Inside The UPF - Mustafiq Rana

Fighter profile of Mustafiq Rana by Dale Saw

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of ALL ages, welcome back to yet another Inside The UPF. As always I am your host Fred Meyer. Today on the show we have a talented young with a so far unblemished record of 2-0. Folks let's give "Merciless" Mustafiq Rana a warm hawaiian welcome.

(Mustafiq struts into the stage waving and smiling to the audience. He walks over to Fred shakes his hand and takes his seat)

Freddy: Hey welcome to the show Mustafiq. How are you today?

Mustafiq: Feeling great thank you sir, training is going well and I can't wait for fight night.

Freddy: So Mustafiq your 1-0 in the UPF. You fought against Kashmire Gates, right? Did you ever feel that you might not win that fight? And did you expect him to defend the first five submission attempts?

Mustafiq: Honestly I thought whoever got the first takedown would probably go on to win the fight. We were very evenly matched and it was no surprise that he was tricky to finish...

(Pauses and thinks for a few seconds) There are very few easy fights at this level. (Smiles)

Freddy: Wow professionally put, I like that. Now I hear you've taken a fight against Twelve Knickerbocker "Pretty Good" and that fight is tomorrow. How do you see that fight panning out. Walk us through how you see the fight going. Are you at all worried about his boxing skills?

Mustafiq: This is going to be about who can implement their gameplan more succesfully. I assume knickerbocker will want to keep it standing while everybody knows I will be looking to take it to the mat given half a chance. His boxing is very technical but I dont think he has fight stopping power... But, I wont be taking any chances though, as anyone can get caught.

Freddy: Well I wish you both the best of luck during your fight. But, let's find out a little more about you. About the man not the fighter. What do you do in your leisure? Now I'm told you actually like to sew in your spare time, That you are also an excellent tailor... Could you spread some light on that rumor? Are you a tailor too?

Mustafiq: I must admit I was not expecting that to come up. But, your sources have really done their research. It all started during my amateur career in egypt, which I called home until gaining american citizenship earlier this year. While there is high interest in the sport they don't value fighter safety very highly, which is where the sewing comes in...

During my debut I was cut above both eyes but managed to see it through and win on points. Arriving backstage I found the doctor had been drinking and was unable to stitch me up. So I had no other option but to attempt it myself... From there I started to act as cut man, surgeon and team seamstress, just dont tell anybody as I have a reputation to keep!! (Chuckles)

Freddy: Haha! Well your secret is safe with me. And, the millions of viewers at home. Haha! Like we'd ever have a million viewers...

Haha! Where were we? Oh yeah you were about to tell me about the man behind the fighter, and tailor. Haha. Any other hobbies?

Mustafiq: Well after revealing that I guess I should try to reassure your viewers that I am actually sane after all, while I stayed in new york, I lived a fairly simple life... Train during the day and then I would try to feed my family by catching fish off brooklyn bridge.

Moving to hawaii has really changed my daily routine, I like to surf every morning before training and then in the afternoon I explore my new home... I look for shrimp trucks to sample local foods and most recently I visited Mauna Kea Obervatories which inspired me to break boundaries, to be the first egyptian in space....which we should acheive by 2043.

Freddy: Wow, that would make you the first surfing, fishing, mma fighting, Egyptian astronaut! Haha! Good luck with that one. You know? I always wanted to be an astronaut when I was a child. But, Hey at least I'm on TV. Haha! Oh it appears that we are running low on time. The last 30 seconds are all yours anything goes.

Mustafiq: Yes I am a real trend setter back home haha (laughs), I would like to thank my training partners, my coaches at Hilo training centre and of course my sponsor Sportsmanship Ltd... Finally I would like to announce my new nickname from this day forward "The Egyptian Armstrong". Mahalo for the publicity freddy and make sure to watch tomorrow night people... expect Total Domination!!!

Freddy: And Mahalo to you "Egyptian Armstrong." Ladies and gentlemen one last hawaiian aloha to "The Egyptian Armstrong" Mustafiq Rana.

Okay next week on the show we will sit down with Adalet Sadik and his mother. You really don't want to miss this one. Aloha til next time, I'm Fred Meyer signing out.
