HFC 22 - Jack vs Carter review
Coming from the Liberty Dome in New York City, this event featured some great fights, and topping off the night was a title fight between Hefty Jack and Jason Carter.
Fight of the Night Awards:
FotN: Manolito Tai Kung vs Jackson Stoner
KOtN: Sha'quan Woods
Sub ofN: Lucien Lachance
Manolito Tai Kung vs Jackson Stoner was a beat down, to way fight that went nearly the full three rounds. These guys went at it on the ground, as many expected, and though Stoner was a lot more accurate, Kung was just relentless on the ground. He opened up a cut on Stoner that forced the doctor to call an end to the fight, or this thing would have likely went to the judges.
Sha'quan Woods displayed some excellent striking as he needed under 2 minutes to score the KO victory over his opponent.
Many would judge this a TKO victory, but it was determined his opponent went to sleep before the ref could stop the fight, hence the official KO victory.
Lachance needed just under a minute to display his BJJ skills and forced his opponent to tap out after locking in a slick triangle armbar.
Main Cards:
Hefty Jack vs Jason Carter (185 Title)
In this 185 Title fight, we have Defending Hefty Jack taking on challenger Jason Carter. Many expected this fight could go either way, as Carter is viewed as a legitimate contender for the title.
Hefty Jack has been impressive, to say the least. With a 9-1 record and now defending champion, Jack has mowed down the opposition here in the HFC with calculated precision and shear will. He defeated Johnston, then Marley to set himself up in title contention. He then took the belt from champion Rob Tanner, and now has warded off a top talent in Jason Carter.
Carter has been equally impressive. Undefeated in 7 fights in Madness, and reigning champion and three time defending champion of the Madness crown, Carter was viewed as a heavy favorite by many outside of the HFC. Only those that have seen Jack win time and again against fighters as the underdog know that you can never count out Hefty Jack.
Jack got the fight to the ground in a hurry and dominated the first round. The second round started the same, and in a display of raw power and aggression, Jack just rained down a barrage of strikes that even though well defended, were just too much for Carter to withstand. The ref let them fight, to his credit, but Carter fell under the brutal assault of Jack and had to take a little nap to regain his senses.
Blaze "Wow, Jack is a beast, isn't he? I won't like, I thought Carter was going to dominate this fight, and I couldn't have been more wrong. Jack just keeps coming, and coming, and coming.. and winning.. my God man, he's like a train with no brakes! I don't think I can pick against him again, he just keeps proving me wrong."
Hefty Jack, winner via KO 3:36 of round 2. And still, reigning HFC champion of the world!
Jaxon Stoner vs Manolito Tai Kung (170) FotN
Jaxon Stoner comes into this fight riding a roller coaster of a career. Showing flashes of pure dominance at times, but never able to string together a series of victories. He did capture the F&B championship earlier in his career, but was traded to Madness a week later where he lost his title chance there. He bounced back, scored some big wins, and now in the HFC finds himself against the top talent in the world.
Introduce Tai Kung, some of that said top talent in the world. Kung is a well rounded fighter and he showed as much in this fight. He mixed in head and body strikes, from punches to kicks. A little of everything. When stoner took the fight to the ground, Kung displayed some very skilled ground game in warding off Stoner's advances. Stoner was very accurate in his GnP and landed 13 of 15 strikes, but wasn't able to finish off Tai Kung.
Tai Kung displayed more power as he cut Stoner early and throughout the fight kept adding to the damage. By the 3rd round, the doctor stepped in and called an end to the fight because Stoner was bleeding badly and was showing no signs of giving up. This is one of those fights where the doc may have done Stoner a favor in avoiding permanent damage. I guess doctors don't like scars as much as fighters and chicks do.
Tai Kung, winner by TKO (Doctor's Stoppage) 3:57 round 3. (yes, only 3 seconds from the end of the fight!)
Any thoughts on this one, Blaze? I know you've spent a lot of time with Stoner.
Blaze "Well J.W., I expected a war and a war I got. I was disappointed by the stopage in the fight, but I can't say I don't understand. But I would really have liked to see this fight play out because these two guys were beating the hell out of each other, and that's what Hardcore is all about!"
Olyrn Seran vs Jose Carvaleho (155)
This fight had a little bit of everything, didn't it? These guys stood toe to toe, neither able to take an advantage. Carvaleho took some shots, but seemed unable to land anything from range. He managed to slip the fight into the clinch once, but only landed 1 solid strike there either. When he got the fight to the ground, he got aggressive in looking for a submission, but Seran warded off all 13 attempts seemingly without effort.
Seran didn't look much better from striking range, but he did land 9 of his 17 strikes and when the fight went to the ground, he grappled well and timed his moves. This allowed him to lock in a nice armbar on the aggressive Carvaleho, forcing the tap.
Blaze "This was an interesting fight. Both fighters are better grapplers, so I'm very surprised at how long the fight stayed standing. But what is really amazing to me is the amount of submission attempts that Seran was able to fight off. I mean, 13 submissions is a lot, sort of a spamming of them, and seemingly making him predictable. Seran took advantage of this and on only his third submission attempted locked in a beauty of an armbar that forced Carvaleho to tap out before snapping something in his arm. Very impressive fight by Seran."
Seran wins via submission (armbar) 1:24 of round 3
Your Sweet Destruction vs Sha'quan Woods (170) KotN
Woods is a baaaad man, I'll say it again, Sha'quan Woods is a bad, bad man. Your Sweet Destruction is an experienced fighter with an 8-3 record coming into this fight. He's fought some tough dudes and usually puts up a fight, win or lose.
Woods has been a very good fighter until his last fight at Madness MMA against, you guessed it.. Your Sweet Destruction. This fight was a war that went the distance, and the judges granted a victory to Destruction in a split decision. Well, what better way to kick off their HFC careers then to give them a rematch to see who really wins this fight?
Woods came out and left nothing to chance with a beautiful KO in the first round. He was not about to leave this one in the hands of the judges again, impressive KO and earned him KO of the Night award.
Blaze "Wow, what a KO! Man, that thing was right on the money and there was no doubt that Destruction was asleep when he hit the floor, but Woods wasn't taking any chances and jumped down and layed the hammer down until the ref pulled him off. I don't know if it was bad blood or just a pure will to prove that he thought he won that last fight, but man, what a knock out!"
Woods wins via KO (punches) 1:46 of round 1.
