GDL 60: - Wright vs Crusher

Undercard

Vicente vs Downtown – Did you know Milo Vicente was a GDL lifer? Neither did I. 10 fights with some very mixed results, Milo is looking to bounce back from a 2nd-round KO in GDL 54 and rumors from the Vicente camp tell us that manager, Johnny Tirado is disgusted with his peripheral stats. Can he finally find the right game plan for this 170 bout against Fatz Downtown? Downtown hopes he doesn’t because his own plan is solid; clinch, punch, clinch, down, grind, win.

Henderson vs Papas – Ryan Henderson continues to dance at the bottom of the 155 division. Why? His only GDL loss is to continually inactive Tatsuya Kimura and he’s won his last two in impressive fashion. Still, we can’t argue with the fans, who have unanimously not believed the hype. Could be worse, he could be Nicky Papas. Voted the worst GDL fighter in the 155 lb division by an anonymous online poll, Papas has been garbage his last two fights after retiring Dominic Triggs in his only GDL win. He needs to get back on track, and quick.

Galvarino vs George – Rollo is making his 145 lb debut with a new manager after spending his first three GDL fights in the 155 division. Rollo has good experience, a decent record, but his manager is unproven and we’re unsure whether he will stand and bang or take it to the ground. Chris George is making his GDL debut after stints with GDL-rival RRFS and the now-defunct ACE. He wants to take it the ground as soon as possible and take advantage of his BJJ skills.

Blikstein vs Ape – Two fighters on their way up in the tough 185 lb division, both are on three fight-winning streaks. While they have a ways to go to reach the upper echelon of the division, this is a statement fight for the winner. The Professor’s most recent fight was an impressive 24-second knockout of journeyman, Fred El Celso, and Grey Ape dominated Jared Roughneck at GDL 54. Both have the power to score knockouts, only one can boast of it.

Hearn vs McGraw – The Viking has had three managers in his short MMA career, but he thinks he’s landed on the right one. After an inconsistent start to his career, Hearn showed up at GDL 53 a new man and kicked his opponent into retirement … literally. Tabloids this week showed him working on his leg kicks by booting steel soccer balls in the Steel City. PillowHands McGraw, recently signed to GDL under much hype, is undefeated in five professional fights. The rest of the 170 pound division took no notice of the signing, saying anyone with pillows for hands couldn’t be considered a threat. Watch those knees.

O’Neill vs Aldo – What to make of O’Neill? A 145 stalwart, his only two losses were to Cleon Wright and Batang Kock, two of the division’s best. His camp has been privately worrying about his conditioning, with one source quoted as saying “I just don’t think he cares anymore.” Regardless, O’Neill’s a serious threat if he can control the clinch and he’s already beaten Aldo once. Conor Aldo hopes to bounce back from his GDL 47 loss to O’Neill and sail off into the sunset on a high. Negotiations between Aldo and GDL on a new contract have stalled with Aldo stating “irreconcilable differences”.

Von Mises vs Snoozeman – Ludwig Von Mises has his eyes firmly set on the 170 championship and is clearly the next in line if he can keep his concentration through one more fight. He broke Snoozeman’s arm off and beat him with it back at GDL 31 and then ran up three more wins after that. He’s as hot as any 80 year-old Austrian economist can be. Meanwhile, Nebraska hasn’t had anything to cheer about since Eric Crouch won the Heisman. Odds makers don’t predict a change. But the .500 “Nebraskan Nightmare” is on a real roll since his loss to Von Mises in May. It seems like his planning is finally catching up to his talent. This fight will be no snoozer.

Main Event

Tragedy vs Scotty – Trage Tragedy has fallen on hard times, losing 4 out of his last 5 fights. The former SMASH middleweight champion came into GDL with a lot of hype, and has failed to live up to lofty expectations. His overall record is impressive, but take away the four QFC wins and you have an almost-.500 fighter. His manager, Rob Roy, disagrees. “You’re a joke. Edy a .500 fighter? He should be fighting for the belt, not chumping around with Scotty.” Heading in the opposite direction, Beam Scotty has run his winning streak to six after pummeling his opponent at GDL 55. He works almost exclusively out of the clinch, but can grind with the best of them. He’ll need to keep his fists sharp against the faster Tragedy.

145 Title – Wright vs Crusher – In the fourth minute of the first round at GDL 55, Can Crusher landed a huge right after pawing Cleon Wright with a short jab, knocking the 145 champ out for his first and only loss. To the huge relief of Wright’s camp, the title wasn’t on the line that night. Now, a month later, we show up at GDL 60 to watch the 5-round rematch for the 145 lb championship. Wright had been virtually untouchable in his previous seven fights, winning the title at GDL 41 and successfully defending in twice since. Crusher’s record doesn’t stand out, but he’s the only one to catch Wright square on the jaw, the only one to stand over him in celebration. Was it a flash in the pan? Or does Crusher have Wright figured out? We’ll soon find out.
