22/03/2014

Confirmed bouts

Roger Marsden vs Pvt. Mullen

(Light Heavyweight)

Ilya Murometz vs Julius Lawson

(Heavyweight)

Jack Goodson vs Big Krit

(Heavyweight)

Alex Jones vs Boxer Steel Penn

(Light Heavyweight)

Isaac Bawksir vs Kumogakure Darui

(Light Heavyweight)

Bout previews:

Main card fight (light heavyweight 185lbs)

Isaac Bawksir (0-0) [0-0] vs Kumogakure Darui (0-1) [0-0]

Both of these fighters are coming into this fight having won no previous bouts. This is the first time they are fighting professionally in boxing, and in all likelihood, it is going to be a close fight. Darui is naturally the heavier fighter, while height-wise they are virtually identical. In Darui's only MMA bout, he had great success in boxing, utilising the jab and combos pretty well. In terms of boxing, Isaac has a very slight advantage, but Darui is better in the clinch and could try and clinch it up early.

My prediction: Darui by TKO (left hook) in the 2nd round

Main card fight (heavyweight 265lbs)

Jack Goodson (1-0) [0-0] vs Big Krit (0-0) [0-0]

This fight, yet again, faces relatively untested fighters in Goodson and Krit. Both of these boxers have decent boxing skills, with Goodson sporting an MMA record of 1-0, with the only bout finishing by strikes. He will now transform to boxing, where he will be facing Krit, who is a slightly better boxer. However, Goodson has shown to have good power in knocking Randy out, so this will definitely be an interesting bout. With no information on Krit's striking abilities or previous bouts, Goodson will have a tough time trying to figure Krit's gameplan out. Goodson however will be very undersized in this bout, giving up at least 40lbs.

My prediction: Krit by KO (left jab, overhand right) in the 1st round

Main card fight (light heavyweight 185lbs)

Alex Jones (12-12) [0-0] vs Boxer Steel Penn (0-0) [0-0]

This is a very intriguing matchup. We have got Jones, who is a veteran having fought 24 times facing a debutant in Boxer Steel Penn. Jones sports a 12-12 record in MMA, having won 7 of his bouts by T(KO). He is the younger, taller and heavier fighter. Steel Penn, in this bout, is the superior boxer, but only by a slight margin. He will be going against Jones who is a far more proven, technical fighter who can bring this fight in the clinch and easily take it. The key gameplan for Jones is going to be clinching the fight up and dirty-boxing his way to a victory. In order for Penn to prevent that, he will need to jab away and circle around the ring appropriately.

My prediction: Jones by KO (punches from the clinch) in the 2nd round

Co-main event (heavyweight 265lbs)

Ilya Murometz (23-14) [0-0] vs Julius Lawson (28-16-1) [0-0]

This fight is my personal pick for Fight of the Night. On one corner, we have Muromentz, a veteran of 37 fights in MMA making his boxing debut, facing an equally experienced Lawson who has competed in MMA 45 times. Murometz has 13 knockouts to his name, while Lawson has a scary amount at 22. Both of these fighters have been knocked out 11 times. In this bout, Murometz goes in being the significantly taller fighter at 195cm, dwarfing Lawson's 181cm. In order for Lawson to close that distance, he will need to step-in the pocket and trade close punches with Murometz, thus avoiding the reach disadvantage. Conversely, Murometz will need to stay on the outside and use his reach to pepper Lawson with strikes and gain a TKO victory. This is a great match-up, as while Lawson is the superior boxer (again, by a slight margin), Murometz has the clinch advantage and could use that to roughen Lawson up. Murometz is 7 years younger than Lawson.

My prediction: Murometz by TKO (punches from the clinch) in the 4th round

Main event (light heavyweight 185lbs)

Roger Marsden (23-19) [0-0] vs Pvt Mullen (22-12-2) [0-0]

And finally, the main event of the night. The first ever headlining bout in Golden Ring Boxing Promotions. Two seasoned strikers, Roger Marsden at 42 professional MMA bouts, and Pvt. Mullen at 36, fight in what is predicted to be a great clash of styles. Marsden comes in at a huge height advantage, being freakishly tall at 225cm, while his opponent is at 184cm. Both of these fighters have been knocked out previously. What Marsden needs to do in this fight is obviously keep the distance and tuck that chin of his away. He needs to use his jab to set up his uppercuts and keep circling away. He could also try to clinch up, as his height advantage would shield him from strikes. However, Mullen has one weapon which he should use really well - that is a damaging overhand. If he can close the distance quickly and land an overhand punch, I am certain that he will find the target and knock Marsden out. In order for Marsden to avoid that, he will need to be very accurate and up his combos to keep the fight at a safe distance and then gradually go for the knock-out blow.

My prediction: Marsden by unanimous decision
