 GAMMA#655 Volkov v Pierno – August 19
170 title - Ilya Mstislav Volkov (c) Vs Tim Pierno
Ilya Mstislav Volkov was once again sitting on the welterweight throne and he wasn’t going to give it up easily. Fresh off a total war with Rufus McTearson, the new champion felt the pressure to perform more than usual as he needed a dominant performance to once again establish himself as the undisputed champion. Challenger Tim Pierno on the other hand hadn’t been defeated in his last four fights. Italian native Tim Pierno is known for his endurance and never say die attitude so the fans knew they were in for a slugfest.
The tale of the fight was all about the champion’s dominance and the challenger’s frustrations getting the better of him as he was constantly chasing after the champion’s shadow. Ilya Mstislav Volkov did a great job of mixing his strikes and his patterns of attack shifted so much that it flustered the challenger to no end. Tim Pierno was looking for that knockout punch and was swinging haymakers like you wouldn’t believe but no matter how hard you throw them, if they don’t land you’re just wasting energy. The champion kept the challenger on his toes by constantly striking and getting out of the way before the challenger had time to strike back.
Winner: Ilya Mstislav Volkov by unanimous decision.
GAMMA#656 Goodman v Diehard – August 19
155 title - Vladimir Emelienko (c) Vs Cullen Castrello
Although his last fight nearly ended on a sour note, Vladimir Emelienko conquered the beast that is the former champion - Robert "Sitek" Sito - and was thereby crowned the new lightweight champion. Now he faced his first challenger, the bigger and leaner Cullen Castrello. On a three fight winning streak, Cullen Castrello looked to win the first title fight in his career at a respective 33 years of age. Both are primarily known for their kickboxing ability but the challenger has a mean clinch game, packs a punch and had a height advantage that couldn’t be ignored so the champion knew he would have his hands full.
In true Emelienko style, the champion tried to establish his dominance but it was the swarming attacks of the challenger that set the pace. Castrello did exactly what the champion himself is actually known for and then some, Castrello simply outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game. While Castrello was thanking his fans after the fight, Vladimir Emelienko was clearly disappointed and emotional in his loss as he stormed out of the cage as soon as Castrello’s hand was raised.
Winner: Cullen Castrello by unanimous decision.
185 title - Saul Goodman (c) Vs Bruce Diehard
Saul "Slip The Jab" Goodman didn’t have it easy against his last opponent but the result was just the same, as the champion retained and won his fifth fight in a row. A kickboxer who prides himself for his work ethics as hard work is his number one weapon. He never takes it easy and never wants to give his opponents an inch. He had another tough bone to chew as the next opponent was waiting in line. The challenger this time was a new arrival from KnockOut FC, the gritty grappler and submission powerhouse Bruce "B A M F" Diehard.
Saul "Slip The Jab" Goodman’s strength is his relentlessness to keep coming at you with everything he’s got but the challenger more than put the champion’s stamina to the test as Bruce Diehard blasted the champion with body punches and was always looking to close the distance. A few close calls aside on the ground, the champion’s dominance was crystal clear as he continuously rained an armageddon of striking torrents. Vicious punches struck meat and bone with lethal intent, shotgun-like kicks struck the challenger with malice and at the end of the day, Saul Goodman once again had his hand raised.
Winner: Saul Goodman by unanimous decision.
The rest of the month was dominated by the Money Fight, the entire world was glued to their screens as they watched one of the biggest super fights in the history of combat sports. But in that short timeframe, Gamma’s legions of gladiators did not lay still. No title was defended but title implications were overly present. Irish firepower Arthur Curry made a statement and earned himself a title shot with a quick knockout victory over former heavyweight champion Joe Jordan. Divock Origi’s chances of getting the trilogy he so craved against Menace Defoe appear grim at best as he was defeated by Hector Verama in a three round war and it appears his manager has all but left the building. Last but not least, Lao Shin "To Chin" made his case for another title fight by taking out Daniel Mosby with a convincing first round finish.
