The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Michaels throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mendes tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Michaels is in Mendes's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Michaels wanted to stand there but Mendes had control of the position.

Mendes is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Mendes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Michaels is aware though and is defending well.

Mendes has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Michaels is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Mendes.

Mendes is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Michaels's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Michaels's back!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Michaels is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Mendes gets his way!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
