Combate 4 Preview

Event Preview: Combate 4: Jefferson vs. Dead
Combate
2020-10-31, Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo Arena
Author:Darren Russell

Combate returns for their 6th show since the rebirth of the 2017-established Rio-based fight promotion.

The entertainment-centric organisation will return to the Flamengo Arena for the third time in four weeks with a BLOCKBUSTER fight card, featuring three title fights and culminating in a mouth-watering welterweight title eliminator.

WELTERWEIGHT MAIN EVENT (3x5)

Marshall Jefferson (10-3) vs. Evil Dead (12-3)

Cuban sensation Marshall Jefferson looks to return to winning ways after losing the inaugural Combate Welterweight Championship clash against the recently dethroned Cross A Zoo back at Combate 1. 'Thug Baptism' holds an impressive nine knockouts on his resumè, with seven of those coming inside the opening round and will hope he can secure a second shot at Combate gold against Boris Matusov later this year.

Tough Azerbaijani technician Evil Dead will pose the toughest of opponents for Marshall Jefferson, with this matchup seemingly in the pipeline since both made their debut for the promotion. Dead is riding a three-fight win streak, alongside picking up four consecutive 'of the night' bonuses as he looks to cement his legacy amongst the great welterweights in the sport.

COMBATE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (5x5)

David Tua © (31-21-1) vs. Jon Umber (12-6)

David Tua shocked the fans in attendance at the Flamengo Arena just four weeks ago, starching Jon Umber just over one minute into their title clash with a perfectly timed head kick, scoring an incredible 24th KO victory of an illustrious career for the 39-year-old. The Samoan graciously accepted a rematch against the younger Jon Umber and prepares to make his first defence of the Combate Heavyweight Championship in a tantalising heavyweight rematch.

With 36 knockouts between them, one thing is for sure... this isn't going to the judges' scorecards!

COMBATE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (5x5)

Tomomisan Tsuruta © (14-7-1) vs. Saku Lehtonen (4-1)

Japanese-born, Russia-based jiu-jitsu black belt Tomomisan Tsuruta looks to defend his Combate Light Heavyweight Championship against promotional newcomer Saku Lehtonen. The champion Tsuruta, despite his grappling pedigree has won seven of his fights by way of knockout, with no victories scored by submission so far. Saku's record might not be a fair reflection on his combat sports journey, having previously amassed an extensive kickboxing record before turning professional in mixed martial arts. This might be a step up for Saku, but don't sleep on his heavy hands on this one!

COMBATE VACANT FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (5x5)

John Michael Benitoy (14-6) vs. Ergun Cerrahoglu (4-4)

Just three weeks on from their first matchup, a rematch with the vacant Combate Featherweight Championship between John Michael Benitoy and Ergun Cerrahoglu goes down at Combate 4, with international audiences from Benitoy's nation The Philippines and Ergun's Turkey tuning in live from Flamengo, Brazil for this one. The experience edge definitely lies with Benitoy, but Cerrahoglu at just 20-years-old will hope to avenge his narrow decision loss and become one of the youngest world champions in mixed martial arts history. Will five rounds be a factor? Only time will tell!
