PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shawn Sherrill (ranked 4561 p4p, 4459 weight class) and Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shawn Sherrill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Frank Dennis and Alan Glass.

Sherrill misses with a takedown attempt - Hughes sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Hughes looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Sherrill misses with a body shot.
Hughes feints the counter takedown.
Sherrill is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Hughes.
A nice side step and Hughes releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Hughes fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Sherrill manages to avoid it.

Hughes looks to throw an elbow but misses.

Sherrill is trying to trip Hughes. He has hold of a leg but Hughes is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Sherrill persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hughes might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Sherrill haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Hughes bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sherrill's guard.


Hughes drops back looking for a leg! Sherrill is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sherrill manages to kick Hughes off! Hughes jumps back into Sherrill's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sherrill trying to keep a closed guard but Hughes is proving a slippery customer.
Sherrill working a defensive guard but Hughes manages to pass into side control anyway.
Sherrill is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Hughes working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Hughes is looking to take a break and control but Sherrill is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Sherrill is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Sherrill managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Hughes.

Hughes wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sherrill, who protects the arm well.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hughes manages to capitalize on a mistake by Sherrill to take his back!

Sherrill rolls, trying to escape but Hughes keeps control of the position.

So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sherrill is defended easily by Hughes.
Hughes is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Hughes misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Sherrill looks to land a right hand but Hughes moved out of range.
Hughes shoots in looking for a takedown but Sherrill manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hughes's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Sherrill shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hughes napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Sherrill seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hughes does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Sherrill takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Hughes slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Hughes tries to strike from the bottom.
Sherrill distracts Hughes with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Hughes has momentary wrist control but Sherrill slips an elbow through the middle.
Matt Hughes has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hughes lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Hughes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sherrill swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sherrill is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Sherrill looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hughes with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Sherrill wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hughes keeps working.
Hughes is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sherrill is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Sherrill is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Hughes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That was a close second round but I would say that Shawn Sherrill will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Sherrill feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Sherrill keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Hughes's head.

Sherrill seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Sherrill holds on and takes a little breather.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Hughes tries to clinch up but Sherrill circles away and keeps his distance.
Sherrill changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Hughes is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Sherrill is defending well for now.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Shawn Sherrill.
I think Sherrill has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
