Diary of a Crime Fighting Cage Fighter

Fighter profile of Han Wulong by Damian White

"Um momento." says Han Wulong, as he takes a sip of green tea, before sitting across from me. I arrived ten minutes early to his interview: just as he finished his training for the day. Graciously, he agreed to talk with me in English, his third language.

Wulong is a former police officer in Macau, having recently retired to focus on his MMA career. Born to first generation Macanese immigrants in Lisbon, he moved to Macau to study at 17, before dropping out to join the police.

Myself: Apologies for catching you at a bad time, Han. How was training?

Han Wulong: It went well. Focusing on tightening up my boxing currently.

M: I understand you're scheduled for the first defense of your heavyweight title in a few weeks.

HW: Yes. Iron Fist Championship 4.

M: What do you know about your opponent, Dionisy StraKos?

HW: Nothing. It's disconcerting, to say the least. He's 0-0, so I have no idea what to expect.

M: Does that bother you?

HW: Somewhat. I've gone into situations before where I thought I had all the answers, and come up short. With this, I don't even know the questions.

M: How do you plan to combat that?

HW: I'm champion for a reason. I don't imagine he'll cope too well with being slammed and punched in the face repeatedly. The unknown excites and worries me in equal measure.

M: Let's talk about your journey thus far. Your first fight was a very lopsided decision loss. How did you cope afterwards?

HW: I contemplated giving up. The force were eager to have me back, and it seemed like the safe option. But, safe just doesn't bring me fulfillment. So, I pulled myself up by the bootstraps; and got myself back to the gym to fix where I failed.

M: How were you feeling going into your second fight?

HW: I was surprised being offered a title shot, especially coming off a loss. But, it was too good an opportunity to turn down. I knew what I had to do and went out there and did it.

M: Do you have any goals, medium term?

HW: I recently signed a loan deal to compete in Money Promotions, so I plan on taking their Heavyweight belt sooner or later.

M: Some pundits believe you to be too small to be at 265, standing at 5'5". How do you respond to that?

HW: I understand what they mean. But, I'm not built to be much smaller. Maybe I'll consider 205 one day. Right now, though? I'm a heavyweight and proud. Okay, I have time for one more question.

M: Anyone you want to call out?

HW: Peter Halyna, I see your work and I like it. Come to IFC and show me what you got!

Han Wulong will be defending his title at Iron Fist Championship IV on June 12th.
