PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nuppu Surmas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jamal Jazzer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Nuppu Surmas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jamal Jazzer!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Shirou Masuda and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for Jazzer, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Jazzer is looking to clinch but Surmas is avoiding it.

Surmas shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Surmas showed some decent athleticism there.
Surmas thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Jazzer's head.
Jazzer is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Surmas wants to control but Jazzer is keeping him busy.
Jazzer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Surmas is working away from the top position though.

Jazzer is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Surmas pulls his head out easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jazzer is holding on to half guard well.

Surmas is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Surmas thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Surmas tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Jazzer swivels and escapes.
Surmas lands with a slapping head kick.


Jazzer is rocked!
Jazzer misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Jazzer is still on wobbly legs! Can Surmas finish him?
A nice combination there by Jazzer.
Horrible takedown by Jazzer or perhaps it was just good defense by Surmas which made him look bad.
Jazzer seems to have recovered his senses.

Surmas closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Surmas lands in his opponent's guard.

Jazzer working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Surmas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Surmas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Jazzer wants to stand but Surmas is controlling the position.
Jazzer trying to keep a closed guard but Surmas is proving a slippery customer.

Jazzer can't keep his opponent in guard - Surmas advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Jazzer is trying to stand back up but Surmas is controlling him
Surmas is nestled in close to Jazzer, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Surmas lands with a punch from half guard.

Surmas is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Surmas is keen to just control but Jazzer is a slippery customer.
Surmas is looking to advance position but Jazzer won't allow it.
Jazzer is not content to let Surmas control the position.
Surmas works his way into full mount!

Jazzer is looking to get to half guard.
Surmas can't control as he wanted to and Jazzer manages to get the fight back to his half guard.
Jazzer wants to get back to full guard but Surmas has mounted him!
Jazzer is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Surmas lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Surmas blocks Jazzer's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Jazzer really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Surmas lands a big elbow.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Jazzer tries to reverse the position but Surmas maintains control.
Jazzer regains half guard.
Jazzer is looking to control Surmas's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Jazzer avoid being mounted?
Surmas wants to free his trapped foot but Jazzer is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Surmas seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jazzer does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Surmas scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Surmas is working for a kimura but Jazzer is defending it quite comfortably.
Jazzer is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nuppu Surmas dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Jazzer gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Surmas counters with a single leg into guard. Jazzer didn't expect that.
Surmas trying to control the position from guard on top but Jazzer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Surmas landing with the ground and pound.
Surmas throwing strikes but missing.
Surmas passes into half guard.
Jazzer pushes Surmas off but Surmas dives into side control.
Jazzer manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Surmas is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Surmas is keen to just control but Jazzer is a slippery customer.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Surmas not doing much here.
Jazzer tries to kick Surmas off but Surmas keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Jazzer is looking to get back to is feet but Surmas passes into side control.
Surmas landing a few strikes.
Jazzer is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jazzer wants to control but Surmas postures up.

Surmas is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Jazzer knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Jazzer manages to get back to half guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Jazzer is trying to maintain the position but Surmas is very close to passing his half guard.
Surmas prevents Jazzer from improving his position.
Surmas looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Surmas winds up and cracks Jazzer with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Jazzer wants to get back to full guard.
Jazzer trying to hold on to Surmas's head to control him but Surmas postures up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Jazzer scores with a shot to the body.

Jazzer feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Surmas is on top in guard.
Surmas working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Jazzer's head.

Surmas decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Jazzer, up you get!
Surmas uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jazzer.

Surmas bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Jazzer is not content to let Surmas control the position.
Jazzer is looking to reverse the position.

Surmas is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Jazzer is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Jazzer pushes Surmas away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Surmas gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Jazzer trying to control but Surmas flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!

Jazzer defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Surmas's arms.

Surmas is striking from the back but Jazzer escapes and manages to recover to half guard.
Jazzer pushes Surmas off looking to stand but Surmas dives back in and keeps control.
Jazzer regains full guard. Nicely done.
Surmas distracts Jazzer with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Nuppu Surmas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Surmas wants to control from the top but Jazzer keeps moving.

Surmas avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Surmas pushing down on Jazzer's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nuppu Surmas dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Surmas shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Jazzer tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Jazzer is trying to keep Surmas in close.
Jazzer wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Surmas is now in half guard.
Jazzer wants to get back to full guard.
Jazzer is looking to get back to is feet but Surmas passes into side control.
Jazzer takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Surmas in side control, throwing shots but Jazzer defends.
Jazzer is trying to control Surmas's posture but Surmas avoids it.

Jazzer takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

I wouldn't like to be where Jazzer is right now.
Surmas cracks Jazzer with a big right hand but Jazzer just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Jazzer manages to work his way to half guard, despite Surmas's best efforts.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Jazzer is trying to maintain the position but Surmas is very close to passing his half guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Jazzer is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Surmas frees his head nicely. Oh but Jazzer has switched to an armbar! Surmas is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
