Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Robbie Lawler! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Avery Brads! The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Darius Henderson and Damien Edna.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brads misses with a low kick.
A clash of legs there as Lawler blocks the low kick. Brads tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Lawler swivels and escapes. Brads shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Lawler is trying to defend but Brads finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Brads is looking to advance position but Lawler won't allow it. Brads wants to control but Lawler is keeping him busy. Brads is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Brads blocks the strikes from Lawler.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Brads is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Lawler defends it well. Brads trying to mount his opponent but Lawler defends it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lawler tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Lawler trying to control but Brads postures up.
Lawler has one foot on Brads's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Lawler scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
It looks like Avery Brads has been cut. Lawler goes for a double leg but Brads avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Brads continues to drive forward. Brads throws a leg kick but Lawler moved away. Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Brads lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Lawler has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Lawler and we're back underway with a touch of gloves. Lawler swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Lawler fails to land the takedown. Lawler has taken the fight to the clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Brads misses with some punches.
Lawler is trying to pull guard but Brads turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robbie Lawler. That's going to take a lot out of him. Brads has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Lawler regains guard immediately. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Lawler is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Brads defends well. Brads's corner is telling him to maintain position. Brads trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Brads drops back, looking for a kneebar! Lawler looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Lawler looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Lawler!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lawler working away. Brads is not content to let Lawler control the position. Lawler tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Brads is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Lawler's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Lawler looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Brads tries to roll over but Lawler keeps him under control. Lawler is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Brads sees it coming and defends easily. Brads gets back to full guard.
Brads looking to hit a scissor sweep but Lawler is one step ahead there. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brads is on top in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Robbie Lawler will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Avery Brads's cut. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Lawler throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Lawler blocks a leg kick. Lawler forces Brads back against the cage and clinches. Lawler manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Lawler keeping moving, preventing Brads from controlling successfully. Lawler might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Brads engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Brads trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Brads trying to control but Lawler is working from the bottom. Lawler looking for a sweep. Not yet Lawler, not yet. Brads stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lawler swivels though and keeps the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Brads trying to control but Lawler is working from the bottom. Lawler looking to control.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Lawler tries to clinch up but Brads circles away and keeps his distance. Lawler closes the distance and clinches up with Brads, looking for a takedown. Lawler pushes Brads against the cage but Brads circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Lawler lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Brads backs up against the cage.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Lawler checks a leg kick. Lawler tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Brads paws at him with a jab and circles away. Lawler tries to bum rush Brads with a series of wild strikes but Brads uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Lawler throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Brads fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Lawler to the ground. Brads is now in Lawler's guard. Brads pushing down on Lawler's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Brads takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Brads's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Brads wants to control but Lawler is keeping him busy. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Brads looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Brads wants to work for an arm triangle but Lawler is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brads tries to pass the half guard into mount. Lawler knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Brads wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lawler keeps working. Brads wants to pass the guard but Lawler is defending well. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Brads in particular looking to stall. Brads seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Lawler is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
