OverComing 16: Aquino vs. Me! REVIEW

Event Review: O16: Aquino vs Me
Overcoming (ID 155k+)
2012-04-29, Amsterdam, The Beer Garden
Attendance:5,047, Event Rating:136
Author:K Rad

What a surprise to see you all again!  I am sure you're equally surprised to see me, K-Rad, standing before you resplendant in glorious good looks and rakish charm.  Actually, you're probably not.  What will be a surprise however are some of the results of this week's offering from OverComing.  In the 15th event we saw Aquino and Me battle it out for the middleweight title as well as a plethora of top up and comers put on a flood of knock outs for the high light reels.  If you only have a short amount of time and you're tossing up between whether to read this review or rub one out over midget clown porn, go with the porn and catch the details in brief at the official twitter @JakubWest otherwise follow me down as we take a look at the highlights of the top five fights on the card:

Wolverine "Admantium jaw" Warpath vs. Danil Ergardt
Super Heavyweight

Ergardt must have paid attention to my mention of "Admantium Jaw" Warpath's nipple nibbling abilities as he spent the moments in the cage pre-fight tweaking his nipples, perhaps to warm them up for the oncoming onslaught or perhaps to see how they compare to adamantium, I am not too sure.  Either way Ergardt didn't hold anything back as he came out throwing everything he had, including the kitchen sink but Warpath showcased some impressive footwork and strike defense to keep out of range.  Once Warpath got into the rhythm, of Ergardt's attack he started countering with well timed punches, working on the body of his opponent and showing up some weaknesses in Ergardt's cardio levels before using the latter's lack of puff to his advantage and working four successive head shots into his game plan.  A tactic which left Ergardt stunned and unsure of how to react as he swung at air time and time again.  "Admantium Jaw" put an end to the bout at 2:37 of round 1 when he dropped his opponent with a crisp jab followed by a solid body blow which dropped Ergardt and allowed Warpath to leap onto him in a flurry of strikes followed by a referee intervention and a striking TKO victory for "Admantium Jaw".

Rich Harew vs. Aurel Cojocari
Lightweight

I most certainly picked the outcome of this fight well in advance as Harew and Cojocari shook down in a battle of Western vs. Thai boxing.  Harew never looked confident during the brief period of time he was conscious in this fight, swinging wildly and without any particular grace or show of technique which allowed Cojocari to pick him apart with solid counter boxing and hefty leg kicks.  Showing Harew that he can fight in his style and outperform him in it, Cojocari unleashed a big 1-2 combination which rocked Harew and was quickly followed up by a brutal uppercut on Harew's exposed chin which left the latter fighter out cold on the floor at 1:58 of round 1 and Cojocari celebrating his 2nd successive KO win from 2 appearances.

"Carbonite" Roy Carbon vs. Mac Intosh
Middleweight

A great middleweight bout between "Carbonite" Carbon and Intosh which saw Carbon spend the fight head hunting and Intosh, inexplicably, fighting outside of his comfort zone and focusing unceasingly on punch combinations instead of working towards his natural abilities in muay Thai.  Intosh was the aggressor early but "Carbonite" was just too swift for him, ducking and weaving and avoiding damage only to counter strike time and time again.  Intosh managed to clinch briefly but he wasted it on a takedown attempt and put none of this Thai to work before, for some unknown reason, breaking the clinch and going back to ranged striking.  This allowed Carbon to go back to his element and after a half minute of handing out beatdowns Carbon rocked Intosh with a straight left and after seemingly taking his time to play with his opponent he eventually knocked Intosh down just inside the 2nd minute with another left followed by a right.  Allowing Intosh back to his feet "Carbonite" continued to tease his opponent with head shots to end the round.  The 2nd round saw Carbon decide that this was getting all a bit boring and charged Intosh in a blur of wild strikes which left him nowhere to go but up against the cage and eventually on the mat as the referee stepped in to award Carbon the striking TKO at 0:27 of round 2.

Jordan Statham vs. Ricardo "Agil" Lombard
Middleweight. Co-Main Event!

Woo hoo! I successfully picked the only submission of the night.  I am pretty friggin awesome.  And handsome.  I probably mentioned that though.  So, Statham the ground and pounder taking on the submission specialist "Agil" Lombard in a fight which was always going to be determined early as both men were keen to get to the mat and but their specialties to work to bring an end to the bout.  Both men were undefeated coming into this bout so there was a lot of pride on the line and despite Statham getting the early advantage by gaining the dominant position thanks to an impressive shoot takedown Lombard kept his cool, his posture and control of the floor game, avoiding Statham's ground and pound and positioning himself well to snatch and arm and force Statham to tap out at 1:47 of round 1 due to an armbar submission.  These slick jitsu skills saw him awarded SUB OF THE NIGHT and it was well deserved indeed.

Jorge "The Damager" Aquino vs. Do "Ré" Me
Middleweight. Main Event TITLE FIGHT!

Another fine title fight in the main event with middleweight champion "The Damager" Aquino defending his title against challenger "Re" Me.  I mentioned in the preview that Me's lack of Thai skills were going to cost him in this bout and this turned out to be true but even more concerning to the challenger was the comparative brilliance of Aqunio's striking game, despite being 18cm shorter, in relation to "Re's" strike defense.  This is something he will want to work on if he plans to be a serious contender in the 185lbs division as Aquino, despite wearing a few head shots of his own during the bout, consistently out struck the challenger and used low kicks to control the action and slow Me down, cutting the latter early in the fight with an uppercut he nearly needed a ladder to reach.  Not a lot else changed for the rest of the fight as the two men put on an entertaining back and forth until Me was clipped by a big "Damager" right hand and hit the canvas, allowing Aquino to pounce and end the fight with a series of strikes forcing referee intervention at 2:19 of round 1.  The winner and still the champion, via striking TKO, "The Damger" Aquino in another FIGHT OF THE NIGHT EFFORT!

WRAPUP:
The last thing to cover before I leave you all to play with your legos is the KO OF THE NIGHT which came in the 3rd fight of the night, a lightweight bout between Hasil Jalil and Pasi Kottila.  Both men are wonderful boxers with a tendency to cut, so a blood bath was expected but it just never had time to eventuate.  Jalil clinched early, got hit, broke clinch and then tried to do it all over again which saw Kottila counter with a cutting hook.  Jalil continued his aggressive and foolish attempts to clinch which allowed his opponent to rock him soon after as he walked straight into a right hand and stunned, gassed and bloody he had no chance of stopping Kottila's final assault which came from a massive uppercut that left Jalil unconscious at 0:50 of round 1.

That's it from me and OverComing for this week ladies and gentlemen!  Make sure you join us for OC17 which will see a title fight rematch between openweight champion Speed and previous champ Nowack.  This is going to be fantastic as middleweight champion Aquino and his manager have thrown down the gauntlet to the much bigger Speed and his team: Openweight fight between the two, 50k wager and the losing manager is forced to wear the avatar of choice of the winning manager in both forum and game for a month.  Exciting right?  I'll let you know more as it comes to light!  K-Rad out!
