HFC 25 - Slingin vs Tai Kung

Fight Preview with Harley Blaze and J.W. Hardman. June 27, 2020  New York Liberty Dome   Welcome to HFC 25, where Slash Slingin gets to defend his gold in our main event, and Chad Repine gets to take on another tough challenger in our co-main event.  A lot of changes in HFC with a few titles now up for grabs, so some of these fights have much larger title implications than originally anticipated when this card was booked.     So I'm here with Harley Blaze to break down a few of these fights and get Harley's picks as we've grown accustomed to of late.        Blaze "Great card, and there are so many more title considerations being put on the line tonight.  We already have two title fights to cap the event off, but our Featherweight and Lightweight divisions have recently been vacated, leaving them wide open for whoever is ready to go take it.  I can't wait to see how this card turns out, so lets get to it."   Main Cards   Slash Slingin (11-1) vs Manolito Tai Kung (8-1) Welterweight Title   Slash Slinging put an end to a HFC legend to claim his championship gold.  Anyone who steps into the cage with this man knows what he brings to the table, and knows to bring their "A" game.   Not a strong striker, but he doesn't usually need to be when he gets the fight on the ground.  With 8 wins via submission, Slash has become the new submission face of the HFC.   The challenger, Manolito Tai Kung, steps into this fight looking to put a highlight reel finish on display in search of his first championship belt.  Tai Kung lost to Samuel Rodrigues back in HFC 10 in his only title shot.  Now, he'll be looking to take out the man who took out Rodrigues, the new champ, a new challenge,  the same journey.   This fight appears to be simple grappler vs striker, but Tai Kung poses a unique threat as even though he's a striker, he's very capable on the ground.  Not quite the wrestler that Slash is, but matching him in a brown belt in BJJ.  If Tai Kung can keep this one standing, he's got a real shot at victory.  If he keeps his composure on the ground, he may just have a chance at reaching that dream.   Blaze "J.W., this should be a great fight.  These two come in here with outstanding records and squaring off for the first time?  If you add in Tai Kung's 3-0 KT record, he matches Slinging with an 11-1 record.  Tai Kung's only loss was to a submission artist, just as Slingin's only loss was to a striker.  This fight can go either way,  and every fiber in my bones is telling me to pick the upset, Tai Kung over Slash Slingin.  But When I try to say it out loud, I just can't do it.  I have to stick with the champ to pull off another defense.  But I won't be surprised one bit if Tai Kung pulls this one off.  But I think the champ's high IQ will prove to be the difference maker in this one."   Prediction:  And still....  Slash Slingin wins via submission in round 4.   Chad Repine (8-3) vs Gervais Lavigne (8-1)  Bantamweight  Title   Defending champion Chad Repine has proven his grit over his career at HFC.  Despite losing his HFC debut to then Champ, Cody Garbrandt, he came back to win three strait, and after Garbrandt retired, nobody could stop Repine, not even Jack Waller who stood across from him in his second title shot.  Repine focuses on his wonderful boxing and exceptional wrestling to keep his fights right where he wants them.  But tonight will be one of, if not his toughest challenge to date.   Gervais Lavigne is a terrific striker, though giving up a slight edge to Repine in boxing, has a huge edge in his MT skills.  Repine is a much better wrestler, but I do not see either fighter looking to take this fight to the ground until their opponent is on their back.    Blaze "This is the first of two great title fights.  We have had multiple title fights before, but usually it's one really good fight and another that had a heavy favorite.  Well, that's not what's going on Saturday night.  Repine is a hell of a fighter, as tough as they come, but he's going to be matched up against another striker who's just as deadly as him.  I expect this fight to stay standing and giving Lavigne the edge to score his 9th TKO victory.  And new!!!"   Prediction: Lavigne wins via TKO in round 3.  And new HFC Champion.....   Haki Hugbergsson (6-2) vs Matt Curtis (7-2)  Super Heavyweight   Hugbergsson comes into this fight with 6 wins, all by submission.  He has outstanding grappling skills with exceptional  wrestling and holding a brown belt in BJJ.  Riding a two fight win streak in the HFC, over Jason Mendoza and Killer Bee, he'll be looking to make it three in a row against Curtis.   Curtis does have some ground game, but nowhere near the level of Hugbergssons.  He'll hope to keep this fight standing where he can utilize his strong boxing and wonderful MT skill-sets in hopes of earning his 7th KO victory.   Blaze "This is one hell of a card for trying to pick fights.  This one could go either way, just a matter of if the fight stays standing long enough or not.  Or how long Curtis can hold out and defend while on the ground.  Will the ref stand them up to speed up the action?  Who could pick this one?  I think Curtis is the more rounded fighter, and obviously a very good striker, but I don't see him having a chance if if Haki gets this one on the ground.  I'll have to give the edge to Curtis based on his manager's reputation."   Prediction:  Matt Curtis wins via KO (Flying Knee)   Alex Ferreria (7-2) vs Whata Hitson (3-2) Heavyweight   Ferreria was riding high, top of the world, 7-0, two time champ, current Madness champ, and then something happened and it all went to hell.  He lost his title defense against Kocak, and then couldn't bounce back in his last fight against Petersson.  From 7-0 to 7-2, it's time for Ferreria to turn this around.  A deadly striker, he'll be looking to use his sensational boxing to KO Hitson.   Hitson only sports a 3-2 record, but has won his last two, both via KO, and his HFC debut in only 32 seconds.  He's a great striker, able to stand toe to to with Ferreria, and even a much more accomplished MT specialist.     Blaze "Don't expect either of these guys to be looking for a takedown, unless they think they can catch the other napping or something.  These guys are going to slug it out and we're going to see a KO in this fight, but who is anyone's guess.  Hitson is a much more well rounded striker and balance out with Alex on the ground, so really you have to wonder if the edge in boxing can make up for his lack in MT."   Prediction: Hitson wins via KO in the 3rd.
