be the reason Sunderland will win this, Salter is like a piece of Swiss cheese with all his defensive holes he has.  PREDICTION:  Sunderland 2nd round TKO

Featherweight Fight

Speedy Atkins (13-8, 1-0 NGF) v #12 Diego Brandao (5-3 NGF)
Speedy Atkins is a very talented fighter who likes to use his speed to get inside where he can use his incredible strength to fight in the clinch.  Atkins doesn’t have great power, but he is very skilled in the clinch and he’ll chew up points there.  Diego Brandao is also very quick and elusive, but he will stay on the outside more than Atkins.  Brandao does have sneaky power, but his game is being able to out strike his opponent.  Neither guy is good on the ground so I don’t think we’ll see this fight go there unless one of them follows a knock down.  I think Atkins is the quicker and stronger guy and I like him in this fight to out point Brandao in the clinch.  PREDICTION:  Atkins decision win

Lightweight Fight

Gabriel Rua (10-8, 0-1 NGF) v #13 Yoshihiro Imanari (12-5, 3-2 NGF)
Gabriel Rua looked very solid in his NGF debut even though it was a loss.  Rua is a very accurate striker with solid defense skills and he has been excellent with both his take downs and take down defense.  Rua’s work ethic in the cage is sometimes questioned, as he can be clinched up or taken down and he doesn’t seem to work very hard to improve his position.  Yoshihiro Imanari is just one of those average fighters, he can look good and does a nice job in all areas, but he can also just look bad and lose in those same areas.  He’s not great at anything, but he can be dangerous on the ground, and then again, he can look simply average.  I think Rua will be very fired up in this fight, he needs to get back to his feet if he’s taken down.  PREDICTION:  Rua decision win
