OverComing 14: Schindler vs Cox! REVIEW

Event Review: O14: Schindler vs Cox
Overcoming (ID 155k+)
2012-04-15, Amsterdam, The Beer Garden
Attendance:5,047, Event Rating:112
Author:K Rad

What a fantastic night of action we saw in Amsterdam this weekend as Overcoming put on their 14th weekly main event.  Over 5000 fans rocked into the Beer Garden to cheer on 20 fighters in 10 fights, 8 of which didn't make it past the 1st round thanks to some high aggression and brutal finished from those involved.  There were no titles on the line tonight but that didn't stop a great back-and-forwards of smack talk between the current lightweight champion, Magnifico and his last challenger, Schindler, as the latter looks to stake his claim for a rematch.  Magnifico didn't seem to fussed when he replied to Schindler's statement that, "I got business to take care of tomorrow (OC14). But after that I am going to shut your mouth" and if you want to know how Schindler's business taking care of went you'll need to come with me, K-Rad, as I give you the rundown of the top 5 fights on the card.  Alternatively, you can hike up your skirt and go straight to the official OC twitter @JakubWest.

Aaron Green vs. " Worlds Mos Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock
Super Heavyweight

The big fellas of the openweight division got us started in the overcard as Green's striking looked to knock out "WMD" Shamrock's wrestling. Both men came out from the bell aggressively with Shamrock showing good agility to avoid many of Green's initial strikes, although Green did well to also initially keep the fight standing as Shamrock show repetitively for the takedown.  It was only a matter of time for "WMD" though as he got the measure and rhythm of Green's striking and chose his moment well to secure a solid trip takedown into side control which he then leveraged to crank out 7 submission attempts in the following minute and a half.  It wasn't until the 7th and final attempt that Shamrock managed to really pull tight on an arm and force Green to tap out the submission at 2:28 of round 1 via kimura.

Vince "Leo" Magalhaes vs. Irio "Martial" Arts
Middleweight

Two undefeated middleweights kept the action going with "Leo" Magalhaes and "Martial" Arts looked to impose their own gameplan on the other fighter due to their equally high abilities on the mat.  The result was a fascinating fight with very little to separate the two fighters as Magalhaes gained favour with the judges through his aggressive and successfuly takedowns against an equally aggressive and impressive kickboxing striking game from "Martial" Arts.  In a 10-point-must bout this fight would have most likely been an easy 3 round win to Magalhaes but the beauty of the whole-fight system is that both men had an equal chance to win by putting in their hardest efforts and trying to finish the other.  Arts managed to land a successful 24 standing strikes, Magalhaes landed 2 and 4 takedowns.  On the ground both men were equally matched however Magalhaes' attempts to strike probably tipped the fight in his favour as he looked to be the more aggressive fighter and in the end this is what can make or break a judge's decision as the fight was scored 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 in favour of "Leo" Magalhaes who claimed the split decision win.  This is a fight I hope to see takeplace again as I bet both men will be able to amp up the action even further with the confidence gained by being awarded FIGHT OF THE NIGHT.

Amarin "Thalay" Kaewke vs. Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum
Super Heavyweight

Two highly competitive up and coming super heavies took to the cage to try to continue the impressive starts to their careers.  The contrast in "Thalay's" striking game versus "Vai Cavalo's" grappling never managed to emerge as Kaewke stood strong and stuffed 4 takedowns and countered well before engaging the clinch that serves him so well as a Thai boxer.  Kaewke was devastating as he dropped elbows and knees, cutting Werdum time and time again and Werdum had nowhere to hide, only saved when the referee called in the doctor to examine the damage to "Vai Cavalo's" face and the fight was given an early stoppage.  The winner via cut TKO at 1:40 of round 1, "Thalay" Kaewke.

"Junior" Michal Bicki vs. Halk "King Kong" Logan
Lightweight. Co-Main Event!

A dominating appearance by "Junior" Bicki as he looks to prove his worth for title contention.  Bicki took on "King Kong" Logan and gave him no chance to put his vastly superior to wrestling to work as he piled the pressure onto Logan's chin early on, a jap and a cork screwing left, one after the other, left Logan stunned on the floor but seeking the knock out Bicki waved him back up.  Bicki continued to showcase phenomenal accuracy and power as he landed blow after blow, alternating from head to body, knocking Logan down with one right hand and shortly after with another big right hand as Logan looked hopefully outmatched and out of breath.  The finale came just before the 4th minute of round 1 when Bicki unleashed a devastating straight left which put Logan back on the floor, this time with "Junior" smarming him with strikes and the referee called an end to the bout at 2:57 of round 1 thanks to a Bicki striking TKO, the viciousness of which earned him KO OF THE NIGHT!

Kurt Schindler vs. Jerry "The Jump Rope" Cox
Light Weight. Main Event!

The 2nd and final fight of the night to go the distance was the main event between the aforementioned lightweight Schindler and his opponent "The Jump Rope" Cox.  I wrote in the preview that this fight would be determined by Schindler's ability to get the fight to the floor and predicted that Cox would probably be able to resist long enough to land some big hits to end the fight.  I was wrong as Schindler was happy to prove mere seconds into the 1st round when he took "The Jump Rope" to the floor and dominated the position and piled on submission attempts for the entire 1st round.  This was a pattern that continued over both of the remaining rounds as Cox managed to land a total of 6 punches over the entire fight but was otherwise at the mercy of Schindler's aggressive takedowns, ground and pound and submission game.  The result was never in doubt as the fight went to the judges and Schindler emerged the winner via unanimous decision 30:27.  After the fight Schindler thanked the OverComing management for the opportunity to headline the event and commented, "Hey Magnifico, I am coming for your belt son. I will beat you down. Sie sind meine Hündin!!".  I don't speak German but I like to think he was asking for a hug.

WRAPUP:
The reigning 155lbs champion Magnifico has never been a shrinking violet and after watching the Schindler-Cox main event offered these insights, "Once again Kurt proves himself to be an unworthy contender, AGAIN unable to finish a BJJ whitebelt with worse wrestling and definately worse Bjj. If that guy wants to dance with me again, I really hope he will have some standup, cba spending a whole fight slapping away his takedowns.. Again.. However, I was very impressed with the up and coming Michal Bicki, he showed serious class in his fight and I can't wait to defend my belt against him".

Bicki will certainly be feeling consident after his win and if these two big hitters do manage to take to the cage you can bet your sweet arse there will be a fireworks display that may well require us all to wear sunglasses.  Schindler was not impressed however and retorted, "Hahaha, I hear that that punk Heraldo Magnifico is trying to avoid fighting me again so that he can instead fight a guy who has zero grappling skills. His weakness is his wrestling so I can understand why he would want to fight a one dimensional striker as appose to myself. But I would happily prove how much better I am than Michal Bicki in a #1 contender's match if thats what I gotta do to get another title shot. Magnifico's well deserved ass whooping will come eventually no matter how much he tries to avoid it".

There's plenty of action and intrigue heating up the lightweight division so you'd be a damn fool to miss any events featuring the boys of the 155lbs and you'd also be a damn fool if you didn't continue on to read about the SUB OF THE NIGHT AWARD.  The award came to you via a super heavyweight bout between boxer Danil Ergardt and grappling Waclaw Panek.  It doesn't take a Ph.D in clairvoyancy to pick who came out on top of this one as Panek wore 2 early strikes before taking the fight down and after defending a submission attempt and putting on one of his own he managed to take Ergardt's back, get an arm under his chin and start tightening which saw his opponent going blue in the face, tapping furiously and Panek claim the win at 0:59 of round 1 via RNC.

There it is ladies and gents, all of the good stuff and drama from OverComing 14: Schindler vs. Cox.  You know there will be another event this weekend and the famous Magnifico will be headlining it in a rematch against Melo.  Make sure you're there for all the action and trash talking!  K-Rad is out but @JakubWest is there for all your tweeting needs.
