Author:

Welcome to Barbarian Fight Club 2: The Comeback! We are going to have an action packed event for all you fight fans. December 28, 2013 is the night, and The Underground in Rio de Janeiro is the place. Maya against Takayi will be the main attraction with the feature bout pitting Pepe Lepew facing off against Ronaldo Moura. These are not the only fights to be watching out for as we have two fights at 135lbs, two more fights at 155lbs, two fights at 170lbs, one at 185, and a heavyweight fight as well. Let’s dive right into the action.

The opening preliminary bout with be at bantamweight.

Miguelito Chavez (0-2) versus Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez (1-0)

All signs point to Miguelito having the advantages in this fight. He is a much taller and lengthy fighter, with an extra fight under his belt. Miguelito has spread his training around being known for his Muay Thai, but increasing his wrestling skills every day. His strategy is going to have to be getting this fight to the ground and use his wrestling to point out this fight. The wonderful boxer Carlos Rodriguez wants to prove to the world he should not be the underdog in this fight. His only MMA bout Carlos lay to waste Byron Travis in just under a minute in a half. Carlos clinched a lot in his first fight but should be thinking differently in this one, Chavez is the better wrestler and more than likely that will translate to the clinch game. Chavez should keep his distance and use his jab to set up the big shot. My prediction here is Rodriguez keeps it standing and knocks out the favored Chavez in the first round.

Preliminary bout number two will be are final bantamweight bout of the evening.

Howard “Engineer” Holowitz (0-0) versus Victor “Victor Thai” Lima (0-1)

We have yet to see the twenty five year old wonderful wrestler from Los Angeles inside the cage so far, but he is the slight favorite to the winless Victor Lima. Holowitz should have the clear advantage on the ground with his wrestling skill. Howard is going to want to put Lima on his back and ground and pound his way to victory. For the Brazilian native Victor Lima there must be one thought on his mind. Do anything and everything possible to keep this fight standing up. Victor is definitely the better stand up fighter and in the clinch he should not be looking to pull guard as he did in his last bout. I don’t think Lima will be able to sweep his opponent to get the favorable position. I see this fight going the distance and in my prediction I have Howard “Engineer” Holowitz picking up the win 30-27 across the board.

Preliminary bout number three we will move all the way up to welterweight.

Garry “The Natural” Boyle (1-0) versus Rajesh “Raj” Koothrappali (0-0)

Garry “The Natural” Boyle has very respectable Muay Thai skills and is looking to showcase them against the wrestler from India. Like most fighters coming from the United Kingdom “The Natural” is a stand up fighter looking to brawl. “The Natural” has mediocre wrestling abilities and used them to point out his only opponent. Garry needs to get that idea out of his head for Koothrappali as Raj is beast with his wrestling. Rajesh will dominate the fight on the ground or in the clinch due to his wonderful wrestling pedigree. Raj will be the shorter man which will help with getting position for the takedown. He is also the naturally heavier fighter which will also play to his advantage. When the wrestler takes on the stand up fighter I usually lean more towards the wrestler, but I feel “The Natural” can knock out the wrestling Indian just by looking to counter the double leg. My prediction Garry “The Natural” Boyle wins by knockout in the second round.

For our fourth preliminary bout of the evening we are going down to the lightweight division.

Justin “Arrow” Cruz (0-0) versus Nego “Café” Dobom (1-0)

Both fighters in this matchup have a Muay Thai background. The eighteen year old from the United States will have his hands full even though his Muay Thai on paper is better. While Cruz has wonderful skills in Muay Thai he is brining nothing else to the table. Cruz would love a height advantage here but he is not going to get one. Even though he needs to keep space with jabs to set up for a head kick, or attempt to plum clinch and look for knees. Nego has as well is proficient in Muay Thai but will have a major advantage in clinch game and on the ground due to his more developed wrestling. “Café” may not have the best wrestling skills in the world but he most certainly has enough to overwhelm Cruz. If Cruz looks to clinch I think Nego may want to consider pulling guard or look for the single. Nego should be able to easily point out this fight with the judges and if he can stick to a good game plan he will most likely win each round. My prediction thirty to twenty seven in the three round decision.

Our last fight of the preliminaries will be the only fight we see the big boys. Its heavyweight time.

Bryan “The Organo Natural” Chua (0-0) versus Gustavo “The Rock” Medina (1-0)

The strong wrestler Chua is going to have big problems going into this bout against “The Rock”. Obviously he is going to want to get this fight on the ground and utilize some ground and pound or rely on his blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We have yet to see Chua in action yet so the book on this guy is tiny and that might be his only advantage in this one. “The Rock” is taller and they will be coming into this bout at about the same weight. Gustavo is a mediocre wrestler with strong Muay Thai skills and that little bit of a mix in his game should be enough. Gustavo might not want to clinch due to Chua better wrestling but with the Muay Thai back round it may not matter. “The Rock” and the millions and millions should be picking up the win and my guess will be by knock out in the very first round.

On to the main card and our opening bout. This first fight will be our last welterweight fight tonight.

Hugo Churchill (0-0) versus Ramiro “Superman” Cienfuegos (0-1)

Churchill is a remarkable wrestler from Croatia. Wrestlers prefer to be the shorter stockier fighters but Hugo will not be getting that luxury against Ramiro. One thing Churchill is not going to have to worry about is getting the fight down to the ground. Hugo is the better wrestler and will not have to worry about Ramiro’s BJJ skills. Churchill is going to want to get this fight down to the ground and pound away on the under skilled Cienfuegos. I am not sure what Ramiro is going to want to do in this fight. Ramiro has a better stand up game but nothing overwhelming to challenge Churchill with. He clearly does not possess the skills on the ground to compete with Hugo so my arms are up in the air. “Superman has proven he does not have much of a chin so you would think standing would also be out of the question. I have Churchill dominating this fight and winning by knock out in the first round.

Fight number two of the main card we will return to the lightweight division.

Troy Winston (0-0) versus Felipe “Ferrari” Massa (1-0)

Winston is a respectable boxer and wrestler looking to make an impressive debut. The Canadian is naturally heavier but will be surrendering some height. Winston is going to want to come out and look to counter punch and use his boxing skills to pound his way to victory. If the fight ends up on the mat he does have the skills needed to control or ground and pound and that’s what he will be looking to do. Standing across from him will be the Rio de Janeiro native. “Ferrari” is wonderful wrestler and he used that wrestling skill to get a decision win in his last fight. With Massa not having the standup skills to compete with Winston Felipe is going to need to get this fight on the mat. Winston is no push over with wrestling though so Massa will need to be careful. Massa’s best chance might just be to put Winston on his back and hold control and stall. He will need to grind this fight out. I am going with Massa for the professional fight experience in a three round decision.

Our only fight at middleweight for the evening will be the third fight on our main card.

Ronald “El Cacador” Garcia (0-1) versus Damian “Dami” Silva (1-0)

Garcia has a much better stand up and will need to use it; unfortunately he is giving up a lot of height. Giving up that much height is going to put him at a severe disadvantage especially facing a competent wrestler such as Silva. Ronald will need to use his short base to prevent the take down, and then he will need to clinch. If he can get into the clinch he should be able to dominate the fight. Silva has proven he can finish a fight on the ground with a first round guillotine choke against Sonny Doyle. If “Dami” can get the fight to the ground he needs to look for a quick submission as both men have a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The lengthiness of Silva might be at his disadvantage here as it will be easy for his opposition to grab a loose arm or leg. My prediction for this fight is Garcia with a round two submission.

Starting off the co-main event we will be headed to the lightweight division.

Pepe “Warner” Lepew (1-0) versus Ronaldo “Venom” Moura (0-0)

Lepew is a respectable wrestler and a wonderful boxer which can make for a perfect combination. Use the wrestling to keep the fight up and pelt away at your opponents face. Use the wrestling to get to the ground and hammer fist your way to victory. Utilize the wrestling to get into a clinch and go to town with some dirty boxing. Lepew for this bout is going to need to go with the first strategy as his opposition has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Ronaldo “Venom” Moura has respectable wrestling to go along with his brown belt, and that would be a big problem for most opponents. “Venom” is going to need to stick to a very well thought out game plan or get lucky to pull off the upset. If Lepew takes him down for any reason Moura will need to go right for a submission and really test Lepew’s submission defense. Also in Lepew wants to clinch if I was Moura I would allow it, just to try and pull guard. My predictions for this one will be Pepe “Warner” Lepew winning with a knockout late in the second round.

It’s time for a main event of the evening. This fight will be contested at light heavy weight and could have so serious title implications for the winner.

Aderbal “Tapout” Maia (4-0) versus Heromita Takayi (1-0)

This may be the epitome of the standup fighter against the ground fighter. On one side we have a respectable wrestler with a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt against a wonderful Muay Thai fighter having that backed up by respectable boxing. This fight will be the only fight we will see where both fighters coming in have a winning record. Maia the brown belt will obviously want to stay away from strikes and get this baby to the ground. In his short career he has four fights and four finishes by submission. Two arm bars, a triangle choke, and a kimura to prove not only is he a submission fighter but a well skilled ground fighter. Maia’s longest fight lasted just one minute and thirty seven seconds, so we know he is aggressive and likes to go to work quickly. Standing in the way is Heromita Takayi who got his only win by his opponent tapping out to strikes. Takayi being a standup fighter surprised me in his only fight. He defended some takedowns, and then from his back defended a few submission attempts. He was able to get back to his feet from the ground as well. Poise is something you cannot learn and something Takayi has, after getting split open in his fight he was as cool as ice water in the North Pole. It seems that Maia should have a clear cut advantage due to the wrestling and BJJ skills but as mentioned earlier the poise of Takayi could keep him in this. I am going way out on a limb and taking the underdog for this one, Takayi wins in the third round by TKO.

I will make a few other quick predictions to wrap up this preview. Submission of the night will go to Ronaldo Garcia, Knock Out of the Night Hugo Churchill, and Fight of the Night going to Troy Winston against Felipe “Ferrari” Massa.
