GAMMA#638 Wolek v Junior 2 – June 3

265 title - Gunnar Steigelmann (c) Vs Zeus Leonidas

The first time these two giants collided, the super heavyweight title was on the line and they didn’t pull their punches as they went in guns blazing. Their first encounter was an amazing war that tested both fighters in more ways than one. Leonidas surprised not just the champion Steigelmann but also the thousands of fans in attendance and the millions watching at home, when he not only stood toe to toe with Steigelmann but actually outworked him in two rounds with his lightning-fast strikes combined with some powerful takedowns that kept Steigelmann from getting something going. Steigelmann on the other hand did what he is known for: throwing bombs. He was throwing sledgehammers with reckless abandon and then some. A bloody mess that was once known as Zeus Leonidas was left behind on the mat after Steigelmann finally managed to finish the durable Greek in the fifth and final round.

Now the rematch was set, Gunnar Steigelmann was to defend his heavyweight title after a superfight in a rivaling organization turned sour. Leonidas on the other hand was on a two fight winning streak after getting a new manager and looked ready to become a champion for the first time in his career. The challenger Leonidas did a good job of taking the fight down to the ground after a short uppercut drew some of his blood, which put him ahead on the scorecards after the first round. The second round started and Leonidas’s confidence got a major boost when he opened up a cut on the champion’s face. But his happiness didn’t last long as the champion Steigelmann dropped him to the mat with a brutal head kick. Gunnar Steigelmann took an earful from his coaches when he followed the grappler down to the ground and nearly got caught in some tricky submissions. Luckily for the champion, the referee had no intention to keep them on the ground for long and he was able to get back to work, rocking the challenger just before the end of the round. The third round saw the champion make the same mistake again as he knocked Leonidas on his backside and followed him to the ground. In the fourth round he was so confident, he even took the challenger down to the ground with a trip takedown to establish his dominance on the ground but again it backfired as the challenger was the more proficient grappler. In the end Steigelmann’s stubbornness didn’t hurt him that bad as the damage he’d done so far had opened a cut so horrific the ringside doctor was forced to end the fight.

Winner: Gunnar Steigelmann by TKO (cut) after 3 minutes and 16 seconds in the fourth round.

145 title - Lukasz Wolek (c) Vs Underestimated Dillashaw Junior

Superfights aside, the GAMMA champions still like to dominate their rankings and don’t shy away from taking on champions in other weight classes. Underestimated Dillashaw Junior is the bantamweight king in GAMMA but he wanted to become a two division champion so he moved up a weight class to take on featherweight champion Lukasz Wolek who’s been unstoppable in 2017.

Underestimated Dillashaw Junior should not be underestimated because when he sticks to a game plan he can put you in a world of hurt. Such was definitely the case in this fight as the challenger kept messing up the champion’s timing with slapping leg kicks and sharp punches. But the champion never considered backing down despite losing the first three rounds on points, he kept throwing haymakers and eventually managed to counter a leg kick with a smashing right hand that rocked Dillashaw Junior and a few seconds later that was all she wrote.

Winner: Lukasz Wolek by TKO (strikes) after 25 seconds in the fourth round.

GAMMA#639 Bryant v Hika – June 10

265+ title - Gerbert Bryant (c) Vs Hongi Hika

One of the most dominant champions in GAMMA, Gerbert Bryant touched gloves with fresh challenger Hongi Hika. Gerbert Bryant is back on track, riding a three fight winning streak after hitting a minor bump in the road named Gymer Alexandersson. Heavy hands and dominating grappling skills are his signature moves and he is always ready to put them to use. His challenger is Hongi Hika, a proud New Zealand native who’s gone undefeated since November 2015. With all of the challenger’s wins ending by knockout, Bryant needed to keep his hands up at all times.

The fight started with a bang, both challenger and champion started swinging for the fences as they collided in the center of the cage. Gerbert Bryant got sliced open by a grazing jab and decided that it was better to be safe than sorry. A slamming thud signaled the beginning of the end as the champion put Hongi Hika on his backside. The ground and pound of the champion was relentless and before long the referee had to step in, saving the challenger from taking any unnecessary damage as he was knocked out cold.

Winner: Gerbert Bryant by KO (strikes) after 4 minutes and 27 seconds in the first round.

GAMMA#640 Origi v Kakoulis – June 10

155 title - Robert Sito (c) Vs Robin Yount

Right after winning back his title from Geoffrey Barbossa, Robert Sito was handed a frustrating decision loss when he drew the short straw against Synchronicity lightweight champion Lil Wayne. Winning only one fight in his last three, the lightweight champion needed to make a statement to undo the damage his reputation has taken recently. Set to take him on in desperate times is the former champion Robin Yount, the man who Sito once beat to win the GAMMA lightweight title for the second time in his career.

Robin Yount got right into the champion’s face and the champion didn’t want to back down. They went from one brief striking exchange to another but Robert Sito quickly established his dominance as he knocked the challenger down with a big head kick. Robin Yount was on spaghetti legs and the champion went on a hunt like a lion stalking its prey. Sito knew the challenger was hurt and upped the pressure until a huge left hand ended the challenger’s night.

Winner: Robert Sito by KO (punch) after 57 seconds in the first round.

205 superfight - Divock Origi (GAMMA) Vs Sotiris Kakoullis (EVOLUTION)

One of the most talked about superfights in a while took place under the highly regarded GAMMA banner and what a fight this turned out to be! Divock Origi was catapulted to the moon by his fans after a fight of the year candidate with former GAMMA light heavyweight champion Menace Defoe, which Origi ended up winning and earned him the prestigious title. But the notorious Belgian Beast was at the receiving end of some harsh criticism from his doubters after receiving an incredible superfight opportunity right after winning the belt, instead of defending it first. His haters called him overrated and many wondered if the Belgian Beast was going to be able to rise to the challenge or be exposed when he would come face to face with an established world class athlete.

In comes Sotiris Kakoullis, a highly regarded mixed martial artist who was once the number one pound for pound fighter of the world and a Tycoon Olympics Gold medalist whose numerous accomplishments earned him the 2016 light heavyweight fighter of the year award. Many considered Kakoullis the favorite as up to this point, Divock Origi had never faced an opponent on the same level as Kakoullis. But that’s easy to explain as Sotiris Kakoullis is part of a very exclusive club that consists of the cream of the crop. Only the absolute top of elite fighters in the world know what it’s like to walk in the shoes of Sotiris Kakoullis. Divock Origi didn’t want to simply receive an invitation to this exclusive club, he wanted to grab the invitation from the living legend’s cold dead hands. Sotiris Kakoullis didn’t seem impressed, as he considered Origi just one of many hungry lions coming to take his seat on the throne.

Hours before the fight was to take place, there were whispers that Sotiris Kakoullis might not appear in top shape for this superfight of global magnitude on one of the biggest stages of them all. Word got out that Kakoullis had taken his training to the next level as he did in fact recognize Divock Origi as a serious threat. The rumor mill started turning and the fans speculated that Sotiris Kakoullis overdid it and ended up training so hard that he wouldn’t be able to recover in time for his fight. Speculations aside, if there’s one thing this fight didn’t need was more drama. Divock Origi, fresh off the biggest win off his career - a fight that’s already in the running for the best fight of the year – was on his way to conquer the whole wide world. The biggest villain to some, the biggest hero to others was on a quest for global domination. The new blood was going to take over the reins from the old guard. Sotiris Kakoullis, the living legend who had fallen into hard times was ready to get back on the horse. The veteran was going to give the young stud the beating of a lifetime and send him packing. Kakoullis was going to prove all his opponent’s haters right. Two world class brawlers with dynamite punches were going to go toe to toe and only one would be left standing! Tension was already running high without the last minute drama but now the fans were going wild with anticipation as the event kicked off.

Divock Origi came storming out of the gates and a clobbering overhand right hand quickly opened up a ghoulish-looking gash on Kakoullis’s forehead. Sotiris Kakoullis was seeing red as his own blood was trickling from his face and like a bull he came alive with fury. A cross punch thrown with lethal intent paid Origi back in kind as the Belgian Beast got busted open on the side of his head. Sotiris Kakoullis started gaining momentum and kept pressuring his opponent. Kakoullis started pummeling Origi with punches while sapping Origi’s strength away as his tree-trunk-like legs connected with Origi’s midsection and his slapping leg kicks kept Origi on his toes. Like a battering ram, Sotiris Kakoullis kept going to town on Origi and the Belgian Beast was in a world of hurt. Divock Origi had his hands full playing defense as an abundance of strikes was coming his way from all possible directions but every time he saw an opportunity, he hit back with his razor-sharp fists. Unlike the versatile Kakoullis who was landing strikes all over the place, Divock Origi kept things simple as he was mostly headhunting all night long. Origi was missing frequently but when he connected, the cut he created at the start of the fight was blossoming open like a flower until Kakoullis’s face looked like it had just come out of a traffic accident. The bell rang, ending the first round. Sotiris Kakoullis had certainly outworked the Belgian Beast from start to finish as he had kept Origi guessing with a plethora of strikes. On the other hand, Divock Origi didn’t seem to sport much damage from Kakoullis’s full-body assault while the face of Kakoullis spoke volumes about the brutal force of the punches Divock Origi was throwing.

Round two started with Kakoullis continuing his onslaught as he landed a punch that made Origi stumble back to his corner. The crowd was on their feet and screaming for more but now Origi was taking over. Kakoullis - seemingly exhausted from the relentless pace he had kept up since the start - was having a hard time connecting with his punches as his accuracy from the first round had dropped significantly. Divock Origi kept throwing bombs and when they landed they looked like they were hitting tomatoes as blood was flying all over the place, coating the canvas with a crimson layer. The referee saw the laceration getting worse by the second and called for the ringside doctor to have a look. The doctor took one glance and called for the bell as Sotiris Kakoullis was battered beyond belief, thereby ending the fight.

Could it be that the rumors were true? Did Sotiris Kakoullis make a grave error in his training regiment? Or did the veteran throw caution to the wind and it simply ended up biting him in the ass as he had underestimated the Belgian Beast? No matter the reason, the spoils go to the victor. Congratulations are in order for Divock Origi as he’s definitely earned the right to boast about one of the biggest accomplishments of his career and has so far withstood temptation.

Winner: Divock Origi by TKO (cut) after 4 minutes and 47 seconds in the second round.
