Nitro MMA 5 - Brisbane MMA (RL Article)

Editorial by Neil Rooke

“We’ve sold out.”

The words that I never expected to hear as I tried to talk my way into getting a last minute ticket to what is set to be one of the hottest cards this year in Australian MMA.

It really says something about just how much mixed martial arts is exploding in Australia, especially in Queensland, when an organization like Nitro MMA can sell out a one thousand strong event well before fight day with only five events behind them.

According to Scott Ferris; co-promoter of the company it all stems from passion. Scott has an unfounded passion for MMA and also for the development of the sport in Brisbane. “Queensland deserves bigger MMA events” Scott told me “it’s about developing these fighters and giving Brisbane MMA fans the best fights”. “We are about the bigger picture” Scott explained and it’s his passion and attitude (and quite possibly some marketing skills) that has sold out yet another action packed event at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

Although it would make sense to start to book bigger venues around the country Scott made his intentions pretty clear “we have built a great relationship with the guys at the Logan Entertainment Centre and I can honestly say it’s one of the best venues in the country for MMA” he declared, so good in fact that Nitro has decided to put on yet another show later in the year in the same venue. “We could go to a cheaper venue and make more money” Scott told me “it’s not all about money though, it’s about putting on a great show for the fans and it’s about the total MMA experience.” The guys at Nitro really are about the sport first and money second, yes they are going to work their hardest to turn a buck but at the end of the day it’s about the sport and it’s about Brisbane.

That passion and that attitude is what MMA is really about.

When I asked Scott what the goal of Nitro is he told me “We are about putting together a high end MMA product for the fans in Brisbane” “It’s about the quality first and the money second.” One thing that stood out for me with what the guys from Nitro do is that they support every fighter from top to bottom, “we try and give all the guys the promotion they deserve” Scott exclaimed “and we want to tell a story from top to bottom and ensure that the fighters know they are an important part of the event.”

The main event of the sold out card is set to be a cracker with Dylan Andrews who is fresh off a victory at CFC 20 facing former rugby league player Hale Vaa’Sa for the Nitro Middleweight title. This is the first title fight for Nitro and Scott hinted that their next card which is set for around July the 7th will feature “one or two more title fights and the Middleweight champion defending his belt” by the sounds of things it is likely that the July event will also be a sell out so be sure to get your tickets as soon as they go on sale!

It’s not the end of the world if you cannot make it to what is set to be a fantastic night of fights. Nitro distributes their events on DVD via their website (www.nitromma.com.au) around four to six weeks after it’s all said and done. “We commentate after the event” Scott explained “We try not to rush it; we work really hard on production to get a good product out to the public”.

With so many fighters popping up daily here in Australia it would be easy to expect them to just jump onto one of these cards. Scott has said that “there is so much talent in Australia, we try and focus on local guys, promoting them and making sure they are getting fights” but he did have advice for any aspiring fighters looking to get a shot on one of Australia’s premiere cards “give us a reason to put you on. Take as many amateur fights as you can, send us your record and if we like what we see you will go on the list”, “we are about putting on good fights” Scott explained and there is no doubt that with Australian MMA only just starting to hit its stride there are sure to be so many talents that are just waiting for their shot.

With so much left to offer Brisbane MMA fans there is no doubt in my mind that Nitro MMA will put on a consecutive sell-out event. If the card turns out to be an impressive as Scott thinks it will be, you will no doubt see some coverage right here on CageJunkies! For any aspiring fighters looking for their chance or anyone looking to get more event information be sure to check out the Nitro website.
