Matt Quin Q&A

Fighter profile of Matt Quin by Alika Webb

Q: Dear martial arts fans, today I will pay a visit to the one of the best mixed martial artists in the middleweight division and the current number two pound for pound fighter in the world, Matt Quin. He's found a home in the world-renowned Global Association of MMA, or GAMMA in short.

Only 28 years old, he may have started his career in GAMMA on low note, getting finished in his promotional debut, but he came back with a vengeance. Like a phoenix he has risen from the ashes and is now fresh off his first defense of the GAMMA middleweight title. Now Matt, after winning the title from former champion Viv Richards you actually went to EVO to face their middleweight champion in a super fight. What is your take on that fight?

Matt: Rockmeteller Todd was the number one fighter in the middleweight division and I was number two. A super fight seemed like the logical next step and I'm glad that both GAMMA and EVO were able to come to an agreement so that we could settle things in the cage.

Q: Matt, do you realize you shocked the MMA universe with that fight? Not only did you pull off an incredible upset but you did it so fast and so flawless that you made it seem easy.

Matt: Oh, rest assured it wasn't easy, there was definitely some luck involved. Todd is a world class fighter and he didn't go down easy. I had a plan and stuck with it and with a bit of luck I managed to finish him in the first round but I was prepared to go the distance in a five round war if necessary.

Q: After the super fight you went back to GAMMA to face Viv Richards for the third time, were you surprised to see he cemented himself as the number one contender so quickly?

Matt: I wasn't surprised, the first time we faced I knew he was something special. I like to think that in terms of skill we are even but in the first fight he showed me something I didn't yet have: the heart of a true champion, the never say die attitude to keep on fighting no matter what dangers lie ahead.  Every time we faced each other it was close and while I went to EVO for the super fight, Viv pulled off a first round knockout against the powerful Willie Stoppers to claim the right to be my first challenger, so a third fight made sense.

Q: Did the third fight go as you planned it to go?

Matt: Pretty much, it was a five round war where every little mistake could be fatal. The old man still has a lot of fight in him but I knew that and came prepared. We went the distance and I luckily got my hands raised in the hand.

Q: Matt, thank you very much for agreeing to meet with me and I like to wish you the best of luck. I look forward to seeing your next fight!
