PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jay Silva (ranked 2496 p4p, 2560 weight class) and Warren Spade (ranked 330 p4p, 339 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jay Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Warren Spade!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Leandro Rodrigues and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Spade gets tackled into the cage by Silva. Silva maintains the clinch.
Silva is looking for a takedown.
Come on Silva - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Spade has Silva pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Silva manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Silva drags the fight down to the ground.
Spade stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Silva swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Spade wants to control from the top but Silva keeps moving.
Silva wants to get back to his feet but Spade is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Silva working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Spade has passed into half guard!
Spade content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Silva has his hands clasped together around Spade's back. He's all about the action.
Silva is looking to improve his position.

Silva wants to control but Spade is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Silva on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Silva tries to get out of the position.
Spade throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Silva preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Silva wants to improve his position but Spade is controlling well.
Spade thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Silva's head.

Spade escapes and gets back to his feet.
Spade closes the distance and clinches up with Silva, looking for a takedown. Spade pushes Silva against the cage but Silva circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Spade tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Silva swivels and escapes.
Jay Silva has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Warren Spade.
Spade scoring well with a low kick there.

Silva gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Silva wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Spade manages to pass to side control.


Spade decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Spade shoots in for a double leg but Silva sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Spade gets caught napping as Silva dives in and scores a takedown. Spade manages to retain guard.
Spade throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Silva has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Silva with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Silva gets to his feet. Spade looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Silva tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Silva throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Spade's waist but Spade gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Silva off to one side.
Spade wants to counter the offense by Silva and move into the clinch position.
Silva shoots in but Spade avoids the takedown attempt easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Spade takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Silva dodges the punch combination from Spade.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Warren Spade will probably get the nod.
That's time! Silva's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Silva tries to clinch up.
A countering left hand to the body from Spade misses.
Spade blocks a leg kick.
Spade swats away the attempt to clinch by Silva.
Jay Silva is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Spade shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Silva as he jumps to the side.
Spade moves out of range as Silva throws a body kick.

Silva decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Spade tries to get to full guard but Silva has control of the leg.
Silva seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Silva wants to lay and pray for a moment but Spade keeps working.

Spade is looking to improve his position.
Silva knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Spade on the ground.

Silva stands up from half guard.
Silva shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Spade as he avoids it easily.
Spade is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Spade clinches with his opponent.
Spade's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Silva has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Spade goes for a takedown in the clinch but Silva prevents it.

Silva breaks the clinch.
Spade scores with a shot to the body.
Spade will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
The fight stays on the outside here - Spade looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Silva appears to be looking for a big counter.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Silva closes the distance and clinches.
Spade looking for a takedown.
The referee is keeping an eye on Silva - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Silva keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Spade's efforts to push away.

Silva's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Silva fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Spade avoids it really well and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Spade drives through and clinches with Silva against the cage.

Silva is pressed up against the cage. Spade has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Silva down to the mat. Silva avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Spade displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Silva.
Silva tries a head kick but it misses.

Silva clinches up with Spade and pushes him back against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Spade's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Silva tries to pull guard but Spade won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jay Silva. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Spade throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Silva blocks it with crossed arms.
Spade is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Silva is defending well.

Spade decides to pull guard.
Spade keeping full guard, as Silva tries to pass.
Silva stands up over Spade, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Spade looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Silva controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Silva is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Spade is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Spade has escaped and now he's on top!

Silva is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Silva has a closed guard, preventing Spade from standing up.

Silva is looking for a triangle but Spade pushes his legs off easily.
Silva keeping full guard, as Spade tries to pass.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Silva escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Spade gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Silva trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Warren Spade.
I think Spade has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
