Interviewed by Jim What.
What: Today I sit down with one of Highland Challengers 2's fighters Sal Wetviy. Sal, you're coming off of a 3 round unanimous decision against Koo Poon in what was your professional debut. What did you learn about yourself as a fighter from that contest?
Wertivy: I feel that I learned how to dig deep. Training hard in the gym is one thing. Going in there and getting punched in the face for fifteen minutes is another thing entirely. I didn't expect to be as tired as I was. But I had excellent camp, and mentally stepped my game up.
What: We saw you utilize a heavy ground and pound based style. Is that something you planned for?
Wertivy: I try to be well rounded. I don't think I'm bad at anything, but I'm obviously better at some aspects of the fight game. I don't really have a plan entering the cage. Mike Tyson once said everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth. You know what I mean?
What: If you look up to Mike Tyson, might we see you try to keep this one standing at stages in the fight?
Wertivy: We'll find out after I get punched in the mouth!
What: Haha yeah that'll do it. How's training going? Do you feel you've been improving at a good rate?
Wertivy: You know, the standard answer is yeah, I have a great team and all that. But if I'm being honest, no. I'm not progressing as much as I'd like. I need to get in there and earn my money. Better camps. Better sparring. But that's on me.
What: I'm looking to get in there and get a win. I'd rather be in there for 10 seconds and score a knockout, but we'll see.
Wertivy: It will be exciting to see if you can make it two in a row anyways.
Thanks for your time and good luck.
