PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Scott Hill (ranked 862 p4p, 827 weight class) and Hannu Karpo (ranked 23 p4p, 21 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Scott Hill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Hannu Karpo!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karpo misses with a kick to the body.
Hill throws a head kick but Karpo moves out of range.

Hill instigates a clinch.
Karpo misses with a punch on the inside.
Nice elbow from Hill.

It looks like Hannu Karpo has been cut.
Hill content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Karpo struggles to land a body shot inside as Hill controls his hands.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Karpo has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Hill tries a body shot but Karpo blocks it.

Hill escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Hill fails with a takedown attempt.
Hill misses with an uppercut
and Karpo counters with a straight right hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Karpo looks to score with a jab to the body but Hill is just out of range.
Hill connects with a good right hand that stumbles Karpo. Karpo circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Karpo avoids the body shot from Hill.
Hill throws a good cross that connects.
Hill bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Karpo's head.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hill throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Karpo takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Hill shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Karpo pinned against the cage. Karpo gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Hill throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.

Karpo has managed to clinch.
Hill tries a body shot but Karpo blocks it.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Karpo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Karpo misses with a jab, cross combination.
Karpo misses with a head kick.
Karpo slips a jab from Hill.
Hill pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
A decent looking cross lands there for Hill.
Hill keeps the fight on the outside.
Karpo throws a wild body kick that Hill sees coming a mile off.
Karpo fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Hill throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Karpo counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Hill changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Karpo looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Karpo tries to bench press Hill off him but Hill keeps the position.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Karpo manages to work his way to half guard, despite Hill's best efforts.
Karpo tries to get to full guard but Hill has control of the leg.
Hill wants to pass the guard but Karpo is defending well.
We've been hearing that Hill has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Hill trying to work for an americana but Karpo has managed to regain full guard.
Karpo trying to keep a closed guard but Hill is proving a slippery customer.
Karpo is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Karpo throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Karpo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hill is just riding it out for now. Karpo eventually gives up the hold.
Hill is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Karpo's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Karpo's back!

Karpo is trying to break free.
Hill is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Hill gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Hill gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Hill apologises and we restart here on the feet.
Hannu Karpo is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Karpo scores with a hook.
Karpo stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Karpo wants it to stay on the feet.
Karpo swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Scott Hill. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Karpo takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Karpo let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Karpo slaps away a takedown attempt from Hill, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Hill shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Karpo defends it nicely.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hill throws a head kick that misses.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

Karpo throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Hill.

It looks like Scott Hill has been cut.
Karpo misses with a body kick.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Scott Hill will probably get the nod.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

A cross from Karpo lands.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Hill crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Karpo - the referee stops the clock and Hill gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Karpo. Hill manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

The fighters circling - Hill throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
It seemed like Karpo was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Hill fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Karpo looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Karpo gets tackled into the cage by Hill. Hill maintains the clinch.
Hill misses with an elbow strike.
Karpo tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Hill's elbow.

Hill is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hill changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Karpo fights it off and pushes away nicely.

It seemed like Karpo was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Karpo fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Hill manages to avoid it.
Karpo throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Horrible takedown attempt by Hill or perhaps it was just good defense by Karpo, which made it look bad.

Karpo moves into the clinch successfully.
Hill tries to stall but Karpo uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Karpo.

Karpo lands with a short shot to the head.
This has been an exciting period of action!
A head punch on the inside from Karpo fails to land.
Hill throws a head punch that misses.
Karpo lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Hill tries to circle away but Karpo has him pinned against the cage.

Karpo presses Hill against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Hill will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Karpo up against the cage.

Hill looks to score with a jab to the body but Karpo is just out of range.

Karpo throws a wild body kick that Hill sees coming a mile off.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hill connects with a nice short shot to Karpo's temple.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hill wants to control but Karpo is keeping him busy.
Scott Hill overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Karpo regains full guard. Nicely done.
Karpo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Hill is pushing down on Karpo's leg trying to pass to half guard. Karpo is fighting to maintain full guard but Hill has managed to sneak the leg through.

Hannu Karpo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Hill shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Karpo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Hill slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Hill tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Hill has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Hill lands a nice short elbow.
Hill content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Hill is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Karpo!
Hill is landing with some decent strikes but Karpo is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hill lands a nice shot to the head.
Karpo tries to hold on but Hill pushes him away.
Hill with shots to the head and body - Karpo looks very uncomfortable down there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Scott Hill showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Hill has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
