Island FC Preview (Card Subject to Change)

*Do to this being submitted late, I think the card has been updated.  Sorry for not covering the event in its entirety.  I also may have missed the deadline.*

Event: ISLAND FIGHTS 2 - 18/3/2016 @ Hard Knocks - The Island

Tonight the Lightweight Championship will be defended!  We have a strong series of matches on the line-up tonight.

#1 (170 lbs) - Kurnia (287072)  (0-2-0) vs. Ignacio (289508)  (0-1-0)

An 18 year old will be taking on a 25 year old in the opening match for this event.  Neither man has managed to find that elusive first win, but tonight will prove, (hopefully), to be a pivotal point in one of their careers.  A wrestler will be taking on a boxer here.  Kurnia is a bit obvious with his takedowns, but Ignacio has already suffered a knockout in the 16 seconds he spent inside the cage.  Ignacio will look to keep Kurnia at bay with strikes to prevent the takedown.

Prediction: Ignacio by decision.  Kurnia suffered a decision loss to a less impressive boxer who had inferior takedown defense.  Assuming Ignacio doesn't have a terrible chin, he should be able to wear Kurnia down with strikes.  If Ignacio is taken to the mat, he will struggle to avoid suffering defeat.

#2 (185 lbs) - Attela (289770)  (1-0-0) vs. Armstrong (287001)  (1-3-0)

Armstrong's arms stretch for days.  Armstrong comes into this one on a 3-fight losing streak and is in danger of potentially being cut.  Attela is a boxer, as is Armstrong.  Attela has shown a lack of accuracy and a preference for clinching despite his poor grappling skills.  Armstrong seems to be more accurate and is a better grappler, but is far, far too cautious.

Prediction: Attela by 2nd round (T)KO.  Attela is the more aggressive striker.  Armstrong throws so few strikes that he will be absorbing a lot of blows and it will only be a matter of time before he loses this one.

#3 (135 lbs) - Disgracie (289028)  (2-0-0) vs. Wannabe (290330)  (1-0-0)

Forget it, I'm not discussing this one.  Wannabe doesn't have a manager, that's all that needs to be said.  (I'm probably not doing myself any favors with my boss by criticizing his product...)

Prediction: Disgracie by decision.  Disgracie is the better striker and grappler.

#4 (185 lbs) - Hall (289366)  (1-0-0) vs. Reis (287006)  (1-0-0)

24 year old vs. an 18 year old.  The 18 year old is worse at boxing and grappling and quite frankly isn't that well rounded.  Both men have terrible strategies and try to go to the ground when they should be standing and striking.

Prediction: Hall by 1st round (T)KO.  Hall is overall just the better fighter.  Please win Reis and prove me wrong.  Represent the 18 year olds of the Island.

#5 (185 lbs) - Blades (289200)  (0-0-0) vs. Munoz (286197)  (1-3-0)

A 20 year old vs. a 25 year old.  Blades is an all-rounder while Munoz is a striker with strong grappling.  Expect Munoz, (who has snapped his losing streak), to secure the takedown and pound Blades into unconsciousness.

Prediction: Munoz by 1st round (T)KO.  Blades has good Muay Thai, but his poor wrestling will lead to him being taken to the mat.  Munoz has the skill to control Blades and prevent the submission.

#6 (185 lbs) - Siffredi (289651)  (0-1-0) vs. Basha (289636)  (0-1-0)

Siffredi is obvious with his clinch attempts and likely shouldn't clinch against Basha who has good Muay Thai and grappling.  However, Basha doesn't have a manager, so he's going to be lacking the type of guidance that Siffredi will have access to.

Prediction: Siffredi by 1st round (T)KO.  Basha likes to go for the takedown and has already been knocked out in his previous fight.  Without a manager, Basha shouldn't be able to overcome Siffredi.

CO-MAIN EVENT (170 lbs) - Scaletta (289652)  (2-0-0) vs. Sammartino (289683)  (0-2-0)

Two 18 year olds prepare to clash.  Sammartino is down on his luck, but is looking to change his fortune.  Scaletta is on a two-win streak.  This one should actually be fairly easy to call, unfortunately.  Scaletta is good in the clinch and has the superior wrestling skills while Sammartino has good submission skills.  Sammartino is outclassed in the boxing department.

Prediction: Scaletta by 1st round (T)KO.  You know, for a submission to be viable, you have to have the wrestling skill to secure a takedown and manage to get into position for the hold.  Crazy, right?  And yet so many fighters have been making this mistake recently.  Scaletta will get the clinch and beat down Sammartino.  Sammartino won't be able to take him down, so... yeah.

MAIN EVENT (155 lbs) - *Champion* Herculano (286473)  (4-0-0) vs. Kontio (286424)  (4-0-0)

This one should be a bit interesting.  Both fighters will be placed in strange situations for this battle.  Herculano is a tough striker who controls the clinch with his Muay Thai and grappling prowress.  Kontio has insane wrestling skills and has a bit of a submission background.  Both men are also very strong, so it'll be a weird conflict on all levels.

Prediction: Kontio by 1st round submission.  Herculano won't make the good decision of staying on the outside.  He'll move to clinch, be taken to the mat, and be submitted.  If that doesn't happen, then this will get interesting as these two grapple, with Kontio trying to get Herculano to the ground while Herculano tries to either strike on the outside or push Kontio to the wall.

(Check it out!  Despite being employed by Island FC, I am willing to criticism them.  Isn't that neat?  It'd be nice if some of the other writers around here were willing to do the same).
