How To Make Money Off Of Mixed Martial Arts

Editorial by Mike House

Mixed martial arts or MMA has been on a steady rise for the past decade. While boxing still provides the biggest purses, MMA is catching up fast thanks to greater media exposure and public awareness. Some of the fighters are becoming household names, getting big sponsorship deals, and starring in movies. There are also an increasing number of bettors aiming to make money off of their passion for the sport. Options are increasing for the fans which make the fights even more exciting to watch. Go to Free Bets to get more information, offers, tips, previews and guides. Here are some of the betting opportunities:

Outright Winner

By far, the most popular option is to pick the outright winner of the match. This can be hard when the two fighters look evenly matched on paper. Often, people tend to go with their gut and hope for the best. In most cases, however, there will be a favourite and an underdog. The former is the safe bet although the profit is generally slim. The latter is risky but the returns are tempting if there is an upset. There have been a lot of upsets in this unpredictable sport which is partly why people love to watch the drama unfold.

Fight Duration

Fans may also bet on the duration of the fight. This requires a bit of knowledge about the rules of the game. These can vary depending on organisation and the type of match. For instance, non-title fights typically last for 3 rounds while title fights extend for 5 rounds. Some fighters are known to take out their opponents quickly. Their track record may show that most of their bouts end within the first round. Other fighters like to grind it out and wear down their opponents. They may have a history of going the distance.

Method of Victory

Aside from the winner, how victory will be achieved is also of interest to many. Will it be by knock out? If the favoured competitor is a known striker, then this is a likely outcome. Will it be by technical knockout? This may happen when one of the fighters get brutally beat up. Although he or she is not out cold, the punishment is deemed excessive by the referee and a clear winner is declared. A few fights can also end in a disqualification if one of the fighters breaks the rules. Victory may be obtained by submission or a decision from the judges.

Type of Decision

A decision is likely if the competitors are evenly matched. Fans may bet on the type of decision that might ensue from the judges. There are three distinct possibilities: unanimous, majority and split. A unanimous decision is one in which all of the judges' scorecards favour one fighter over another. A majority decision is characterized by two of the three officials scoring in favour of one fighter while the third judge sees a draw. Lastly, a split decision happens when two of the judges favour one fighter while the third favours the other.
