PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Buassi Alu (ranked 4859 p4p, 23961 weight class) and Justin Vaughn (ranked 82 p4p, 142 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Buassi Alu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Justin Vaughn!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.

Alu shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Vaughn is trying to defend but Alu finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Alu is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We've been hearing good reports from Alu's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Vaughn tries to roll over but Alu keeps him under control.

Alu has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Alu looking to control but Vaughn is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Alu swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Vaughn is now in Alu's guard. A big mistake from Alu there, giving up the dominant position!
Vaughn looking to sit in guard and control but Alu gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Vaughn wants to hit a sweep here but Alu passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Vaughn there!
Alu can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Vaughn is looking to escape.
Vaughn regains half guard.

Alu is working for a kimura but Vaughn is defending it quite comfortably.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Alu seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Vaughn does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Buassi Alu dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Alu decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Buassi Alu overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Alu is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Alu is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Vaughn is just riding it out for now. Alu eventually gives up the hold.

Alu goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Vaughn turns into him and now he's in Alu's guard.

Vaughn content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Alu has locked up a guillotine! Alu's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Vaughn is holding on here and Alu must be using up a lot of energy. Vaughn has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Alu gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Buassi Alu!
After the fight, Buassi Alu was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
