Felix "The Midnight Assassin" Basilan was the title holder with record 40-18-1. His contender was Kirk St Lazarus (25-14-0) who is 6 years younger and has better in boxing, Muay Thai, and much more wrestling. Another advantage for Lazarus is that he is shorter than Basilan that can be useful in ground fight. They hadn’t fought each other before.

The fight was planned for 5 rounds with 5 minutes for each round.

Lazarus tried to use his advantage in wrestling to take Basilan down soon after the 1st bell rung, but Basilan could push him away. Basilan knew he would be sucked if he accepted to play on the ground and preferred as counter fighter because he has advantage on reach and he done it well.

After a minute gone Lazarus succeed to take Basilan down and could maintain on top position for about 2 minutes to land some punches but he couldn’t do much until the ref ordered to stand up because Basilan defended very well.

Many punches and kicks released by the fighters and Lazarus still tried to take his opponent down while doing punching and kicking but Basilan could manage to fight on his feet.

I thought  judges scored 30-27 for Basilan.

In 2nd round Lazarus managed to take Basilan down before last a minute and tried to submit him but Basilan defended well. Somehow Basilan managed to escaped and got on to his feet again while Lazarus trying to punches him. So the fight back on feet and Basilan kept launch his punches and kicks outside to gain more points. But off course Lazarus didn’t want to be a sand sack, he kept moving inside to punch and kick too while looking for the right time to shoot a takedown. Both fighters giving all what they have but I thought Lazarus won the round and all judges scored 28-29 because he landed more damage and this was the best round.

They still with their tactics when entered 3rd round. Basilan punching and kicking from outside and Lazarus searching the opportunity to takedown while throwing punches and kicks. Both still trading actions to weak each other and win the crowd. And somehow Lazarus could manage to take Basilan down but the bell saved Basilan when Lazarus got in to full mount.

I thought judges scored 28-29 for Lazarus.

In 4th round Lazarus was the one who more active. Still, both fighters doing boxing and Muay Thai things to score points while off course Lazarus kept trying to sneak with wrestling things. Lazarus managed to take his opponent down and tried punish him with all he got but failed.

I thought  judges scored 28-29 for Lazarus.

5th round was terrible round. Maybe they were already tired and the fight was doing on ground. Yes Lazarus could manage to fight on his best discipline but before 1 minute of the round but he couldn’t do much. You know there wouldn’t many actions when doing ground fight because fighters often tried to get better position to punch, submit, and escape.

I thought  judges scored 27-30 for Lazarus.
