ISLAND FC PRESENTS IFC 8 – GUNSHOT! Ladies and gentlemen of The Island I hope you’ve taken your heart medication and got your affairs in order because we have an absolutely electrifying night of fights coming up for you live from Hard Knocks Event Centre on July 22nd. Island FC in partnership with After School Syndicate clothing presents: IFC 8- GUNSHOT! First up in a middleweight scrap is the debut of bjj sensation Renan Gracie. Gracie, a native of Brazil and descendant UFC hall of famer Royce Gracie, takes on “The Maharaja” Shakir Abdul Rahim. Rahim is a strong wrestler with an affinity for grounding and punding his opponents. He’ll be in tough against the fiercely active guard of Gracie. Donny Drumpf is a stand-up fighter in the mold of Chuck Liddell. He uses his wrestling to keep the fight from hitting the mat and looks to make an impact with fists. That suits his opponent just fine as Kicky McKickface, looks to use his muay thai prowess to deliver explosive strikes and end fights. Fresh off his first professional win, Mako Takaziko is looking to show that his submission victory over Indigo Myles was no fluke. A BJJ blue belt with penchant for trading strikes in the pocket, “Crazy Monkey” will have his hands full with Duxney Pierda. The man they call “Q-Ban” in his native Cuba, is a BJJ purple belt with an amateur background in boxing. He will be hoping to reverse his fortunes here and get back into the win column. Coming up next is a tilt between the Frenchman Francis Lacaille and his opponent Gaspar Carvalho of Portugal. Lacaille has been unsuccessful so far in his professional career but is confident he can turn it around and Carvalho. Alternately, Gaspar Carvalho has yet to taste the bitter sting of defeat in his young career. Both fighters prefer to stand and trade so expect this fight to end in explosive fashion! I hope the cage is triple re-inforced for this next bout. In our superheavyweight division we have 2 combatants that love to work from opposite sides of the ground. Paea Supuaga is a slick bjj practitioner that loves to work for submissions from his back. His opponent, the appropriately names Thor Magnunsen, lives to to punch faces. With both of his victories coming by way of fist-to-face, he has established a reputation for extreme violence. What he lacks in technique he makes up for with brute force. A classic clash of styles in this contest, to be sure. Nicknamed “The Dream”, David Hanson certainly is living the dream of becoming a professional mixed martial artist. Riding a 3 fight unbeaten streak, the welterweight phenom looks to continue his run of domination against “Big salami Frank Turturro. Turturro transitioned to MMA after a successful career as an adult film star in his native Italy. Both fighters are accomplished BJJ players and favour working from the mat. Turturro has a slight advantage of the ground and Hanson has a bit of an edge on the feet. Regardless of where this fight ends up we can be sure it will be a heartstopper with an epic climax! Following up- next is another pair 170lb bangers. Alexander Porto and Clive Garrett are both riding 2 fight winstreaks and are looking to make some noise in the IFC welterweight title picture. Both fighters favour the art of muay thai and love to trade leather. Don’t expect and subtle ballet of grappling here. This is sure to be an all out slugfest with both fighters utilizing all 8 points of contact. My prediction: Fight of the Night by a landslide!!! In a heavyweight contest with absolute heavyweight title implications, Ion Novosad looks to continue steamrolling the competition against Big Mike. Big Mike has big fists and loves to use them. Both fighters are power punchers who pack a whollop. Novosad comes in with the experience advantage and is a little more well-rounded and has unheard of knockout power. However, the muay thai technique of Big Mike is absolutely flawless and will make finding openings in his defense nearly impossible for Novosad. But it only takes one punch. This fight is sure to be an absolute slobber-knocker! Which fighter will remain unbeaten? Which fighter will walk away with the stench of defeat? Find out on Saturday night at hard Knocks! And now for our co-main event of the evening!!!! A 5 round battle for the undisputed middleweight championship! The challenger is a man known across the globe for his unparalleled brazillian jiu jitsu acumen. Called “one of the most creative submission grapplers I’ve ever seen” by none other than UFC hall of famer BJ Penn, Iaman Asshole looks to capture IFC gold in his second crack at the title. Coming up short against former IFC champ Robert Hurt, Asshole has learned from his past mistakes and plans to put those tough lessons to good use against current champ Luther Jones. Jones doesn’t have the prettiest fight technique, but his unorthodox mix of strikes and movement have given his opponents fits. Add to that his inherent ability to punch like a freight train and you’ve got a recipe for a championship reign. Not a single opponent has managed to make it our of the second round with the man known affectionately as “Touch of Death”. Will Asshole be the first to stop the man from the land down under? Now, the fight everyone is really excited to see!!! Our main event is sure to blow your minds! The IFC heavyweight champion of the world, Heavy Weight takes on the powerful, fast rising challenger Grigori Rasputin! Both fighters are riding 4 fight unbeaten streaks, leaving a trail of battered bodies in their wake with all 8 of their combined wins coming by way of KO or TKO. Heavy Weight trains out of the highly regarded Ivan Drago fight camp, home of fellow IFC champions Super Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight so the pressure is on his broad shoulders to continue the tradition of championship dominance! Rasputin is very much from the same mold as his name sake. Tough as nails and nearly impossible to defeat. Will Heavy Weight retain the title that he holds so dear? Or will the crowd end up cheering ‘Ra Ra Rasputin!’ as we crown a new champion? Boys and girls. Ladies and gentlemen of the Island. Can you in good conscience afford to miss such a legendary card that is taking place in your own backyard? The answer, as you and I both already know, is no. You can’t. And you don’t have to. Get your tickets for this Saturday night for IFC 8 Gunshot only at Hard Knocks here on The Island!!!!
