PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between New Breed One (ranked 612 p4p, 402 weight class) and Robert Grandis (ranked 33 p4p, 21 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, New Breed One!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Robert Grandis!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
One shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Grandis as he avoids it easily.

Grandis moves into range and clinches up with One.

One gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Grandis regains guard.
One wants to pass the guard but Grandis is keeping the position.

Grandis keeping moving, preventing One from controlling successfully.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
One cracks Grandis with a solid left hand.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Grandis is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

One makes his way to full guard. A much better position for One.
Grandis must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Grandis avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

One is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Grandis defends well.

One has his foot on Grandis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Grandis works his way back into a safe position though.

Grandis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. One swivels though and keeps the full guard.

One is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Grandis is aware though and is defending well.
One is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

One wants to control from the top but Grandis keeps moving.

One has gone for a leg lock! Grandis slips out almost immediately though and dives into One's guard.

One controls Grandis momentarily but Grandis frees himself.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Grandis wants to get up but he can't break One's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that New Breed One will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

One shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Grandis as he avoids it easily.
Grandis lands a slapping body shot.
Grandis throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Grandis lunges at One with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by One's hand.
Grandis throws a looping overhand right but One ducks down to avoid it.
One ducks under a wild hook from Grandis.
One misses with a jab, cross combination.
Grandis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
One seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Grandis comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Grandis is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst One is controlling him.
One looking to sit in guard and control but Grandis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

One is adopting a defensive guard.
One seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Grandis wants to pass the guard but One is keeping the position.

Grandis got a little sloppy there for a moment and One has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Grandis has managed to get both his arms back between One's legs - danger averted.
One trying to keep a closed guard but Grandis is proving a slippery customer.
New Breed One overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

One is looking for a triangle here but Grandis uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
One tries to bench press Grandis off him but Grandis keeps the position.
One wants to control but Grandis postures up.
Grandis trying to control the action but One is working from the bottom.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
One tries to improve position but can't.
Grandis wants to stand but One has his arm trapped.
One is looking to reverse the position.
One looking for a sweep but Grandis has passed into full mount! Oh no!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
One can't escape the position.
One is working hard here to advance position.
Grandis tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.
Grandis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Grandis with some aggressive grappling here, looking for the finish.

One tries to hold on but Grandis pushes him away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Grandis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! One's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Grandis throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck One on the side of the head.

One is really struggling to control Grandis but he's trying to hold on to the position.

One is working for a kimura but Grandis is defending it quite comfortably.
Grandis is looking for a sweep. One is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
One works his way into side control.

One goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Grandis has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for One but great work by Grandis.
One tries to buck Grandis off but Grandis is having none of it.
One is not content to let Grandis control the position.
Grandis wants to stand but One has his arm trapped.
Grandis tries to stand but One controls the position and pulls Grandis into his guard.

One working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Grandis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Grandis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

One escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Grandis gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

One is looking for a triangle but Grandis pushes his legs off easily.

One is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

I would just about give that final round to Robert Grandis.
I think Grandis has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
