KC"s Corner: Q & A with Scott Speed

Fighter profile of Scott Speed by Kc Cooper

Hey all you Tycoon fight fans, KC Cooper here with the first installment of "KC's Corner" a Q & A with some of the world's best fighters you may have never heard of. Our first sitdown is with #4 ranked Featherweight in the world, Scott Speed. Here is what he had to say.........

You were born in Moscow, Russia. What was it like growing up in your neighborhood???
Growing up in Moscow was hard, the only outlet I had was fighting. That's where I learnt to fight, on the streets. Got quite a few KO's to my name before I ever stepped into a cage!

In your first professional fight, you were known mostly as a boxer and it showed with an 18 second knockout, how did that first win feel???
I had confidence in my hands, I knew I could win, but getting that first 'W' meant everything to me and to win in the way I did really proved to me that I had chosen the right path.

Your first professional organization was NFC Challengers in Helsinki, which is world renowned, what was it like being on that big of a stage so early in your career???

I felt very little pressure to be honest. I had been training solidly for a long time for that first fight, I knew I had the skills to win. I had no pressure to win from my manager, I was originally signed to be a sparring partner to Kazuki Kobayashi, but due to problems with our locations, that never happened. But when I started racking up the wins people realized I was no sparring dummy! Ha Ha!

Four of your first five fights lasted less then a minute, with one of those being your first shot at a title. Do you feel like it was inferior competition or are your skills just that damn good???
Those were good guys, not easy competition by any means. Just look at Sammy Sugarol, on paper, he has greater boxing skills than me, but look at the record - I beat him in 18 seconds the first time, 46 seconds the second. I am just that good! Ha Ha!

Your first fight in Pegasus Cagefighting League was a title shot, and you dominated every round of that fight. Was there any point in that fight that you thought "What is keeping this guy standing"???
You know, I was unhappy with my performance in that fight. Yeah, sure I dominated him, but going to the judges is never in my game plan. I think I gave him too much respect, he was the champ, it was my first fight for PCL and I felt a lot of pressure, I had knocked out all my opponents, and only once seen the second round. I just felt I lacked the killer instinct for that fight. Not something I want to repeat.

Obviously having 11 of your 13 wins come by way of knockout your boxing skills are very prominent, but what many people don't know is that you are a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu. Do you have more pride in knocking people out or would you settle for a submission victory as well???
I'll take a victory anyway I can, if the submission is there, I'll go for it. But my fights don't go to the ground too often. It's not pride, I just love that feeling when my fist crunches into somebody’s face and their eyes roll back and they fall down. Can't beat that.

You are now ranked as the #3 Featherweight in the world, is there anyone specific that you would like to fight???
Line them up and I'll knock them down. Being 3rd or 4th I think I am right now, is great, but obviously I want to be number 1. And not just in my weight class, but pound for pound too. The guys ranked above me are super talented and would all be a huge challenge, but I'm game for it. Clint Lomax is number 1 right now, I'd take a fight against him if I was offered.

Some people feel that being in Pegasus is the reason why a lot of people have never heard of you. What do you say to those people???
Pegasus has some top guys. It has the top ranked heavyweight in St. Petes in Joaquim Maria. It may not be the biggest, but it's not some can factory. Time will come when everyone has heard my name.

Do you have anything else you would like to say to everyone out there???
I'd just like to thank everyone who comes to see me fight, keep coming, and I'll keep on winning. Thank you.
