Highland Island 21 Preview

Event Preview: Highland Island 21
Highland Island
2016-03-19, The Island, Hard Knocks - The Island
Author:Callum McGregor

Are you guys ready? This event marks the return of Island #1 HW and undefeated KO star, Volijn Ulfzaar. He returns from a months break to defend his belt against Thundercunt, well one of them anyway. The card is also full of other HW fights, so one must think the next contender to the HW crown will be determined on the 19th.

Voljin "Medicine Man" Ulfzaar vs. Theodericus Thundercunt – 265lbs TITLE FIGHT

Ulfzaar looks to go the whole season undefeated, but he must go through the powerful Theo Thundercunt.

Fighting 9 times in a little under 2 months, all of those wins coming via first round destruction, it’s no surprise Ulfzaar is the most popular fighter on the Island. His fighting style is very aggressive, as he looks to bum rush his opponents into a clinch where he uses his dirty boxing technique and his wrestling to control. In the clinch he generates a lot of power in a short distance as none of his opponents have found a solution for his clinch attack.

One of the many Thundercunts of this Island, he has good boxing background and he packs a decent punch to add to his danger. Other than that he has shown an aggressive dirty boxing game like his opponents, but he is much less accurate within the clinch than Ulfzaar. His one loss to date was an opponent who was more powerful than him when they tied up and was able to control and land the harder short strikes to finish Thundercunt.

I don’t forsee Ulfzaar losing this one, Thundercunt has been beaten before by the methods Ulfzaar employs the best.

Prediction: Ulfzaar via TKO

Val Halla vs. Ilmari Kuusi – 265lbs

Val Halla comes in with a 3-1 record with his only loss being to kingpin Ulfzaar. He has a very powerful boxing attack and has also shown the ability to fight in close with some dirty boxing technique. In his loss he found himself out muscled in the clinch, this may be something Kuusi looks to exploit.

Kuusi has yet to get going in his career going W-L-W-L-W. Is this the fight he finally gets a win streak? He is very one dimensional as he charges for takedowns over and over again until he gets one. On the floor he has proven to have a solid BJJ attack as well as natural ground and pounding abilities. However on the feet he has bad striking defence, as opponents connect with 90% of their punches on Kuusi.

I see Val Halla avoiding the takedowns before swarming in with a barrage of punches for the finish.

Prediction: Halla via TKO

Nikita "Uppercut" Astakhov vs. Keola Fatu – 265lbs

After dominating the local scenes Astakhov lost his Highland debut to title contender Thundercunt. However if he can put his boxing to work like he did on the local circuits he can build a run to the title. A powerful boxer by trade, he headhunts like there is no tomorrow and his opponents struggle to avoid his crisp punches.

Fatu is a fantastic wrestler who is slowly developing other aspects of his MMA game. But his bread and butter is shooting in for takedowns and ground and pounding. He has yet to have one of his takedowns stuffed, as he has nice sets ups for them. Whilst he doesn’t connect a great deal with his punches or kicks they serve so he can follow up with a takedown.

I think Astakhov has the perfect style to foil Fatu’s wrestling. He will keep it at a distance where he will pick Fatu apart.

Prediction: Astakhov via TKO

Slade Phoenix vs. Arman "The Horse Archer" Aigul – 265lbs

Pheonix was inspired by the Brazilian fighters of legend, as his Muay Thai skills and his BJJ game is on point. He strikes with all 4 limbs, and scores damage with them. He has no wrestling skills to speak of but his dangerous submission game keeps his opponents in constant danger.

Aigul is a similar fighter, in that he specialises in his offensive guard and dangerous stand up. However he is much more boxing orientated although he has shown some good kicking abilities, they are mainly to keep opponents guessing.

Aigul’s main concern is his ability to take a punch, with 2 losses coming via KO. I feel Pheonix will be gunning for his chin and will find it at some point during the fight.

Prediction: Pheonix via KO

"The Maori Warrior" Tangaroa Ngata vs. Gunnar The Eastern Assassin – 185lbs

Ngata excels inside the clinch. He has great wrestling abilities and his muay thai offensive arsenal allows him to land with punches from all kinds of crazy angles with great accuracy and power.

Assassin is the traditional sprawl and brawler, with powerful boxing and solid defensive wrestling. He likes to throw punches in bunches and that worked in his one and only fight but he may find himself in dangerous positons if he tries the same thing vs a higher experienced fighter.

I’m taking Ngata in this fight, he should be able to tie Assassin up and land with his punches.

Prediction: Ngata via TKO
